Supernatural Already Ended Sam And Deans Story (In Anime Form)

Many Supernatural viewers might be unaware that not only does an anime adaptation of the series exist, but it already finished off the story of Sam and Dean Winchester. Supernatural is currently in its final season and rapidly heading towards an endgame. God has turned from absent father to outright villain, intent on having Sam and Dean fight each other to the death over an apocalyptic backdrop, purely for his own amusement. As the final arc heats up, fans are questioning how the Winchester story will end. How can Sam and Dean defeat God? Will the brothers be forced into fighting each other? Will any of Sam, Dean and Castiel actually survive the finale?

While its these questions that are dominating Supernatural season 15, the mystery has already been answered, in a fashion, by the Supernatural anime series. Strange as it may seem, a Japanese anime version of Supernatural began in 2011 and although some might see the project as a cheap tie-in, the series actually holds far more legitimacy. Animated by the renowned Madhouse studio, Supernatural is a high-quality animated production and the English voice for Sam Winchester is actually provided by Jared Padalecki himself. Jensen Ackles voices Dean for the final two episodes and there’s no shortage of blood and guts, adding a layer of authenticity to Supernatural: The Animation.

Clocking in at a concise 22 episodes, the Supernatural anime roughly covers the main arc of the original show’s first 2 seasons, with the Yellow-Eyes demon serving as primary antagonist against the trio of Sam, Dean and Bobby. While there are certainly some changes (Sam’s girlfriend doesn’t die in the pilot, for example) the adaptation is largely a faithful one and animates famous early episodes such as “Home” and “In My Time Of Dying.” The Supernatural anime also directly covers the season 2 finale, “All Hell Breaks Loose,” and uses it as an end point for Sam and Dean’s story.

As in the live-action series, Sam and Dean face off against Azazel and, with the help of John Winchester’s spirit, manage to take down the demon that ripped their family apart. Dean sells his soul to a demon in order to resurrect Sam, and the anime ends with the brothers riding off to hunt another day, Dean fully aware that his time is now limited, but both brothers content at having avenged their mother. As a series ending, this conclusion certainly has its merits, and was perhaps partially written as such by Eric Kripke in case Supernatural didn’t get a season 3. This ending adds more weight to Azazel as a villain and focuses on the Winchester family’s personal crusade against Yellow-Eyes – the very thing that made them hunters in the first place. By contrast, the original series reframed Azazel as a mere servant and made the Winchesters’ lives as hunters feel like destiny.

The end of the Supernatural anime is bittersweet one. The Winchesters both survive, but Dean’s deal with the devil hangs heavy, reminding viewers how far Dean would go for his younger brother. But while these events already played out in the proper Supernatural, could the tone of the anime’s ending inform the upcoming live-action series finale?

Perhaps the biggest question for Supernatural season 15 is whether the Winchesters live or die. Some might argue that leaving either of the Winchesters alive isn’t a conclusive way to end the series, as fans already know Sam and Dean will always be dragged back to the hunter lifestyle and will try to resurrect the other if necessary. On the other hand, killing off the Winchesters risks a rather depressing conclusion. The bittersweet anime ending mixes elements of both, allowing the brothers to win, but not without paying a hefty price, and this might also be the case when Sam and Dean have their final showdown with God – a victory for the good guys and a happy ending where both brothers live, but only because of a considerable sacrifice made somewhere along the way, adding a tinge of sadness to an otherwise uplifting final chapter.
