Fans have patiently waited for over two decades for New Pokémon Snap, the recent Nintendo Switch title that’s a successor to the popular Nintendo 64 Pokémon spin-off. The Pokémon franchise is no stranger to experimentation and Pokémon Snap marks one of their earlier successes that applies the aesthetics of photography to Pokémon. New Pokémon Snap seems tailor-mode for a platform like Nintendo’s Switch and it’s very satisfying to get a modern update to the premise.
Pokémon has never been afraid to evolve and change and New Pokémon Snap feels like the right step forward. However, the Switch game only features 214 Pokémon, a tiny fraction of what’s actually available in a complete Pokédex. New Pokémon Snap does its best to make strong Pokémon selections, but there are certainly some major omissions that should be discussed.

Pokémon have come a long way since Generation I’s Kanto region, but there are still creatures from this era that remain deeply iconic to the franchise. Dragonite is one such Pokémon, whose very presence warmly conjures nostalgia. D
ragonite is a large Pokémon, but there are multiple courses that feature the ideal environments for the Pokémon. There are some less popular Dragon-Type Pokémon that make the cut, yet Dragonite is now more popular than ever thanks to his presence on Ash’s team in the anime series.
9 Mimikyu’s Creepy Nature Could Lead To Some Excellent Photos
Pokémon’s mascot, Pikachu, is such a popular creature that occasionally a new Pokémon title attempts to recapture this magic with a comparable creature that’s influenced by everyone’s favorite Electric-Type rodent. The majority of these Pikachu clones are almost too cute, but Mimikyu is a bizarre entity that’s a combination of wicked and adorable.
The mysterious Pokémon would work so well in New Pokémon Snap, especially since any photograph would make its unusual face the centerpiece. Mimikyu could even be used to trick audiences and withhold Pikachu.
8 Blaziken Gets Left In The Lurch
There’s a lot of pressure behind the new trio of starter Pokémon that get introduced in each new game and many of these creatures are still the most popular Pokémon of their generation. New Pokémon Snap attempts to please starter fans as much as possible and it throws some appreciated love over to Generation III’s Hoenn starters.
However, Pokémon like Torchic show up, but it’d be even better to get its fully evolved form, Blaziken. If starter Pokémon are involved then it feels like their whole evolutionary line should be present, considering the affection towards them.
7 Lucario’s Extreme Versatility Earns It A Spot
Some Pokémon have gone on to become so popular that they’ve even successfully invaded other series, such as the Tekken crossover fighter, Pokkén Tournament or the Super Smash Bros. series. Lucario is a Pokémon with a very appealing and sleek design, which emphasizes that it’s an excellent fighter that knows how to defend himself.
The Pokémon has been able to make a name for himself off of his intense fighting spirit. Lucario’s presence has become so prominent that it’s actually surprising that he doesn’t show up in New Pokémon Snap, perhaps as a sparring partner for another Fighting-Type.
6 Snorlax Is An All-Time Classic With Ties To The Original
Snorlax is a Pokémon from the very first generation of games, but the creature’s enormous size and exhausted nature make it one of the most memorable of the original Pokémon. Snorlax gets some great use in the original Pokémon Snap and it would have been satisfying to see its successor improve upon this idea and attempt to do something new with the creature.
Snorlax may seem basic, but there’s so much that can be done with the Pokémon’s mannerisms, especially with how sophisticated New Pokémon Snap has become.
5 Garchomp Is The Perfect Pokémon For Dark Encounters
New Pokémon Snap definitely caters more towards cuter Pokémon and adorable gestures that they perform in the wild, but the title also doesn’t shy away from how nature can also be surprisingly callous and brutal.
Garchomp is quite the vicious Pokémon that looks intimidating before he even uses any of his attacks. Garchomp is the ideal Pokémon to populate caves or more suspenseful regions, either as a mild scare to the audience, or just to depict his natural habits while he preys upon smaller Pokémon.
4 Rayquaza Has The Power & Scope To Be An Illumina Pokémon
It’s hard to argue with the fact that Rayquaza is one of the most dangerous and powerful Legendary Pokémon from the series. It holds dominion over the Earth’s atmosphere and operates on a whole other level.
A smart, new idea in New Pokémon Snap is the advent of Illumina boss battles with more powerful Pokémon. None of the Illumina Pokémon battles capture the gravitas of what a Rayquaza encounter would be like. The game doesn’t have to actually leave Earth’s atmosphere, but there are still creative ways to showcase Rayquaza’s glory.
3 Mewtwo Is Hard To Ignore & Offers Tons Of Potential
A lot of rare and powerful Pokémon have come into play after the original games, but there’s still such reverence for Mewtwo, a villainous man-made Pokémon that’s the product of circumstance. Granted, New Pokémon Snap, much like its predecessor, does feature Mew, but this almost makes the lack of Mewtwo even more frustrating.
These two Pokémon could operate in tandem and the player has to decide which of the two that they want to pursue. Mewtwo is just too important to overlook and still plays an important role in the canon of the anime series.
2 Greninja Is A Fan Favorite In Both The Games & Anime Series
Greninja has quickly become one of the more beloved Pokémon due to Ash’s connection with the creature in the anime and how it’s proudly invaded outside fighting series, like Super Smash Bros. It seems like collectively Pokémon has decided that Greninja should be a big deal, so it’s weird to see it excluded in New Pokémon Snap.
There are a wealth of courses that explore aquatic areas so it’s not as if there are no places to fit in the Pokémon. Its unique powers could even make it a worthy Illumina battle in the right context.
1 The God Of Pokémon, Arceus, Should Play A Special Role
New Pokémon Snap excels with its Illumina Pokémon boss battles, but for generations it’s been underscored that Arceus is extremely dangerous. The weight that Arceus carries within Pokémon canon makes it feel like an obvious addition that could highlight some trippy courses as Arceus demonstrates his powers or even sends someone off to the Distortion World.
Arceus could even show up to try and protect some of the Illumina Pokémon and fulfill more of a guardian role, rather than another target. Arceus might be too much to contain in a photograph, but that makes the prospect even more enticing.
