Both Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings are giants of the fantasy genre — in fact, the Rowling narrative is rather similar to Tolkien’s imagination in quite a few ways. Their arcs maintain the same posture: a protagonist defined by his burden, a secretive but overwhelmingly evil villain, and the face-off that happens (directly or indirectly) between these two opposing forces.

These two worlds share enough common ground for a crossover situation to develop, especially in the context of their magical atmospheres. It is not enough to guess what could occur should they overlap, not unless one actually considers the many nodes at which they are fastened to each other.

10 The One Ring Is A Horcrux

Since both Sauron and Voldemort are extremely pompous, it’s clear that their souls will never be placed in any random object (which would honestly be a lot more sensible in terms of hide-ability.) But then one might wonder: would Voldy even be able to wield a weapon as overwhelming as the One Ring?

Perhaps through Legilimency, the art of shutting one’s mind down, he might obtain a decent degree of success. On another note, could the Ring hold the souls of two different characters, or is there a no sharing policy for Horcruxes?

9 Are Dumbledore And Gandalf Twins?

Rowling probably assumed that nobody would notice that Gandalf and Dumbledore are basically the same person, considering that the share almost every feature of theirs with the other — old men, white beards, kind-hearted, quick to anger, a fondness for fire, wise mentors, the list would go on indefinitely.

Both of them are also magnificent wizards, although one wields a wand and the other prefers a staff. Ian McKellen looks nothing like Michael Gambon (or Richard Harris) in real-life, but their roles might as well be twinsies.

8 Ron Weasley In Torech Ungol

Ron would be quite horrified during the Mordor leg of the journey, especially if he knows what awaits him atop the ominous tower of Torech Ungol. It’s a good thing that Samwise is there to save Mister Frodo from being devoured by Shelob, because it’s as likely as not that Ron would run screaming for the hills the second he sees the monstrous spider-demon.

At the same time, he has actually handled the situation quite bravely when in the Forbidden Forest (while going to meet Aragog and his many offspring.) An unclear outcome, but quite fascinating.

7 Wormtail/Wormtongue

Peter Pettigrew’s slimy bootlicking is a disgusting sight, almost as vile as Saruman’s minion, Grima Wormtongue. Although Wormtail refers to Peter’s animagus form, the metaphor works well to describe both these villains, as neither of them display the smallest hint of possessing a spine.

The only difference, of course, is that Wormtail kind of absolves himself by indirectly saving Harry and the others from Malfoy Manor, while Wormtongue up and murders his previous master for “betraying” him (in the books.)

6 The Fellowship Of The Deathly Hallows

There is the possibility that the Golden Trio would succeed if given the Ring-delivery mission (because they actually have some practice carrying around cursed jewelry that tries to manipulate its wearers a.k.a. the locket of Salazar Slytherin.) Similarly, the Fellowship is better placed to identify and locate the final Horcruxes, simply because there are nine of them to do the investigative work required.

Unlike in LoTR, however, Harry and team do not split up and go their own ways (excluding Ron’s short-term treachery) but it’s still anyone’s guess what they would to about Gollum. Maybe establish a Society for the Promotion of Pathetic-Beings-Addicted-To-Sparkly-Things Welfare, if Hermione gets her way.

5 Legolas, House-Elf, Long Under Tree

The “young” Mirkwood Elf, Legolas, is not really the submissive type, so it’s hard to perceive what he might have in common with someone like, say, Dobby (whose only aim in life is to make Harry Potter happy.)

But it must be noted that House-elves are equipped with a rather powerful version of magic, something the Legolas sorely lacks, for the most part because magic is not always directly observable in Middle-earth. Imagine them switching places, though — “They’re taking Harry Potter sir to Isengard!” vs. “Legolas has come to protect, even if he does have to shut his ears in the lembas oven door.”

4 Hogwarts Is Rivendell (But Also Barad Dur)

Rivendell is the safest space in Middle-earth, both because of the Elven magics shielding it from the forces of darkness as well as its near-impregnable fortress. Similarly, Hogwarts is nearly untouchable for most of the series, at least until Dumbledore’s around to scare any lurking Death Eaters away.

But it simultaneously becomes an allusion to Barad Dur, the tower of Sauron, when the old Headmaster is killed and Voldemort pretty much takes control of the whole place. At the end, it’s up to Harry to decide which one he wants it to be.

3 The Nazgul Vs. Expecto Patronum

Dementors and Ringwraiths are like distant cousins: both sets wear the same outfits and have the same generally creepy aura around them. Their powers are also comparable, with the Dementors inducing fear in their victims and performing soul-evisceration kisses, and the Nazgul producing something known as the Black Breath in order to force their foes into a nightmare of paranoia and inescapable terror.

The Witch-king of Angmar is killed by Eowyn, a woman, as per a misunderstood prophecy, but one might wonder what would happen if Harry sends his iconic silvery stag directly at him.

2 Gollum, The Wild Card

There is nobody in Harry Potter who plays the same role that Gollum does. Well, there’s Peeves the Poltergeist, but he’s just an annoying little demon with a penchant for mostly harmless pranks.

No, Gollum’s predictable unpredictability is specifically why he has no place in the Wizarding World, because he would totally throw a wrench into the heroes’ plans. Besides, what would his “precioussss” even be here? The Resurrection Stone? A Horcrux? The Invisibility Cloak? It just doesn’t work.

1 Beyond The Veil

The Veil can be found in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic: it’s actually nothing more than an old grayish-black curtain hanging from a massive arch (that happens the gateway to the world of the dead, and the other way around.) What if, and this is a rather elastic stretch, what if this veil actually connected Harry Potter with Middle-earth?

Does this mean that Sirius Black is currently roaming around the Shire, either bewildered or awestruck? If so, he should create a Marauder’s Map for Frodo to find Mount Doom faster, because that would genuinely save the Fellowship a whole lot of trouble.
