Nintendo has been around for a long time and it’s one of the most iconic gaming companies in the world. Even if you’re not an avid gamer, you’ve at least heard of Nintendo, or are familiar with some of its popular characters. For many of us, Nintendo’s games made up a good portion of our childhoods, and we still love playing them today.

I know that Nintendo was my first introduction into video games, and it’s still the gaming company I’m the most familiar with. I remember growing up watching my brothers play games like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Donkey Kong. And I joined them in Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. With its wide variety of games, Nintendo usually has something for everyone, and many of the games are also ones the whole family can enjoy. If you want to have a good time, Nintendo is the way to go.

That being said, Nintendo isn’t afraid to get a little weird sometimes. Since it is a big company, it does have the ability to experiment with its games, often creating interesting situation and strange characters. And there have been some really weird Nintendo characters over the years. I have to wonder how some of these characters ever got made and approved.

So here are 20 particularly weird Nintendo characters that have proven to be memorable. Let’s have some fun with these weirdos!

Think we missed some really weird characters? Make sure to let us know in the comments section below!

20 He Just Wants To Be A Fairy

You can’t get much weirder than a 35-year-old man who dresses up in green tights because he wants to be a fairy. And that’s what Tingle is. He first shows up in Majora’s Mask, and he’s made various appearances in games after.

It is a bit weird to see a full grown guy in green tights.

But did you know that Tingle is considered absolutely hilarious over in Japan? They think he’s the funniest old man. But many other fans tend to think this guy is pretty weird and a tad bit creepy. Maybe we’re just wondering why this guy is dressed in green tights all day. (Though the way he acts is also pretty weird. This guy is just bizarre.) At least he seems pretty harmless.

19 Maybe He Just Really Loves Go-Karting

There are a couple of things that are weird about Waluigi. One is that he just kind of came out of nowhere. He just shows up as Wario’s friend in Mario Tennis and decides to join in. Where did he come from? No one knows.

And the other weird thing is his design. There’s tall and lanky, and then there’s Waluigi tall and lanky. This guy is mostly arms and legs and it does make him look a little weird. We get that the Mario games aren’t always super concerned about proportions, but Waluigi looks like he’s been through the taffy puller.

18 Beware The Eggplant Curse

The majority of foes and characters in Kid Icarus are often based off of Greek mythology (if a bit loosely). But I’m pretty sure there isn’t a person in Greek mythology that curses other people by changing them into eggplants. (Or maybe there are, there are some pretty crazy stories out there, and the Greek gods were known for doing strange stuff.)

Everything about the Eggplant Wizard is just weird. From his design to his method of attacks, you’re looking at a strange guy. (And did I mention that he turns people into eggplants? Seriously, what is going on here?) I’m just wondering why eggplant is the theme? Seems like a pretty odd inspiration for an villain.

17 He/She Is Beautiful

Birdo is kind of like Yoshi’s weird cousin. One element of him may not be that weird anymore, which is the fact that Birdo is a guy that clearly wants to be a girl. But when he first debuted in Nintendo, that element of him was definitely seen as strange. So, seeing a pink male dinosaur may not be too strange now, but back then it was definitely weird.

Why does Birdo spit eggs out of his mouth?

But another weird aspect of Birdo is his gaping mouth that he shoots eggs out of. Yeah, that’s his main method of attack, and it’s pretty odd. If I had to go up against Birdo, I’d be pretty freaked out that he was spitting eggs at me. It’s strange, but effective.

16 What Exactly Is This Guy?

Dr Shrunk himself isn’t super strange, though since he’s the character that teaches you emotions, his emotions can be all over the place. So, he is a bit odd since his emotions can fluctuate a bit. And the fact that he’s a comedian can kind of add to this quirky character.

But what makes Dr Shrunk stand out in a weird manner is his species. Most of the animals in Animal Crossing are based off of easily recognizable animals. But Dr Shrunk is actually an axolotl, which is also known as the Mexican salamander. What’s weird is this character is based off of a more obscure animal. Who decided one day that there should be an axolotl character in this game? It’s kind of random.

15 I Think He And Groot Would Be Good Friends

The Adventure of Link isn’t very well known in the Zelda games, though it does have its fair share of interesting characters. One that stands out in his strangeness is aptly named Error.

Error is a man that lives in Ruto town. And while he looks fairly normal, his origins and mannerism are a bit weird. When you first meet him, all he’ll say is “I am Error,” which is a bit weird, and has become pretty infamous among Zelda fans. But he does prove to be helpful as he eventually tells Link how to get to the Island Palace. But still, this guy is pretty weird. Plus, who names their kid Error?

14 Do I Want To Know? Probably Not

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is known for being one of the stranger games in the franchise. It’s full of strange people, weird scenarios, and creepy themes. And with that comes a lot of interesting and weird characters. But one character that stands out for weirdness is the hand in the toilet.

We never find out who this person actually is.

If you go into the bathroom at the inn, a hand will pop up out of the toilet, asking for paper. If you give them a paper, the hand cheers and disappears. Just, what? What just happened? Who does this hand belong to? Why is this person literally in the toilet? And we never get any kind of explanation for it, though this isn’t the first time the hand has appeared.

13 Do You Want To Fight A Snowman?

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

Donkey Kong Country 3 has its fair share of interesting characters. And there are quite a few odd villains. But one villain that takes the cake is Bleak, the boss of the snowy mountain area.

As far as villains go, Bleak is pretty generic, and we don’t really learn much about his personality, but it’s his design that’s pretty freaky and weird. He looks like Frosty the Snowman’s evil cousin. And the look in those eyes is just scary; it’s like they’re staring into my soul. I wouldn’t want to come across this guy on a dark night. Or ever, really. Good luck, Dixie Kong!

12 What Fever Dream Inspired This?

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has a much more serious tone than we’ve seen in most Zelda games. There are new enemies and new characters, but the toned-down color scheme gives the game a darker and more serious feel to it. And then there’s the Ooccoo.

The Sky Temple had a lot of potential, but its inhabitants are just… weird. They are super nice and helpful, but their design is somewhere between a human and a chicken, and it’s just kind of strange and creepy. I don’t know who was in charge of designing these guys, but I really don’t want to know what inspired them.

11 He’s A Maniac

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

Street Fighter is home to quite a few unique characters. Each fighter has a distinct style and look, and they have their own strengths and weaknesses. But there’s no secret that a few of them are a little weird. But one that’s the strangest is Blanka, the fighter from Brazil.

Blanka is a bit on the feral side.

First, there’s his look; he looks like a cross between the Incredible Hulk and some Yu Gi Oh character. And then there’s his origins. He grew up in the jungle and got his green skin from being struck by lightning (yeah, I don’t know.) So, the guy does tend to be a bit feral, especially in his fighting style. But he’s actually a pretty nice guy. Just don’t make him mad.

10 No Spirit Should Be This Curvy

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

Since a lot of Nintendo’s games tend to be the type the whole family enjoy, they usually try to be family friendly, with some exceptions. But that doesn’t mean that some of these games can get a little… weird. And they can have some questionable characters.

One character that I’m really surprised they got away with was Madame Flurrie from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. She’s a wind spirit with quite the curves. What’s a bit strange about her is just her very design is incredibly… suggestive. Seriously, she doesn’t leave much to the imagination, and she’s quite the flirt. You need to calm down a bit, Madame Flurrie.

9 We’re Dealing With Aliens Now?

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

The Donkey Kong series isn’t that afraid to get a little weird in their games, so the fact that they would have a few weird characters isn’t that surprising. But one character that really stands out is Xananab from DK Jungle Climber.

Not only is this guy a sentient banana, but he’s also an alien sentient banana. I mean, I really don’t know where to go with that. I think this is the first we’ve dealt with aliens in the Donkey Kong series, and of course the aliens would be bananas. At least Xananab is a pretty nice guy, and he does help out the DK crew.

8 He’s Spent Too Much Time With Ghosts

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

Luigi’s Mansion was more or less Nintendo’s attempt to make a scary Mario game, and while it’s not scary per se, it does have a lot of fun horror atmosphere. And there are quite a few interesting characters in this game, including the wide variety of ghosts. But the character that stands out in his weirdness is the guy who helps Luigi, Professor Elvin Gadd.

Professor Gadd may be nice, but he’s also pretty weird.

While he’s rather nice and does help Luigi out, Professor Gadd is a bit off. There’s the fact that he’s dedicated his life to studying and vacuuming up ghosts. And his glasses make him look a pretty freaky. Plus, his speech is also pretty odd. But hey, I guess you’d have to be a bit weird to study ghosts.

7 They’re Adorable And Strange

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

The Earthbound series is pretty famous for being strange and wacky, full of crazy situations and even crazier characters. In fact, there are so many weird characters that I had a hard time choosing my favorites. But one group that stands out are the Mr. Saturn people.

This species is actually very kind and gentle, but their design is just plain strange. They look kind of like if Hello Kitty stopped growing halfway and had a huge nose. And their speech is also pretty strange, filled with “Boing” and “Zoom.” But hey, they’re very nice, so we can’t fault them too much for looking a little weird.

6 This Guy’s Been In His Tower Too Long

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

They have done a few Mario RPGs, but Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the one that started it all. It also had its fair share of quirky characters. And one particularly strange character is Booster the Seventh.

This guy is the prime example of why you shouldn’t become a hermit. The guy is mostly content to just stay in his tower and play with his Snifts. But when Toadstool crashes into his tower, he decides that he wants to marry her, much to her dismay. We can tell that Booster the Seventh really isn’t all that right in the head. You need to get out more, man.

5 Where Did She Even Come From?

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

We shouldn’t be surprised by anything the Donkey Kong series throws at us, but there are still some characters that are a bit strange when you think about it. And one of those is the Banana Fairy Queen.

Do we even know the Banana Queen Fairy’s origins?

Now, the queen herself isn’t particularly strange. She’s just sad because her banana fairies flew away in fear of King K Rool. But the fact that there are banana fairies in the first place is pretty weird. What are the Banana Fairy Queen’s origins? Where did she come from? Why is she banana themed? We never get any kind of answer, and it’s a little weird if you think about it.

4 What Is Up With This Pig?

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

What would be the first thing you did after conquering a planet? Well, in Diddy Kong Racing, the main villain, Wizpig decided to turn his conquered planets and worlds into theme parks. And that pretty much explains everything about this crazy pig.

What’s weird about this guy is that even though he’s incredibly powerful, he just likes to do stuff like racing. And his motivation for doing most of his evil deeds are just that he’s bored. This guy is a pretty chaotic villain, and his motivations are just weird. Plus, his design as this demonic pig is both strange and kind of funny.

3 That’s A Pretty Weird Hobby, Dude

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

I feel like Kilton is Tingle’s weird goth cousin or something. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if the two were related or possibly even knew each other. (Or maybe he’s Tingle’s descendant.) Kilton’s definitely strange enough to be related to Tingle.

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, You can find Kilton in certain areas at night and trade monster parts with him. Yep, this guy is obsessed with anything monster related, collects monster parts, and makes things out of monster parts. I guess everyone’s got to have a hobby, but that’s a little weird, Kilton. And his design is also a bit strange. At least he seems relatively harmless.

2 Who Came Up With This?

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

As far as designs go, Buzz Buzz may not be one of the oddest-looking characters in the Earthbound series, but his origins are definitely out there, literally. The first time we meet Buzz Buzz, he was in a meteorite that crashed in Onett.

Buzz Buzz’s origins are pretty crazy.

Buzz Buzz is actually from a future where the evil Gigyas took over, and he set to go back in time and warn Ness. It’s thanks to his actions that Ness sets out on his adventure, so we have to thank this futuristic insect for getting the ball rolling. But the way he got here and the fact that he’s a rhinoceros beetle-type insect from the future is pretty strange.

1 Is This Supposed To Be Spooky?

20 Weird Nintendo Characters We Can’t Believe They Actually Made

Since Pokémon has been going on for many years and has several generations of Pokémon, it’s no surprise that there are some pretty weird ones out there. From creepy to goofy, there’s no shortage of unusual Pokémon that would probably make you do a double take. But one that caught my eye in particular is Drifloon.

Drifloon is one of those Pokémon that may have started out trying to be sinister but just comes across as goofy. The Pokémon tries to steal away children but usually fails because it’s so lightweight, and it just gets pulled along by the children like a balloon. It’s just so random and the design of this Pokémon is incredibly goofy.
