Heroes are always enjoyable to watch on screen, but those who wear masks are even more fascinating. There’s something dashing and mysterious about a good guy who hides his face behind a mask, whether it’s to protect his identity, or grant him extra abilities. That, and it’s usually the villains who end up wearing masks, and having all the fun.

Some of cinema’s best heroes are those who decided to don a mask, either as part of a full costume, or simply for the sake of mystery. Most of them were able to intimidate their foes in the process, making them appear stronger, and larger-than-life. They may not have needed the masks in order to win the day, but they sure did help.

10 V

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

The titular character of V for Vendetta set off quite a firestorm among both sides of the political aisle when the film was released in 2005. Yet, for all its controversy, the character himself was fascinating. V was a non-superhero comic book character unlike any other; a man who used subterfuge and misdirection as much as his killer weapons.

His Guy Fawkes mask was symbolic in several ways, letting his opponents know that he stood for something, as opposed to merely striking fear in their hearts, or protecting his loved ones. V knew that he had a destiny, and he remained committed to the ideology that had set him upon that particular path.

9 Iron Man

There’s no shortage of masked superheroes in comic books, but Iron Man remains one of the coolest. When the character was brought to life on the big screen as the debut film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it changed the trajectory of superhero films for good. Played with excellence by Robert Downey Jr., Tony Stark suddenly became the gold standard for good guys.

When not making audiences laugh with his eccentric out-of-suit behavior, Stark was busy showing off the powers and abilities of his signature Iron Man suit. The mask design was bold, aggressive, yet heroic, and audiences came to love every scene he was in.

8 Batman

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

The Dark Knight’s mask was designed for one reason, and one reason only – to strike terror into the hearts of Gotham’s villains. Playing off humanity’s cultural fear of bats, he became a symbol of gothic horror in the same vein as Dracula, the Wolf Man, or countless other creatures of myth and folklore.

His mask has undergone many different looks throughout the years, but Tim Burton’s version of the character in 1989’s Batman set the template, even if it took liberties with his comic book origins. The midnight black mask, large pointed ears, and the focus on Batman’s piercing eyes became its formulaic elements.

7 RoboCop

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

After suffering a brutal death at the hands of sadistic criminals, Alex Murphy’s body was transferred to O.C.P. (Omni Consumer Products), and used as a vehicle for a new cybernetic weapons program. The result was RoboCop, a heavily armored policing unit that was half-man, and half-machine.

RoboCop’s mask made him even more intimidating than his large size, perfect aim, and hulking strength. His visor allowed him to target-track multiple foes at once, and assess situations accordingly, but it was obvious that the mask was a design choice, first and foremost. Detroit’s criminals soon learned to tread carefully.

6 Snake Eyes

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

Though the big screen G.I. Joe films have either been guilty pleasures or colossal disappointments, there’s no denying the cool factor of ninja fan-favorite Snake Eyes. This character says little, but his actions say a lot, and he continues to fascinate fans both new and old, thanks to his signature outfit and mask.

When in full costume, Snake Eyes barely looks human. Yet, he’s a hero that will go far above and beyond the call of duty to accomplish the mission and save the day. The mask itself is extremely unique, with a future-tech aesthetic that looks like a cross between a motorcycle helmet, and something out of feudal Japan.

5 Spider-Man

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

Spider-Man’s costume is easily the most recognizable among superheroes, and it’s easy to see why. It’s simple, yet brilliant, with a striking blue and red color scheme, an expressive mask, and web stitching along the body. In contrast to many characters who wear masks, Spider-Man never loses his jovial and playful sense.

The superhero wears the mask primarily to protect those he loves from retaliation at the hands of his foes, but it’s since gone on to become a symbol and an icon for goodness. He’s donned a few variants of the suit over the years, but the overall feel of the mask remains largely the same.

4 Rorschach

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

The Watchmen’s brutal anti-hero Rorschach boasts one of the most inventive and memorable masks of any hero. His overall costume is largely plain, sporting a simple tanned trench coat and fedora, with a scarf around his neck. Therefore, his mask becomes the one true focal point of the character.

Resembling the ink blots of an actual Rorschach test, the mask represents the character’s black and white view of the world, and his own brand of justice. Rorschach views the mask as his real face, as he cannot stand what he looks like without it on.

3 Venom

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

Few characters have masks as cool as Venom does, and there must be a bit of jealousy floating around because of it. Eddie Brock’s alien symbiote is capable of enveloping him, and turning him into a monstrous brute capable of withstanding heavy damage, including gunfire and explosions.

The signature look of the symbiote, however, is the face, with its long, protruding teeth, wicked eyes, and long tongue. For all intents and purposes, this is the mask that Brock wears, even if it’s actually another creature that has bonded with him. In the comics, his true identity is rather well-known, but he’s still a relative mystery in the movies.

2 Westley

10 Coolest Cinematic Heroes Who Wear A Mask

The Princess Bride is one of the best fantasy films of the 1980s, with a cast of wonderful characters. Westley remains one of the coolest, thanks largely to how his character is introduced. He takes on the mantle of the Dread Pirate Roberts, a title passed on from person to person once the previous bearer retires from the profession.

Clad in a black mask and getup, Westley duels the talented Inigo Montoya in one of the film’s funniest and most lighthearted moments, demonstrating superior swordsmanship and acrobatics. It’s hard to find fault with any of the characters in this beloved classic, but Westley’s dashing introduction as the masked scoundrel certainly sets him comfortably in the upper echelon.

1 Guyver

There have only been two live-action Guyver movies in the west to date, and it’s high time someone gave it another shot. The Guyver suit is one of the coolest in pop culture, taken directly from the Japanese anime series of the same name. The suit was worn by Sean Barker, played by actor Jack Armstrong in the first film, and David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid game franchise, in the second.

The Guyver is essentially a suit of bio-armor that gives its wearer incredible strength, speed and agility. The mask is the focal point of the suit, with an intimidating visage comprised of two glimmering eyes, a large horn, and a breathing apparatus that expels gasses from the mouthpiece. It’s one of the coolest, yet most obscure superhero masks in sci-fi.
