What creates the monster that drives people to kill? According to Harry Ambrose, everyone has dark thoughts caused by childhood trauma, and the only thing that stops them from committing crimes is controlling and learning to live with these thoughts. The Sinner is all about how victims of traumatic events can be saved after these dark thoughts make them commit murder.

In most crime dramas, the killers make the least likable characters to anyone watching but not in this case. All the killers in The Sinner are only villains before Harry Ambrose gets to the root of their state of mind when they committed the murder. Even the suspects become the most likable characters in the show at the end of the day, while the victims like Nick Haas end up being the least likable.

11 Nick Haas

The Sinner The Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Nick Haas didn’t commit any murder in the show, but somehow, he went down as the scariest villain. Nothing good came from his memories. Whenever Jaime felt Nick’s presence around him, he always felt pressured to do the wrong thing, from attempting to suffocate the old man in the care home to nearly crashing the woman in the car.

When Jamie had hallucinations of him while carrying the baby, he nearly squeezed the life out of it, which shows just how bad Nick was. He had a strong influence over Jamie, which drove him to the darkness causing him to become a serial killer. He was also about to commit his first murder before he died and would have been worse than Jamie if he hadn’t perished.

10 Phoebe Lacey

Phoebe Lacey was so much like Nick Haas, although she couldn’t physically perform the dark fantasies she had in her head, and some good came from her memory in the end. She was manipulative, though, and always knew the button to press to get Cora to do her bidding. Her parents had already convinced Cora that her sins had caused Phoebe’s sickness, so she was bound by guilt to do whatever Phoebe asked, even when it hurt.

Cora was forced to do dangerous things, including stealing and finally ending up in J.D’s bed because of Phoebe. Phoebe never felt sorry when Cora was punished for her mistakes. When she forced Cora to take her to the Beverwyck Club, she knew it was dangerous and that she might die, but she did it anyway. It ended up haunting Cora for the rest of her life.

9 Jamie Burns

The Sinner The Main Characters Ranked By Likability

The Sinner’s first two seasons brought killers who were willing to change and cooperate with Harry Ambrose, but the third season brought the one who wanted to kill him. Jamie was affected by Nick’s influence over him in college, but the crimes he committed had nothing to do with Nick.

He had gotten over Nick all those years and started a life until he himself called Nick back into his life. He then convinced himself that Nick would have wanted him to kill people, which is how he became a monster. He killed innocent people, including Harry’s precinct chief, to get Harry to be like him. He went down as the worst ‘Sinner’ in the show’s first three seasons.

8 Julian Walker

The Sinner The Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Julian Walker was a brave kid born into a very tumultuous family with violent people around him and extreme teachings that led him to commit murder. He was taught that the Mosswood commune was the only home he could have in the world and that liars were the worst people who deserved to die.

He ended up committing murder, believing he was doing the right thing, so you can’t blame him for his crimes. He was a sweet kid that fought to do what was right and even accepted to stay behind and pay for his crimes. He was a gentleman despite all the evil the world had thrown at him.

7 Leela Burns

Leela knew that she would be a mother soon and was willing to work with Jamie, but her husband was a lost cause. When Nick came into their home and Leela realized something was wrong, and Jamie may have been Nick’s lover, she stayed with him and tried to be understanding even when he lied to her face.

After Nick’s death, Leela tried to help Jamie get over it, but Jamie only drifted away from her and even attempted to kill their baby. When she realized that her husband was a liar and a monster, she threw him out of the house and even helped Harry bring him to justice. She always did the right thing.

6 Heather Novack

If Vera weren’t the best option, Heather would have made a great mum for Julian. She never stopped fighting for him. Heather was the best partner Harry Ambrose ever worked with in The Sinner since she is the only one that came up with as many correct assumptions as Harry. Jack Novack was a terrible father, but Heather was a great detective.

She never gave up on her friend even after she joined Mosswood and made a fool of Heather when she tried to convince her to leave. Heather also dug deep enough to discover that Julian was Marin’s son. When Marin called her, Heather tried to help her get Julian back legally and probably get a life, but she wouldn’t listen.

5 Sonya Barzel

After Harry’s messed up marriage to Faye in the first season, it seemed as if the old detective would never find love again until he met Sonya. A brave woman living alone in a large forested estate and not willing to leave even when death was coming to her.

She was passionate about painting and wouldn’t let anything intimidate her. Sonya understood Harry’s suffering and managed to get into Jamie’s mind. She was strong, brave, and brilliant, a perfect match for Harry.

4 Mason Tannetti

Mason loved Cora and fought for her from the moment she stabbed Franke Belmont on the beach. Cora had hidden most of her past from him, and he had every right to assume she was a monster, but he didn’t. He stood with Cora and even started investigating J.D and his gang on his own.

When Cora was sent to prison, he brought her son to see her and promised to visit for as long as she stayed in prison. He was the most supportive partner and one reason why Cora kept fighting to find the truth.

3 Harry Ambrose

The Sinner The Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Harry Ambrose is a strong man that fights for people the rest of the world would see condemned. He has his own demons from his dark past, but he tries to fight them and stay alert enough to help other trauma victims like him. He is the main protagonist of the series, so you have to like him, but he is not the most likable character so far.

He has his own faults as he caves into the darkness sometimes. He cheated on his wife and put his family in danger. In the end, he always fights for what is right and ensures that justice is served. He was especially likable at the end of the third season when he finally got the strength to kill Jamie, who wouldn’t find justice any other way.

2 Cora Tannetti

The Sinner The Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Cora Tannetti was a great mother and wife until she stabbed a man at the beach because Frankie’s girlfriend played her trigger song. Her situation was so sad because she didn’t have a violent bone in her body and wouldn’t hurt anyone. It was only a coincidence that the song was played while she was holding a knife at the time. She had been through worse trauma than the rest of the people in the show, but she was also the one with the best control of her darkest thoughts.

Her parents had tortured her; her sister used her while J.D abused her before the Belmonts finally imprisoned her and got her hooked on drugs. After all that trauma, she gathered the pieces and created a perfect life with a beautiful family. She was the ultimate survivor.

1 Vera Walker

Vera Walker wasn’t Julian Walker’s birth mother, but she fought for the boy more than his birth parents ever did. She protected him from Jeffreys, the deranged leader of the Mosswood Commune, and his own mother when she tried to take him away. Vera was even willing to become a criminal by running away with the boy so he could go free.

She had fought her own demons at Mosswood before she became responsible for the lives of all those troubled people. Despite her own struggles, Vera kept everything together. She was even able to spare a moment to save Harry Ambrose. She just sacrificed so much, even when she had nothing to gain from it.
