When it comes to handling crime and getting justice, some tv cops do it better than others. Whether it be their leadership, values, or willingness to fight for justice, they inspire us and make us think of a career in law enforcement (even though we’re nowhere near qualified).

So whether it’s their fighting moves, their complex background, or their uncanny ability to solve a crime, here are the best cops in tv shows today.

10 Detective Elliot Stabler: Law & Order: SVU (1999-)

For 12 seasons, detective Stabler grazed our screens with his tough no-nonsense approach to catching the culprit. He met an untimely demise in the show but he helped his partner solve hundreds of crimes and put countless abusers and offenders behind bars.

We only wish Detective Stabler was actually keeping the streets of New York from any heinous acts, but alas we can only watch as he takes them down.

9 Detective Jake Peralta: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013-)

Jake Peralta is the goofy but lovable star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Don’t let his immaturity and childish jokes fool you, Jake is a gifted cop with a knack for being a good cop.

We could argue that everyone in the 99th precinct deserves a spot on this list, but none have the natural instincts that he does when it comes to keeping his city clean of bad guys.

8 Captain Joe West: The Flash (2013-)

Starting the show as a detective with a love for his family, Joe West quickly became an expert in metahumans and the crime they bought to Central City after the particle accelerator explosion.

As the adopted father of The Flash, Joe acts as a father figure to team Flash and is often the voice of reason to Barry, Iris, and the rest of the youngsters on The Flash. It is through his words of wisdom and his strong family values that make Joe West a very capable cop, a leader for his precinct, and one of the best cops in tv shows today.

7 Police Commissioner Frank Reagan: Blue Bloods (2010-)

Like Joe, Frank Reagan of Blue Bloods has strong family values that are inspiring to those around him. Frank is the police commissioner and as a leader, he upholds the law and justice no matter how hard it may be and no matter who breaks the law.

With law enforcement running in the Reagan family, Frank sets a good example for his kids and motivates them to be the best cops they can be.

6 Detective Robert Goren: Law & Order (2001-2011)

Detective Robert Goren’s tenure on Law & Order was short-lived but he had a lasting impact that makes us talk about him all these years later.

For Goren, there’s nothing more important than keeping criminals off the street and he will do whatever it takes to get the guy. It may seem like he’s unstable or emotional, but it’s what makes him a great cop and partner.

5 Lieutenant Horatio Caine: CSI: Miami (2002-2012)

Horatio Caine is the stoic and larger than life figure of CSI: Miami. Nothing gets past him, it seems like all he needs to do is look around a crime scene and find some crucial evidence that can solve a case in half the time.

He’s a devout man, attempting to avoid violence and be a good influence to his co-workers and family. He doesn’t say much but when he does, you better listen up.

4 Cordell Walker: Walker, Texas Ranger (1993-2001)

Played by the great Chuck Norris, Cordell Walker was bound to be a bada** ranger with a knack of roundhouse kicking criminals and foiling crime in his small Texas town.

When it comes to raw fighting skills, Cordell tops the list with no competition and like the men on this list, he has strong values and an urge to uphold the law in any way possible.

3 Detective Jim Gordon: Gotham (2014-2019)

Detective Jim Gordon is a crucial character to Batman mythos, helping the Dark Knight take down Gotham’s criminals and help clean the city.

We’ve seen plenty of iterations of commissioner Jim Gordon, sitting on a rooftop with the Bat-signal, waiting for Batman, but in Gotham, we saw a young and hungry Jim, with a drive to clean the city by himself. This is a Gotham long before Batman so it’s up to him to keep the city safe.

2 Detective Olivia Benson: Law & Order: SVU (1999-)

We can’t mention Stabler without his equally awesome partner Olivia Benson. If Stabler was the bad cop, Benson was the good cop, often the more rational and level-headed of the two.

Continuing in the fight long after Stabler’s demise, she made a name for herself and became a very reputable detective in the 20 plus seasons of the show.

1 Detective Wayne Hays: True Detective (2014-)

As the star of the second season of True Detective, Wayne Hays had a hard life on his way to becoming a detective. Unfortunately, we only see the stable and good detective in flashbacks as the current Hays is suffering from memory loss and hallucinations.

But the flashback is all we needed to see to show that Hays is a heck of a cop and definitely worthy of being on this list.
