Netflix’s brand-new prequel spinoff to Zach Snyder’s Army of the Dead, Army of Thieves, depicts the adventures of the first film’s Ludwig Deiter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer (who also directed this feature). Deiter, first known as Sebastian Schlencht-Wöhnert, teams up with a crew of high-stakes burglars in an attempt to become safecracking legends.

The cast of characters all have varied skill sets that make them assets in the field, however, intelligence often proves to be the name of the game with this particular heist. In that arena, some of the characters have a clear advantage over others.

7 Brad Cage

Brad Cage, also known as Alexis Broschini, behaves as if a gruff ’90s hero in an underrated action thriller arrived in the present day and decided to embark on a series of elaborate and lengthy heists. He changes his name to a combination of his heroes, Brad Pitt and Nicholas Cage, whom he claims to have modeled his life after.

Though Brad has quite a bit of brawn, he has very little brains to go along with his physique. He claims to be the leader of the group but appears to have a very little part in their planning process. And, when things get difficult during the second heist, it is Brad’s bright idea to create a distraction by loudly and violently robbing the bank in a Ronald Reagan mask, drawing plenty of extra attention toward their escape. In the end, it would appear that the brain is the one muscle that Brad doesn’t spend a considerable amount of time working out.

6 Delacroix

Delacroix is the head of the Interpol squad that is hunting Sebastian’s band of thieves, who could be considered one of the best heist movie squads if they pull off their caper. Having encountered the other members of the group previously, Delacroix has a score to settle with them, especially with Brad Cage. He pushes his team to the brink of exhaustion in attempting to catch these crooks, often against his better judgment.

There is something to be said for Delacroix being a detective for Interpol; clearly, at some point or other, he exhibited the intelligence necessary to rise to such a rank. However, it is clear during the events of the movie, that he has allowed himself to be consumed with capturing Cage and his team. Any intelligence that the character may have had goes out the window, and he is often made out to look like a fool.

5 Rolph

Rolph is the getaway driver for the team’s heists, almost always munching on a meaty sandwich while he does so. Despite initially appearing standoffish, he turns out to be a rather friendly guy, sharing several bonding moments with Sebastian in the second act of the film.

He may just be the driver, but Rolph has a mind to think for himself too. He appears to have disagreements with the way that Brad handles dumping Sebastian after the second heist, even though he doesn’t act on these inklings. And, when he and Brad go off on their own, Rolph is the one who suggests that they attempt to track Gwendoline’s phone, an obvious solution to their problem.

4 Gwendoline

Gwendoline is the self-assured resident action heroine of the group, and one of Army of Thieves’ best new characters. Acting as the teammate that makes first contact with Sebastian, she is also an expert pickpocket and a skilled fighter. She is driven to steal in order to feel alive but shares Sebastian’s reverence for the craft as well (though perhaps not the same extent).

Played by Game of Thrones’ Nathalie Emmanuel, Gwendoline knows her stuff. While she does not have the depth of expertise in a particular field like certain other characters, she has enough logic and reasoning skills to keep up with the best of them–even keeping track of Sebastian’s long rants on the origins of the safes as he cracks them.

3 Beatrix

Beatrix is the trusty second-in-command in Delacroix’s Interpol unit. Over the course of the film, she witnesses her commander descend further and further into madness as he attempts to catch these thieves, often having to pull him back from crossing the line in doing so.

Beatrix is one of the most intelligent characters in the film. Her calmness counteracts her superior’s erratic strategies, and she often acts as the voice of reason in the room. It is she who always seems to have an idea as to what the next strategy of the thieves may be, and likely would have caught them sooner had she been the one in charge rather than Delacroix.

2 Korina

Korina is the aloof but caring hacker in Sebastian’s new group. She proves to have a genuinely good heart after Brad loses his cool and kicks Sebastian out of the group, opting to follow Gwendoline back to the safecracker’s apartment to continue the heist on better terms.

Korina’s skill set may be one of the most impressive out of the entire group. She is prepared for almost any eventuality that they may encounter on their heist. Her skills are displayed to the maximum, from her reveal as the early leaker of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (which contains the greatest swordfight in the franchise) to the implication that she has done “cooler things” as well. Korina clearly has the brains to handle operations like the ones depicted in the film.

1 Sebastian

Sebastian Schlencht-Wöhnert made his first appearance this spring in Army of the Dead, where his character went by the name of Ludwig Deiter. In this prequel offering, Sebastian is recruited to be the safecracker for a group of thieves seeking to make heisting history. Though he is often out of his depth, he always rises to the occasion and surprises himself in doing so.

There is no denying that Sebastian is the most intelligent character in the Army of the Dead franchise. Not only does he have vast stores of knowledge concerning history, music, and film, he also has honed the strategy of his craft to an extreme level. Sebastian proves in his spinoff film just why he is such an important facet to any group he works with.
