25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

The Pokémon franchise has been a massive hit among teens, young kids, and even adults. After the original games spawned an adventure that people of all ages could enjoy, it was only a matter of time before the internet got a hold of it.

Pokémon has been subject to a lot of memes and comics over the years that make fun of their various mechanics. After all, it’s ridiculous to believe that a tree could get in the way of a trainer who had a Charizard on their team. However, there are times when the twisted humor of the internet can be reflected in these comics.

At a basic level, there’s something fairly questionable about the Pokémon series as a whole, and it really makes one think twice before beating the living snot out of that wild Pidgey. We’re not trying to say that the series is an advocate for harming animals, but it does beg the question.

If you’re ready to have your entire childhood ruined, then read on to see 25 Pokémon comics that really crossed the line. None of the seven regions are safe when the internet is on the case.

25 Proper Substitution

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

One of the most widely-used moves in the Pokémon metagame is Substitute. What it does is swap out the actual Pokémon with a decoy that can absorb a few hits before the real one comes back into play. A lot of creatures have it in their movepool, and Kangaskhan is about to put a different spin on it.

Kangaskhan was given a Mega Evolution in Gen VI that allowed its infant to finally come out of the pouch and fight for itself. However, it does make things a bit more suspicious when a Mega Kangaskhan uses Substitute. All she has to do know is throw her child out to fight her battles while she just watches and stockpiles health for a few turns. This isn’t exactly what Game Freak had in mind.

24 After The Battle

Training Pokémon is a staple of the series. One of the most commonly-used methods of training is by traveling through various routes and battling wild Pokémon. However, trainers don’t usually catch these creatures, so it begs the question: what happens to them after they lose a battle?

While someone like Barry could suggest that trainers take the wild Pokémon to a Pokémon Center, that’s never the case. Instead, weak critters are lying around, making themselves perfect prey for much stronger Pokémon in the wild. That said, if trainers had to take wild Pokémon that they beat to the Pokémon Center, there’s no telling how much busier Nurse Joy and her Chansey would be across the entire world.

23 Type Advantage In A Nutshell

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

Quagsire is one of the most deceptive Pokémon in existence. After the first generation seared into our brains that water Pokémon were weak against electricity, Game Freak had to go and subvert our expectations with the second generation. They created Quagsire, who is a water and ground-type Pokémon. What this means is that electric-type attacks will have no effect on it.

Instead, the move type that you want to use against Quagsire is grass. It’s 4 times more effective than normal and does a lot of damage. Unfortunately, as this comic points out, Quagsire will have a rough time rolling around in the grass. It won’t be long before it starts breaking out and needs a trip to the Pokémon Center.

22 Pokémon Anime Randomizer

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

One of the more popular additions to the Pokémon series was a randomizer. This program works with ROMs you download for your computer and makes it so the Pokémon you find are entirely random. Many players who live on the wild side will often combine this with a Nuzlocke challenge to make things much more interesting.

That said, what would happen to the journey of Ash Ketchum if his Pokémon journey were totally randomized? This comic provides a perfect look. Instead of getting a Pikachu that hated being in its Poké Ball, Ash could very well acquire a Wailord that was just as temperamental. At least the Gym Battle against Brock in Pewter City would be a breeze for the young trainer.

21 Everything More Fun

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

When Pokémon GO came out, there was a lot of excitement across the entire world for this new app that allowed you to catch Pokémon in real life. Needless to say, Niantic and Game Freak probably didn’t anticipate that the game would get as much traction as it did.

Many people would spend hours walking around just to hit up the next PokéStop or try and catch that rare Magmar. This comic points out that the new app makes everything more fun. Are you in a bad neighborhood? Just boot up Pokémon GO and catch a Bulbasaur. Are you watching a politician give a speech? Just use the app and watch an Oddish dance around his head! There’s no short-selling the usefulness of the game.

20 We’ve Seen This Before

Back in the 90s, there was a bit of a debate going on between Pokémon and Digimon. Fans were arguing which one was better. As we all know, Nintendo and Game Freak’s franchise ended up winning the battle and the latter has since faded into obscurity (despite still technically going on today).

Despite winning the race, Game Freak hasn’t exactly had completely original ideas the entire time. When they introduced Z-Moves for Pokémon Sun and Moon, some were quick to point out that it was strikingly similar to the Burst Mode used in Digimon. However, the Burst Mode is arguably more useful, as it was a state of boosted power for the creature than just a beefed-up attack.

19 The Big Difference

When we all started playing Pokémon, we were all enamored with the idea of picking Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle. Countless times, we argued at the playground which one was better (most said it was Charizard). However, once Pokémon GO came out, a different argument came out that took the internet by storm.

In the game, there are three teams: Valor, Mystic, and Instinct. Each one has a different motto that is fairly self-explanatory. This comic perfectly illustrates the allure of both Valor’s emphasis on power and the hidden potential of Mystic, while simultaneously making fun of Team Instinct for being based on nothing more than Instinct. At least they like eggs in the yellow gyms. That has to count for something, right?

18 How Cute!

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

There are tons of cute Pokémon to gaze at lovingly. If the little creatures were real, we’d wager that an interaction would go very similarly to this conversation. After comparing their partners, two trainers would lament how cute their Pokémon are. Of course, the only rational response would then be to battle them in a 1 on 1 deathmatch that ended with only one winner.

While that’s not quite how battling works, it’s crazy to think that two seemingly different displays of camaraderie can exist in just five minutes. One second, you’re telling another trainer how much you like their Pokémon. The next, you’re telling your Pokémon to beat the snot out of the one that you just called cute a few seconds ago. It doesn’t quite add up, but it’s how the series goes.

17 You’re Kidding, Right?

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

There are several competitions in the Pokémon universe that involve catching creatures and comparing them with other people. In the Johto Region, they pride themselves in a bug-catching competition. Contestants are supplied with a series of special Poké Balls that they can use to capture bug-type Pokémon.

Within the games, though, there isn’t exactly a fair judgment when you capture a special Pokémon. Theoretically, you could capture one of the rarest Pokémon in the vicinity, like a Pinsir, and could still easily lose to little Joey who captured a top percentage Caterpie. In the real world, you would win for that achievement in a heartbeat, but because it wasn’t the focus of the games, Game Freak didn’t spend a lot of time making sure that the judgment was completely fair.

16 Shiny Hunting

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

Hunting for shiny Pokémon is one of the most difficult things you can do in the games. Not only are their rates incredibly stacked against you, but even by chaining and fishing, that doesn’t guarantee you’ll find one quickly. The shinies that are most challenging to obtain are starter Pokémon. It doesn’t help that a shiny Charizard is one of the most desired shiny Pokémon in the entire franchise.

The only way to enhance your odds of getting a shiny starter Pokémon without having to do extreme trading is through the Masuda Method. By breeding two Pokémon from different regions, you increase the chance of getting a shiny offspring out of an egg. That said, it takes hundreds of eggs before you eventually get a shiny, and people just release the ones that have the normal color.

15 The Hogwarts Region

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

If Pokémon Red and Blue ever made it to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, it wouldn’t quite be the magical experience that the kids would hope it to be. It particularly doesn’t help that three of the Pokémon from the original 151 have similar names to a certain magical spell in the series.

Saying Abra and Kadabra too quickly would sound an awful lot like “Avada Kedavra.” Without thinking about it, Hogwarts could have a crazy elimination count on their hands. Forget the basilisk in the walls or the dementors patrolling the grounds, having the Pokémon games on hand could easily cause much more tragedy in the long run. It looks like Dumbledore and the rest of the professors at the school are going to have to put some restrictions on the Game Boy.

14 Drowzee Can Learn Dream Eater

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

Each Pokémon can learn several moves as they level up and can be taught unique ones by the Move Tutor. While there are some questions about the types of particular creatures, one fact that will never make any sense is that Drowzee cannot learn the move Dream Eater without the use of a technical machine (which is essentially like taking a steroid to perform better in a physical sport).

What contradicts this is Drowzee’s description in the Pokédex. It explicitly states that the Pokémon is known to eat dreams for its own pleasure. Why in the world that wouldn’t translate to it naturally learning Dream Eater is anyone’s guess, but Game Freak kind of dropped the ball on that one. It has literally been known to do this through its own biology.

13 Worth It

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

When Pokémon GO first came out, people were desperate to try and find the rare Pokémon in their backyards. However, it led to a lot of accidents in the real world. There were people walking on the Interstate just to get a shot at capturing a Pikachu. There were even crimes committed using this app alone.

The bottom line is that people will be dumb when they’re motivated enough. Granted, this comic is a bit of a hyperbole, but it still gets the point across. Just to catch their first Horsea, we’d bet that some people would’ve jumped right into a lake for a chance to snag one. Making matters worse is the idea that he was going to go home and make a comic of the game.

12 Mega Evolutions Are Great

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

Mega Evolutions were a controversial addition to the Pokémon franchise (due to some criticisms about it being strikingly similar to Digimon). Because of this, there were a lot of people willing to make fun of the altered designs.

As a matter of fact, that was the entire reason that this comic was created. We have to praise the visual joke about it discussing “3 new Mega Evolutions” and showing the three Hoenn starters before quickly shoving Blaziken away. Then, the speaker decides to cleverly point out a lot of the flaws that the internet pointed out Mega Sceptile and Mega Swampert for having already. The former’s trail has a strange color palette like a Christmas tree and the latter has massive arms and tiny legs (but somehow manages to swim swiftly).

11 Top Percentage Tackle

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

Some of the best Pokémon jokes come from taking what is said canonically about the creatures and applied to a real, physical sense. For example, Magcargo has an insanely hot body temperature, yet some trainers have been shown to hug the lava Pokémon. If it were real, then those trainers should be deceased.

In the same way, Mudkip has the highest base attack stat when compared to all of the other starter Pokémon. While that’s great for when it’s used in battle, it’s not great when Mudkip comes barreling through the door ready to give a hug to its trainer. Odds are that you’ll get some bones cracked along the way and have to be taken to the hospital. If you have a Mudkip, make sure that it understands its own strength!

10 Where Are My Eggs?

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

We’ve all experienced the age-old struggle where we are trying to get special Pokémon eggs created. After putting the right Pokémon in the daycare center, we anxiously wait until the Day Care Man has stepped outside of his house and tells us the exciting news that there is a new egg waiting for us to pick up. Of course, you had to hop on your bicycle and travel back and forth until that glorious moment happened.

However, there could be a reason that it sometimes takes forever before we ever get an egg. Perhaps there’s another trainer eating some hard-boiled eggs with the old man. Meanwhile, the rest of us trainers are bicycling back and forth wondering why in the world our precious pets haven’t had any children yet.

9 Getting Back Into Pokémon

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

When Pokémon Red and Blue came out, many of us were young and had just been introduced to an entirely new world. Most people played more games as the franchise continued but, at some point, fell out of the franchise and moved on to bigger and better things.

That said, Game Freak can sometimes put out a new Pokémon game that captures your attention and makes you remember why you fell in love with the series in the first place. However, you forget that the Pokémon you’ve been training have been sitting in the PC storage or their Poké Balls for an extremely long amount of time. For all intents and purposes, when you go to call them out again, you could very well be bringing out a skeleton instead of a Pokémon.

8 On The Other Side Of The Fence

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

Some Pokémon comics are funny and others are downright crazy by showing us the other side of the spectrum. We have no repercussions with catching the first Pokémon we see out in the wild (we’ll even hunt for them in the tall grass with no problem), but we never stop to consider what that does to the wild Pokémon.

If a group of Pokémon had lived together for a while, how traumatic would it be to see one of your best friends be found by a trainer and battled before being captured and taken away from you forever? This comic makes us rethink hunting for more wild Pokémon. We can only imagine the kind of mental damage we do when we snag a creature from a horde battle even more. We could potentially be ripping entire families and ecosystems apart.

7 A New Education

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

The Pokémon anime was loved when it first started, but it didn’t take long before people became sick of it. For starters, Ash began the franchise at age 10 for his Pokémon journey and is still canonically the same age (despite the show having been going on for decades). That’s just one of the several criticisms of the show.

Another popular joke is that Ash has never gone to a proper school because he left to go on a worldwide journey as a kid. However, the Sun and Moon anime has seen Ash going to a special Pokémon school taught by Professor Kukui. However, when they talk about the school, there’s no reason to believe that he would know what it was. That’s when he has to go and talk to his mom to get some explaining in order.

6 An Existential Crisis

25 Pokémon Comics That Are A Little Strange

It’s always the worst when someone poses those questions that require so much philosophical thought that you end up thinking twice about your own reality. Well, it seems that the Pokémon universe isn’t immune to that. We all know that Pokémon often say their own names, but it does beg the question: do they speak the name we give them or do we name them by the sound they make?

In the real world, it makes sense that we would name an animal after the sound that it makes, but where that becomes a problem is when you consider that some Pokémon make completely different noises. It is an argument that could go back and forth for ages (there are problems when you argue the other way around as well).
