Both 2020 and 2021 gave viewers plenty of new shows to enjoy, airing on streaming services and linear networks alike. While packed full of entertainment, not all of the shows that debuted in the last two years are returning for a second season.

Sitcoms like ABC’s Home Economics and United States of Al on CBS managed to secure second-season renewals that have already begun airing, along with dramas like Fox’s Fantasy Island reboot and Apple TV+’s Foundation. But others shows weren’t so lucky and didn’t make the cut, getting canceled as quickly as they debuted.

Y: The Last Man (FX, Hulu)

After premiering in September, it took a single month for Y: The Last Man to be canceled after airing just seven episodes of the planned 10. The post-apocalyptic drama, based on the comic book series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, told the tale of a mysterious event that killed every mammal with a Y chromosome, with the exception of one single man and his pet monkey. Together, they travel the world to help restore society with the help of his mother, the newly appointed U.S. President.

Even the star-studded cast, including Diane Lane and Amber Tamblyn who portrayed two of the best characters on Y: The Last Man, was not enough to save the series that was apparently 14 years in the making, according to Hollywood Reporter.

Mr. Corman (Apple TV+)

Apple TV+ had high hopes for this comedy-drama given that A-lister Joseph Gordon-Levitt was behind it. He not only starred in the show but also created, wrote, and directed it. However, two months after it premiered in the summer of 2021, it was announced that Mr. Corman would not be returning for a second season.

The show followed a public school teacher and his struggles in life as he dealt with feelings of inadequacy and failed attempts at being a musician. It was a relatable show that anyone struggling with their identity and dealing with life as a Millennial could relate to.

Dash & Lily (Netflix)

Eight episodes of this romantic comedy premiered on Netflix in November 2020, but by October 2021, the streaming service confirmed that the show had been canceled.

Dash & Lily was based on the young adult series Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares. It followed two teenagers living in New York City who fall in love by trading messages and dares in a notebook. The show received positive reviews from critics, including a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which made the cancellation all the more puzzling.

Hit & Run (Netflix)

Just one month after premiering on Netflix, this Israeli American thriller was cut from the streaming service’s lineup. At the heart of the story is Segev, who travels to the U.S. on a revenge mission to find out who murdered his wife.

Through his travels, joined by an ex-lover, Segev discovers that his wife might not have been who he thought she was, and secrets begin to unfurl. The consensus on the show was that it built the story up nicely but petered out very quickly, thus failing to leave viewers wanting more. Hit & Run failed to make the cut as one of the best foreign series to watch on Netflix, and won’t be returning for a second season.

Generation (HBO Max)

Stylistically written as Genera+ion, the hope with this series was that it would be the type of modern, inclusive dramedy that offered a true representation of what high school looks like in the present day. It also covered topical social issues, particularly kids expressing their individuality and sexuality.

But the show was canceled in September 2021 following its first-season debut in March. Generation received generally favorable reviews, with AV Club lauding its ability to capture teen angst and modern-day coming-of-age stories. Though they did admit that it sometimes felt like the show was “doing too much.”

The Republic Of Sarah (The CW)

This drama was good summer viewing for fans of the story, which was about a mining company looking to extract a valuable mineral from under a small town, effectively shutting the whole town down. Sarah, a rebellious high school teacher, wasn’t going to stand by, however, and watch her hometown reduced to nothing. When a series of events lead to the town not only being saved but becoming its own country, Sarah and the other residents must learn to govern themselves.

The Republic of Sarah had an interesting premise but the show was not well received and it was canceled in September 2021 after its first season, which concluded earlier in that month.

Punky Brewster (Peacock)

Punky was back in full force in the rebooted Punky Brewster, as the same spunky and outspoken girl she was back in the original ’80s series. Except now, she’s an adult and mom. Raising kids as a divorcee, including one biological child and two adopted kids, she finds herself in the same situation as her adoptive father Henry when Punky came into his life as a young orphan.

The series tackled a lot of important topics, from gender identity to divorce, acceptance, and love, which is what fans loved about Punky Brewster. Despite love from fans, Peacock decided not to renew it for a second season.

Panic (Amazon Prime Video)

There was promise for this teen drama, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in May 2021. But by August, it was confirmed that Panic would not be returning.

Based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Oliver, it was about 23 graduates participating in a competition where the winner takes home the $50,000 cash prize and a chance to get out of their small Texas town. The catch? They each must decide what they’re willing to risk to make it to the end.

Little Voice (Apple TV+)

Sara Bareilles was behind this romantic comedy-drama, which was also executive produced by J.J. Abrams. It told the tale of a young woman in her 20s trying to find her voice in New York City. Despite receiving fairly decent reviews, some critics found that the story was an overplayed one.

The show actually premiered on Apple TV+ back in the summer of 2020, but by August 2021, Apple TV+ said it would not be bringing Little Voice back for season two.

Rebel (ABC)

Fans were outraged when ABC canceled this legal comedy-drama inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich and starring Katey Sagal. It premiered in April 2021 and was canceled by May, before the first season had even finished airing.

Like many other canceled shows that were later saved, there was initial hope that Rebel might find a new home with another network or streaming service. But according to TVLine, that doesn’t seem to be happening in Rebel’s case and there’s a good chance the show will officially be part of television history.

Call Your Mother (ABC)

One of the earliest new shows to premiere in 2021, Call Your Mother debuted in January 2021 as a midseason entry for the new season. But it only took until May before ABC pulled the plug.

Kyra Sedgwick starred as a retired teacher adjusting to life as an empty nester now that her kids had grown up and moved out. However, she wasn’t quite ready to let go and decided to move from Iowa to Los Angeles in order to be closer to them. Not surprisingly, the kids aren’t too happy to have mom around as they try to forge their own paths away from home. The premise is one any empty nester can relate to, but the comedy just didn’t hit the mark which led to its cancelation.
