The Pokemon fandom continues to exceed its reputation for being one of the most creatively minded, especially where the globally popular series’ instantly recognizable mascots are concerned. Hobbyists and professionals alike have conjured all sorts of weird and wonderful interpretations of its fictional fauna over the years, with Pikachu and Charizard undoubtedly being top of that list.

Such is the latter’s star quality that merchandise bearing the fire/flying type’s visage frequently fetches obscene amounts of money. Incredibly rare pristine copies of Base Set Charizard from Wizards of the Coast’s original TCG Base Set, for example, often fetch upwards of six figures, with even newer releases demanding a premium if the evolved form of OG fire starter Charmander is present.

Hardly surprising, then, that Kanto’s resident flame-spewing dragon is typically the go-to subject of choice for Pokemon fan art, though Reddit user Kooale325 has gone one step further and reimagined Pokedex entry #006 with a more realistic take. Using free graphics software Blender, they’ve so far managed to sculpt the entirety of Charizard’s head, pictured below.

This isn’t the first (and likely not the last) time Pokefans will have seen a more lifelike depiction of Ash Ketchum’s infamously unruly powerhouse, of course. Detective Pikachu, the first-ever live-action movie based on the Gotta Catch ‘Em All craze released in 2019, starred, among many other ‘Mons, a computer-animated Charizard adorned with scales much akin to Kooale’s version, though the similarities largely end there, as the designs have markedly different eyes, color and head shape.

Still, this is a welcome addition to the ever-growing gallery of hyper-realistic Pocket Monsters that exhibits a similar art style to one shared by Chris Masna last year featuring Vaporeon about to chow down on a hapless Magikarp. Uncharacteristically violent for Pokemon, you might say, but considering the surprising degree of predatory behavior seen in recently released Nintendo Switch exclusive New Pokemon Snap, it would seem as if The Pokemon Company isn’t averse to exploring the franchise’s fictional food chain.

For those who would rather catch, collect and battle against other trainers instead of mastering the art of perfect framing, Game Freak confirmed earlier this year that Gen IV remakes, Pokemon Shining Pearl and Brilliant Diamond, are due to arrive later this year, and will be followed in early 2022 with a brand-new open-world adventure in the form of Pokemon Legends: Arceus. How this experimental title will compare to the core RPG series has yet to be determined and with any luck, gamers will learn more during E3 next month.
