He’s one of the most well known and beloved popular culture icons in recent memory. For decades Goku has stood as not only one of Japan’s most famous characters but as a global icon who’s been a part of children’s lives for decades. Oftern seen as one of the strongest fighters in fiction, Goku has defeated and overcome a number of fearsome enemies and pulled countless victories out of many hopeless situations. But is the mighty Saiyan warrior as strong as you think he is? Cross fictional battles aside, you might be surprised to read that there are those within the Dragon Ball universe itself that can give him a run for his money.
There are plenty of tough characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. It’s what makes it so addictive. Watching your favourite character’s overcome these foes gets pretty addictive, and Goku is thought to be the strongest of them all. But there are plenty of other characters in the universe who could dethrone him – you know, if the ramifications didn’t lead to millions of fans calling foul. Goku is kind of protected by his stature and popularity, and while it’s great to see a character we love come on top, maybe it’s time to let some other guys shine.
Here are 20 Dragon Ball Characters Who Could DESTROY Goku in a Fight.
20 Vados
The addition of Angels to the Dragon Ball universe has been something that can be seen as a smart move or yet another example of the series perpetually raising the stakes too high. However you look at them, they are a pretty prominent part of the new series – though they do play something of a behind the scenes role. We start things off with Vados.
She’s easily one of the most powerful characters introduced in Super.
Whis’ (more on him later) own sister, Vados – like any other angel we’ve seen in the series is ridiculously strong and could wipe the floor with almost anyone on the current Dragon ball roster, including Goku.
19 Champa
Much like Angels, the Gods of Destruction are yet another vaguely Deus ex machine-type of character that add something of an insurmountable obstacle to the usually persistent main fighters we’ve seen featured in Dragon Ball. While Beerus is the first God of Destruction we met, we’ll be focusing on Universe 6’s Champa for this entry. Though he pretty much looks like a fat, lazy imitation of his brother Champa is a strong figter in his own right and much like Beerus, is the second strongest in his respective universe. His one weak point would be his low stamina due to his rather husky build, but he makes up for it with raw power alone.
18 Broly
There’s a debate that still goes on as to whether or not we can really consider Broly a part of the extensive Dragon Ball canon – with the general consensus being that we can’t really say that he is. The main reason for his – along with most of the movie exclusive villains’ – exclusion from the canon is that he just doesn’t appear in the manga. Despite his popularity among the fan base, he’s likely to remain in this weird limbo between the actual canon and what you can consider professional fan fiction.
However, one seasoned Dragon Ball writer claims that Broly is the strongest in the universe.
Takao Koyama – who penned a number of the Dragon Ball Z films – believes that Broly is the strongest character in the series. Now that might not be completely accurate, but he is a legendary warrior and we’ve seen just how tough to beat he is.
17 Kid Buu
One of the greatest examples of raw power in the entire series, Kid Buu is easily the weakest villain in terms of writing and character. However, what he lacks in nuance he makes up for in unbelievable strength and entertaining fights. Kid Buu can pretty much destroy entire galaxy’s and is definitely a force to be reckoned with. However, his one main flaw is that he doesn’t really guard all the time. He prefers to attack his opponent’s relentlessly and while that usually works out well, it does leave a good deal of openings a more experienced fighter can take advantage of. Teach this guy to lift his arms every once and a while and he’d slay some of the strongest fighters out there with ease.
16 Kefla
The second Potara fusion on our list, Kefla is one of the many new characters we’ve seen that have challenged and brought Goku and Co. to their limits throughout the Tournament of Power. A mixture of both Kale and Caulifla, Kefla is an insanely strong entity that was sadly underused – as is the case with most of the fusions in the series save for Gotenks.
She’s easily one of the strongest fusions in the series.
Kefla is teeming with raw power and even without transforming is one of the most challenging foes out there. She can achieve an enhanced Super Saiyan 2 form that – had it not been for the Ultra Instinct form – would have likely overpowered Goku.
15 Goku Black
Aside from being one of the most popular characters in the series, Goku’s likeliness is also one that’s been the most used. His father, Bardock looks exactly like him, as does Turles and of course, Goten. The trend was continued in Super with Goku Black, a villain possessing a long dead Goku’s corpse and using it to wreak havoc on Future Trunks’ timeline.
Goku Black turned out to be one of the more enjoyable villains in Super.
Completely unhinged, and possessing many of the same physical traits as Goku, Goku Black offered us a window into what a truly evil Goku would’ve looked like. He was a great villain for the earlier segments of the series and should be popular for years to come.
14 Fused Zamasu
Another Portara Fusion, Fused Zamasu (not to be confused with Zamasu himself) is yet another powerful villain that pushed Goku and tested his limits. A God-like being, Fused Zamasu is the fusion of Future Zamasu and Goku Black – which is essentially the same being combining their power. He resembles some sort of angelic being in his design, which is probably to highlight his status as a God-like being. Though his appearance pretty much resembles Zamasu’s, his power is off the charts and he’s a noticeable step up from both of her counterparts. He’s an interesting but ultimately flawed villain, and is one of the more challenging fights in the series.
13 Whis
Back to the Angel’s, we now turn to Whis as the next entry on our list. As previously mentioned when we covered Whis’ sister, Angles can be seen as the strongest life forms in existence and are a rare addition to the Dragon Ball universe, in that they seem to be something of an insurmountable force. The same goes for Whis and though it hasn’t been shown all that much, we’ve definitely seen glimpses of his ability.
He might not look it but Whis is an incredible fighter.
Though usually lighthearted, Whis has shown his power on occasion – but we highly doubt we’ve seen all that he can do. For Goku, as with pretty much any other non-Angelic character – this would be too big a challenge to overcome.
12 Future Trunks
This one might have some of you scratching your heads, but hear us out. When we were first introduced to Future Trunks he was a young fighter chalk full of potential. He was brought back in Super, once again tasked with defeating a seemingly overwhelming foe. As most of us already know, that was inevitably taken care of.
Future Trunks has become much more powerful than some fans may realize.
Among the original Z fighters, Future Trunks might be one of the most consistent and well developed not named Goku or Vegeta. Though he can’t achieve any of the newer forms, his power is still off the charts and we can picture him matching up well with even the strongest of the old cast.
11 Beerus
Universe Seven’s God of Destruction, Beerus was first introduced in Battle of Gods and has become an important part of the series revival ever since. Living up to his name, Beerius gave fans a taste of the immense increase in power the new series would bring and showed off the uphill battles our heroes would have to overcome in their future endeavors.
The only thing larger than his ego is his appetite.
Beerus can very easily destroy planets with little to no effort, to the point that he can pull such a feat off almost accidentally if he’s too aloof withholding his power. Though not as strong as his teacher Whis, Beerus has proven to be more than a challenge for Goku more than once and at this point remains the most realistic character for Goku to surpass. It won’t be easy.
10 Vegito
This is the least likely you’ll find on this list, simply because there would be no Vegito without Goku himself. The result of the Potara fusion between Goku and Vegeta, Vegito is an insanely strong character – combining the strength of these two insanely powerful rivals. Now, the problem with this entry is pretty clear from the get-go, but in a theoretical fight between Vegito and Goku you’d have to give the advantage to the former, seeing as he basically matches Goku’s own power and adds Vegeta’s immense strength on top of it. The addition of Vegito Blue only cements his status as one of the most powerful yet seldom used characters in the series.
9 Hit
Another one of the new characters, Hit has proven to be one of the most popular new additions in the new series and at one point a deadly foe for Goku and Co. Hit is something of a stoic character and brings back memories of older Dragon Ball villains that let their fists do the talking rather than long-winded speeches. One of the strongest fighters in Universe 6, Hit is among the most powerful non-deities in the Tournament of Power and causes trouble for our heroes almost immediately. We’ve seen Goku take on some pretty tough opponents before, but Hit’s close combat style of fighting made him one of the most daunting physical challenges he’s ever faced.
8 Zen-Oh
Well you know what they say, don’t judge a book by its cover right? Well, that most assuredly applies to our next entry as – on the surface – he looks to be one of the most frail, harmless creatures in the series. In reality, Zen-Oh is actually one of the most powerful characters in the franchise. Hard to believe sure, but that’s how it is. This little guy can eradicate entire universes.
His true capabilities are still unknown, which is what makes him so scary.
While we don’t know much about his capabilities as a fighter, we do know that he possesses tremendous power and is capable of things that our heroes would probably find impossible.
7 Future Zamasu
We’ve kind of milked this guy up to this point, but with so many alternate timelines and such it’s better that we have all of our bases covered. So, what exactly makes Future Zamasu all that different from his fused counterpart and Goku Black? Well aside from a difference in power here and there, not all that much. He’s just as insane and devious as his aforementioned counterparts, though his strength is nothing to be laughed at as well. He’s a fighting prodigy and his skills increase significantly throughout his time in Super. As such, he proves to be more than a problem for not only Goku, but Vegeta and Trunks as well.
6 Great Priest
We’ve already talked about two of his kids, so why not go ahead and talk about the man himself? As previously stated, Angels are ridiculously strong. Their power is pretty unfathomable, and honestly, it’s hard to imagine anything crazier than we’ve seen thus far, but for whatever it’s worth the Great Priest tops them all in terms of pure strength. Whis has the edge as a pure fighter, but he himself admits that his father is much more powerful than he is. It seems that actual combat is starting to get overshadowed by raw power – which could very well change the series’ dynamic going forward. Whatever ends up happening, it’s becoming clearer and clearer tat Goku isn’t and probably won’t ever have a real shot at being the strongest in the universe.
5 Frieza
One of – if not the – most popular villains in Dragon Ball, Frieza’s return was a highly anticipated move that left the door open to do much more with the influential character. As the villain, Frieza was a fierce and ruthless adversary. His defeat led way to larger and stronger enemies, but his resurrection and the reveal of his Golden form opened up a whole bunch of possibilities for the character.
Imagine how strong he would be if he spent his whole life training as hard as Goku or Vegeta.
One huge revelation regarding his Golden form is that it was achieved upon training for a relatively short amount of time, something Frieza was completely not used to doing. A fully trained Frieza could spell trouble for the entire universe.
4 Jiren
Currently, the baddie causing our heroes a good amount of grief, Jiren is one of the most intimidated villains in the franchise and easily backs it up with incredible fighting ability. He’s proven to be a handful for some of the strongest fighters we’ve seen and has effortlessly displayed dominance over more than one character time and time again. At this point, we aren’t even sure if Goku or Vegeta will be able to take him down with strength alone. Heck, even their combined strength probably isn’t enough to defeat this fighting prodigy. His power is on the level with a God of Destruction’s and if you’ve been keeping up with the show, you’ll know that that spells trouble for Goku.
3 Arale
This next one is something of a gag entry, but hey, why not include it? It’s important to take these things lightly every now and then and including a character like Arale is the perfect way to do that. Initially part of Toriyama’s Dr. Slump manga, Arale is also a bit character in the Dragon Ball franchise, though she’s mainly used as a gag character. As such, Arale is ridiculously strong and can take on Goku even in his Super Saiyan Blue form – which might not be saying much given she’s put in there more for comedic effect than anything else. Vegeta himself voices his displeasure with the situation and is pretty adamant about never again wanting to fight another gag character.
2 Vegeta
We’re going to close this list off with two characters who are incredibly close to Goku, starting with Vegeta. These two are no strangers to a good fight and have had several against one another throughout the series. Though initially evenly matched, Goku always seemed to be one step ahead of Vegeta. As the series has progressed, Vegeta has supplanted himself as Earth’s second strongest, inching ever closer to his rival as time has gone on.
His relationship with Goku is one of the best developed in the series.
Much of what can be said about Goku can be said for Vegeta, they’re immensely competitive and have made a habit of overcoming obstacles and surpassing even the strongest foe. If anyone on Earth has a real shot at beating Goku, it’s Vegeta.
1 Gohan
There was a time when Gohan was looked at as his father’s successor – someone who would continue Goku’s legacy. Many fans thought that the series should have ended with the conclusion of the Cell Saga, with Goku once again nobly sacrificing himself – this time for good – and his son, a character who since his introduction had been teased to be stronger than we could ever imagine, inheriting the role of earth’s new guardian. Well, it seems that some fans just can’t let go that easily, and Goku was promptly brought back – cementing him as the series’ savior without opposition.
With Gohan, it’s always been about his potential to be something really special.
You’ll find a lot of fans who aren’t happy with how Gohan’s been handled following the time skip. He’s incredibly powerful when he trains, and as we’ve seen, just a little bit of training immediately puts him in the conversation as one of the most powerful in Universe 7. But it all doesn’t mean anything if he doesn’t keep at it. If he would’ve followed his father’s path a little more closely, there’s no question that Gohan would’ve long surpassed him.
