One of the best things about this classic film is how much backstory it provides on the series’ protagonist. Learning more about Indiana’s relationship with his father, as well as how he got his signature hat and nearly-ophidiophobic fear of snakes, is a joy to watch every time. With Steven Spielberg directing and George Lucas contributing to the story, this film was destined for acclaim.

9 Home Alone (1990) – Disney +

Home Alone features Macauley Culkin and Joe Pesci as eight-year-old Kevin McCallister and temperamental burglar Harry. After Kevin’s family accidentally leaves him home alone during a Christmas vacation, he sets a series of traps around his house to deter the efforts of devious burglars.

The performance from the ten-year-old Culkin is simply incredible, as his charm and cleverness make him seem like an adorable lovechild of Ferris Bueller and Bugs Bunny. Pesci is perfect as he effortlessly switches between being a menacing threat and an overwhelmed, beleaguered fool. Despite the competition, it’s one of Pesci’s best roles.

8 Die Hard (1998) – IMDb TV

Die Hard features Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman as NYPD Detective John McClane and cunning thief Hans Gruber. McClane finds himself as the “wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time”, as apparent terrorists seize Nakatomi Plaza, the building which hosts the Christmas party he’s attending.

While McClane is one of the most iconic action film heroes, Gruber is no less iconic as a villain. Before Rickman walked the walls of Hogwarts as Severus Snape, he helped Willis form an incredible on-screen duo whose performances seemed to be elevated by the other. While the series has a few good sequels, the first film is an exemplary action flick.

7 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – HBO Max

The Shawshank Redemption features Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as Shawshank State Penitentiary prisoners Andy Dufresne and Ellis Redding. The newly-incarcerated Dufresne struggles to maintain his dignity while asserting his innocence, and his friend “Red” supplies him with the means to escape from prison.

A silver screen adaptation of a Stephen King novella, Shawshank proves that King is equally adept at crafting emotional dramas as he is horror masterpieces. Robbins and Freeman are both phenomenal actors who deliver virtuoso performances, making this easily one of King’s most rewatchable movies.

6 Back To The Future (1985) – Peacock

Back To The Future features Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as teenager Marty McFly and scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown. Traveling back in time via a DMC Delorean, the pair attempt to keep history intact, lest they change the future to which they’re accustomed.

Despite being over 35 years old, this film is no less entertaining to watch these days, and Fox and Lloyd form a hilarious duo that is incredibly easy to root for. Even though it’s generally a fun, silly film, the stakes get serious by the end, as the pair fight to save their futures.

5 Jurassic Park (1993) – HBO Max

Jurassic Park features Sam Neill and Laura Dern as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant and paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler. At a massive theme park where Jurrasic life has been restored, the pair are invited to investigate the park’s safety standards after a velociraptor kills a park employee.

Few films capture the imagination like the big screen adaption of John Crichton’s 1990 sci-fi novel. Jeff Goldblum and Samuel Jackson steal a few scenes each, and the awesome CGI dinosaurs inspire terror and awe throughout the film. It’s nearly inconceivable that one could tire of watching the best action sequences in the Spielberg movie.

4 Ghostbusters (1984) – Rent on Apple TV

Ghostbusters features Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd as parapsychology professors Peter Venkman and Raymond Stantz. After encountering a ghost and being dismissed from their positions at Columbia University, they establish the “Ghostbusters” group to investigate and eliminate supernatural spirits.

Few films blend themes of sci-fi, action, and horror as well as this one, and Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, and Rick Moranis round out this all-star cast. The chemistry among the actors is evidently effortless, and Ghostbusters’ rewatchability helped it become a massive multimedia franchise.

3 Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) – Paramount+

Raiders of the Lost Ark features Harrison Ford and Karen Allen as archeologist Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones, Jr and bar owner Marion Riverwood. Indiana teams up with his former lover Marion to out-race his archeological rival to the fabled Ark of the Covenant before it can be delivered to Nazi forces.

As the first film in the Indiana Jones franchise, this film introduced the world to perhaps the coolest university professor ever. Watching him outrun a giant stone boulder, shoot a maniacal swordsman, and narrowly escape the fury of tribal warriors never gets old, and they’re but a few of the coolest things Jones does in the movie.

2 Toy Story (1995) – Disney+

Toy Story features Tim Allen and Tom Hanks as pull-string cowboy doll Sheriff Woody Pride and astronaut action figure Buzz Lightyear. When the toys’ owners leave them behind on a family outing, they must escape the clutches of a bratty child who destroys toys.

Toy Story is still required viewing for anyone and everyone who hasn’t seen it, as the themes explored therein are and will continue to be relevant for the foreseeable future. The indelible connection between a child and their toys, as well as the hilarious bickering between Woody and Buzz, are just a couple of things that make this movie so entertaining upon repeated viewings.
