Appearing as the second in a rolling roulette of super-powered villains in Dragon Ball Z, Nappa accompanied Prince Vegeta to Earth in order to collect the seven Dragon Balls for the sake of wishing for immortality. After the demise of Goku’s long-lost brother, Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta filled the role as the Z Fighters’ primary antagonists. As soon as he came, Nappa quickly left our minds and thoughts. Thus, it seems only fitting to elaborate upon Vegeta’s second-in-command. Reading this article, you will notice that Nappa was involved with a lot of firsts and seconds in the acclaimed series.

Thanks to spin-off fiction such as manga and Dragon Ball-related video games, Nappa has seen a lot more character development. Many different tidbits and unseen transformations were included in these titles that really drew the interests of Dragon Ball fans around the world. Like Raditz, let’s speak about this bald-headed hulking mountain of a Saiyan. How much do you know about Nappa? Here are 25 factoids, some crazy and some silly, that you didn’t know about the Saiyan general Nappa from the Dragon Ball Z series.

25 Every Major Saga In DBZ

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

While Nappa was eliminated quite early in Dragon Ball Z, he actually did reappear at least once during every major saga in the popular series. Notably, Nappa debuted in the 204th chapter of the Dragon Ball manga, which went seamlessly from the original series to Dragon Ball Z without numerical interruption. His animated debut was in the DBZ episode called Gohan’s Rage, the fifth episode of the series. That episode was famous for being the destruction of Goku and Raditz due to Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon. Later in the episode, Nappa and Vegeta are shown in space talking about Raditz’s defeat and wishing for eternal life if they should gather the seven Dragon Balls. Thus, both of them enter their Space Pods bound for Earth.

24 Had A Full Life

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

Exactly how old is Vegeta’s trusted general? Like with most characters in the Dragon Ball universe, the exact age was not explicitly stated in any of the source material or official guidebooks, but there were hints given.

Nappa is a Saiyan adult who is probably in his 50s

There is enough information to surmise that Nappa is a Saiyan adult who is probably in his 50s in terms of Earth-calculated years. According to the Daizenshuu 7, Nappa is stated as being around his 50s when he was killed the first time. The earliest canonical appearance of Nappa is during the Saiyan-Tuffle War, as well as being the direct subordinate during Vegeta’s mission when he was young. Of course, there are several physical inconsistencies with Nappa’s numerous appearances.

23 When I Had Hair

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

While there is often fan speculation concerning Nappa’s appearance as a Super Saiyan with no hair on top of his head, he wasn’t always a bald guy.

In his earlier chronological appearances, there was a time when Nappa did have hair

In his earlier chronological appearances, there was a time when Nappa did have hair. However, it should be noted that despite being probably in his 30s, he was already exhibiting signs of Saiyan pattern baldness. This might also be one of the rare instances where a Saiyan actually goes through a hair change, which is thought to be inconceivable with Vegeta’s early erroneous statement. Luckily, Nappa’s hypothetical Super Saiyan look does feature him with his bald head. Where exactly does his bright Super Saiyan hair glow? Be sure to keep reading.

22 Fusion For Fun

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

Like his compatriot, Raditz, Nappa was also featured in the game called Dragon Ball: Fusions, a title filled with hypothetical, non-canonical fusion characters. Unsurprisingly, both of Nappa’s fusion forms require Raditz as his partner. If Nappa performs a traditional Fusion Dance with Raditz, they create the character named Natz, who looks oddly-similar to Uub with a mustache. The EX-Fusion counterpart named Rappa utilizes Raditz’s body and hair as the base with Nappa’s face. Natz was also featured in the manga based on the spin-off video game and is considerably more powerful than both of the villains at any point in their canonical appearances. There is also a third unnamed prototypical Saiyan character that is also featured in the game.

21 It’s Under 9000!

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

As the second notable villain of Dragon Ball Z, Nappa is probably the third most powerful enemy that the Z Fighters faced in the series, outranking Raditz and the Saibaman. As a noble-class Saiyan warrior, Nappa was probably the second-weakest Saiyan character featured in Dragon Ball Z.

Nappa at full-power measures in at a power level of 4,000

According to Akira Toriyama, Nappa at full-power measures in at a power level of 4,000, which is over double the power of Raditz. It is unknown what Nappa’s power level would advance to if he survived his battle with Goku and wasn’t eliminated by Vegeta, as the Saiyan ability of Zenkai would have given him a tremendous power boost. Even when he returned from the afterlife, he was extremely-outclassed by a now-heroic Vegeta.

20 Captain Of The Neo Ginyu Force

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

While he never conversed with the Ginyu Force, canonically, the Dragon Ball Z video games often reference Nappa’s relationship with Frieza’s most-elite troops. In the Dragon Ball Xenoverse game, Nappa was appointed as the leader of the revived Neo Ginyu Force in place of Captain Ginyu in the GT/Super 17 Saga. Where exactly is Ginyu during this time? Probably already deceased, but he was nowhere to be found. After being able to escape the afterlife when Super 17 opens the portal to the Earth realm, Nappa leads the team in order to exact revenge on Vegeta, the Saiyan who killed him in the first place. Of course, his plan ends up being unsuccessful as the Neo Ginyu Force is defeated by the heroes and sent back to the afterlife.

19 Man Of Many Voices

In Japan, the character of Nappa is voiced by a committee of actors. The original Japanese voice acting is provided by Shozo Iizuka, who is known for his roles as Doctor Neo Cortex in the Crash Bandicoot series and the Japanese dub voice of B.A. Baracus in The A-Team. He also voiced Android 8 in the original Dragon Ball animated series. In his resurrected appearance in Dragon Ball GT, Nappa was voiced by Kiyoyuki Yanada, who starred in other prominent series like Magic Knight Rayearth, Digimon, and Slam Dunk. In the re-released Dragon Ball Kai, Nappa was given the vocal talents of Tetsu Inada, who voiced other Dragon Ball universe characters like Lord Slug, South Supreme Kai, and Shisami. For his English dubs, Michael Dobson provided the voice for the Ocean version, and Christopher Sabat for the original Funimation dub. Phil Parsons did the re-released versions, as well as his video game appearances.

18 Kaioken First

While single-handedly battling and defeating the combined attack of Piccolo, Gohan, and Krillin, the large Saiyan general was able to eventually kill Piccolo when the Namekian shields Gohan from Nappa’s Bomber DX.

Goku easily outclassed the bald Saiyan warrior and eventually broke his back

As the first show of strength by the resurrected Goku, Nappa has the distinction of being the first-known character to be successfully injured by his Kaio-ken power-up. With the Kaio-ken power-up, Goku easily outclassed the bald Saiyan warrior and eventually broke his back after dodging Nappa’s ultimate attack, the Break Cannon. Of course, Nappa was later eliminated by his former ally Vegeta after failing to defeat Goku with the Galaxy Breaker. After his passing, King Yenma sends him to the afterlife along with the also-defeated Raditz.

17 Technical Knockouts?

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

While he was quite the handful to the Z Fighters by decimating the team before Goku’s resurrection, Nappa actually only eliminated one of the heroic warriors. ONE. Before finally meeting his demise, Nappa ends up destroying a city with several thousand humans and a whole bunch of soldiers. The lone extermination by Nappa against the Z Fighters came in the form of Piccolo, who sacrificed himself by blocking the Bomber DX directed at a nearly-defeated Gohan. The other two eliminations were actually the form of self-destruction attacks by Chiaotzu and Tien. Chiaotzu clung to Nappa’s body and self-destructed to no avail. His friend Tien utilized all of his life-force in a Tri-Beam attack that was also unable to defeat Nappa.

16 Cabbage Patch

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

Like other Saiyans in the franchise, Nappa is also named after a real-world vegetable, and notable for being one of the most famous and commonly-used vegetables in East Asian cuisine. Not bad for one of the minor villains in the Dragon Ball Z series.

Nappa is known to the world as one type of Chinese cabbage

Nappa is known to the world as one type of Chinese cabbage, but it is also used in other neighboring Asian countries like Japan, Taiwan, and Korea, eaten raw and cooked. Perhaps one of the most famous uses for the Nappa cabbage is as the main ingredient in the most common type of kimchi, as well as being extremely popular in Gangwon-do, a province in South Korea. The more you know, am I right? And you thought the content on theGamer is anything, but educational.

15 The Missing Scouter

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

What happened to his scouter? While Raditz actually had his scouter re-purposed by Bulma and Vegeta ends up crushing his, Nappa’s scouter was never accounted for. Thus, it holds the distinction of being the only scouter not destroyed onscreen, except for filler and stories outside of the main story-line. Of course, Bulma’s re-purposed scouter ends up getting destroyed, as well. Indeed, Nappa’s trusty scouter was actually taken off during a battle at the advisement of his superior Vegeta and never really seen again. Didn’t really change the results of the fight, as the scouters are quite worthless, anyway. While this might just be one of those really obscure pieces of trivia without any groundbreaking value, it is an interesting tidbit, nonetheless.

14 Looking Familiar

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

While he was a notable character in Dragon Ball Z, Nappa did look oddly-similar to another DBZ villain named Rock. Of course, characters looking alike is pretty common in Akira Toriyama-designed fiction. Just look at his main characters in the Dragon Quest series? Look familiar?

If you do not remember Rock, you are probably not alone. He was briefly featured in a filler episode in the Great Saiyaman Saga, which is pretty much a filler saga itself. Rock is the leader of the Red Shark Gang and kidnapped the Satan City mayor to draw the attention of Hercule. He is also featured in Toriyama’s side story called Dub & Peter 1, where he plays the role of a criminal and kidnapper, once again.

13 Super Saiyan Goatee

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

Though he might not have any hair on the top of his head, that doesn’t mean that Nappa cannot go all Super Saiyan. Featured in the non-canonical spin-off, Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Nappa attains the Super Saiyan 3 transformation.

His facial hair gets a much needed massive spiky boost

Because he doesn’t have the customary hair on the top of his noggin, Nappa’s Super Saiyan blonde/gold glow is shown with what hair he does have. Thus, his eyebrows disappear (as with the Super Saiyan 3 form) and his facial hair gets a much needed massive spiky boost. Indeed, this might be one of the more comical appearances of any Super Saiyan form. At least, they didn’t use that fan-art version of Nappa’s Super Saiyan 3 form that has one gigantic golden beard like Super Saiyan Santa Claus.

12 Skipping For Greatness

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

Similar to Raditz, Nappa is the only other Saiyan character from the main storyline of the DBZ series to not have any onscreen canonical transformations either of the Super Saiyan or Great Ape type. Thanks to the Dragon Ball Heroes spin-off series, these two early Saiyan villains are finally given their rightful Super Saiyan forms for fans to cut their teeth on. In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Nappa and Raditz are given the fabled Super Saiyan 3 form. Despite not being canonical, these hypothetical character transformations are pretty popular among fans. They are also noted for being several Saiyans to be able to skip several lower Super Saiyan levels on their way to Super Saiyan 3. Maybe Vegeta should have asked his underlings just how to get to get to their level. Burn.

11 Color Correction Conundrum

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

When the initial run of the Dragon Ball Z anime was aired, Toei accidentally gave Vegeta and Nappa the wrong coloring. At least, it was wrong in the mind of Akira Toriyama, as the original manga was pretty much black-and-white.

Vegeta was given different colored hair that was sort of reddish. His Saiyan armor was also given an incorrect green tint. Due to the urging of Toriyama, further appearances of Vegeta were given the corrected coloring for the sake of consistency. However, Nappa’s coloring was pretty much given multiple coloring schemes, as his pre-Earth appearances featured him in the incorrect color scheme in the re-release version Dragon Ball Z Kai. Oh, how this boggles the mind. Perhaps, he owns several suits in different colors. We might never know.

10 Lone Elimination

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

While easily defeating the combined might of the early Z Fighters, Nappa’s one true elimination off of them came in the form of a sacrifice by Piccolo. The two other Z Fighters came in the form of failed kamikaze attacks by Chiaotzu and Tien. Chiaotzu clings to Nappa’s back to use a self-destruct attack that failed to defeat the big Saiyan general. In retaliation, Tien puts all of his power and life force in one final Tri-Beam attack that also failed. Thus, these exterminations are pretty much considered as coincidental destructions. The power level of Nappa did force the Z Fighters into these last-ditch efforts in order to defeat him. Interestingly enough, Goku easily dispatched Nappa, after having tremendous trouble battling his brother Raditz. Oh, how the story of Dragon Ball logic goes.

9 One Million Years

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

Featured in only the French dubbing of the Dragon Ball Z animated series, Nappa actually states that the Saiyan race has existed for over one million years. While there aren’t any other source material to prove or disprove this claim, this little bit of trivia could just be something created by the French translators, as it never shows up in dubs in other languages and in the original Japanese voice track.

The earliest origin of the Saiyan race is at Planet Sadala

The earliest origin of the Saiyan race is at Planet Sadala, which was destroyed. The most current place of residence for the entire Saiyan race is Planet Vegeta, which is the conquered Planet Plant. This is also the setting of Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock. In this short story, Bardock was actually sent back in time after being thought to have perished along with the destruction of Planet Vegeta. This is where Bardock ascends to Super Saiyan status and defeats Frieza’s ancestor. This could be why Frieza fears the fabled Super Saiyan.

8 The Tallest?

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

While Vegeta might be one of the shortest characters in the series as well as the others in the Saiyan race, his partner Nappa might actually be one of the tallest. Indeed, Nappa is the tallest Saiyan featured in the main Dragon Ball Z series. If one was to consider the expanded universe, then the Legendary Super Saiyan form of Broly would probably take the title as the tallest Saiyan in existence.

Nappa as the tallest out of all of them

This also takes into consideration Bardock’s teammate Borgos, who is also very tall but doesn’t have any designation as the tallest Saiyan to have ever been featured in official Dragon Ball Z fiction. However, any way you cut it, it is probably simpler to just consider Nappa as the tallest out of all of them. Maybe if he had hair still, Nappa would claim that title quite easily.

7 Vegeta Happened, Again

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

Similar to other defeated villains in the Dragon Ball Z series such as Android 19 and Cooler, Nappa returns to Earth in Dragon Ball GT, when a whole bunch of them escape the confines of the afterlife after the creation of Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu’s dimensional portal during the Super 17 Saga, featuring the merging of the two Android 17s. Upon returning to life, Nappa encounters Vegeta, who was the one who first destroyed him and placed him in the afterlife. This time around, Vegeta has turned to the side of the heroes. Once again, Vegeta eliminates Nappa and sends him back to the afterlife. Thus, both times that Nappa has perished, it was because of Vegeta. Indeed, this is some sort of animated Deja vu.

6 Second Fiddle

25 Crazy Things You Didnt Know About Nappa From Dragon Ball Z

After the appearance of Raditz, Nappa is essentially the second prominent villain to fight the heroic Z Fighters. Similar to Raditz, he also holds the distinction as being the second Saiyan exterminated onscreen. During his battles with the Z Fighters, Nappa was a much more capable warrior than Raditz, and probably over twice as powerful than Goku’s older brother. Weighing in at a 4,000 power level, Nappa was able to handle the team of Chiaotzu, Tien, Yamcha, Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo. He was finally easily defeated by an extremely-upgraded Goku, who was able to cripple him by using the Kaio-ken power-up. His final demise came at the hands of Vegeta, who eliminated him for losing to Goku in such an embarrassing fashion.
