2019 Was Pokémon GOs Best Year Bringing $894 Million In Player Spending

2019 was Pokémon GO’s most successful year yet, as the popular mobile game collected an incredible $894 million from its many players. The total broke Niantic’s previous record of $832 million set during 2016, the game’s first year of release.

Despite Pokémon GO’s clear success, this news still comes at a bit of a surprise. In 2016, Pokémon GO became an international phenomenon, with millions of people flooding the streets and talking about their Pokémon collections constantly in the first few months following release. The fact that the game made even more money this past year is quite the accomplishment.

After its massive debut, Pokémon GO did lose a bit of steam in 2017, only bringing in $589 million. This was most likely due to the game’s novelty wearing off, and the fact that many casual fans mostly cared about the first generation of Pokémon, not so much the later creatures.

By consistently bringing new features into the game though, Niantic has drawn up increased interest with each year. While introducing new Pokémon, as well as Pokémon buddies, friends lists, a trade function, and a battle system, players have had more reasons to come back to the game, meaning they’re more likely to spend money as well.

Now, along with everything else the game has included, Pokémon GO has launched its online battle system, GO League. This has given players a new reason to collect and train better Pokémon, again leading to more interest and more revenue for Niantic.

We also learned that Android users make up a majority of the Pokémon GO player base, generating 69% of installs in 2019, as well as 54% of total player spending. While iOS players make up a smaller portion of the player base, they actually spend more money per player. Not only that, but the game is clearly a hit across the globe, considering that only 38% of its profits came from the United States.

It’s clear that Pokémon GO is still one of the most successful mobile games out there, and with Niantic adding new features and new Pokémon all of the time, it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere any time soon. We may never actually have a chance to catch ’em all, but we’re certainly going to keep trying.
