All 8 Times Anakin Fought Count Dooku In Star Wars Canon (& Who Won)

Anakin Skywalker and Count Dooku fought on several occasions in the Star Wars canon, resulting in a mix of stalemates and wins for both the Jedi and the Sith Lord. First clashing in Attack of the Clones, Dooku left his mark on the young Jedi, fuelling his anger in subsequent duels. By the time of their final encounter in Revenge of the Sith, Dooku remained confident in his abilities, but Anakin had come a long way since his padawan days.

Before pledging allegiance to Darth Sidious, Count Dooku was once a Jedi trained by Master Yoda. He was a skilled swordsman, carrying himself with grace and was undoubtedly familiar with various combat styles. Having trained Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan’s former master, it is little wonder he proved to be a tough match for Anakin throughout their Star Wars battles.

Dooku always belittled Anakin, proudly taunting him throughout their duels. His arrogance encouraged the young Jedi to lean into his anger, gradually helping create the foe who would cause his ultimate demise. Their encounters throughout Star Wars: The Clone Wars paved the way for Anakin to become one of the galaxy’s strongest fighters – and its greatest threat.

Attack of the Clones

Their first duel in the Star Wars canon occurred at the outbreak of the Clone Wars, where Anakin and Obi-Wan attempted to prevent Dooku’s escape during the Battle of Geonosis. Arriving in Dooku’s hangar, the impulsive Anakin refused to listen to his master. Rather than fight the Sith lord together, he rushed at Dooku and was met with a bolt of Sith lightning. This recklessness would have ensured Obi-Wan’s death, if not for Anakin’s ability to quickly overcome the attack and block Dooku’s blade.

Anakin’s arrogance showed in his attempt to use both his own and Obi-Wan’s lightsaber at once. Granted, this was encouraged by his master, but it revealed Anakin’s inexperience. His own lightsaber was quickly destroyed, and he severed a power cable, plunging the room into darkness. This prompted one of the franchise’s worst duels, with strange closeups only illuminating their faces as they twirled their weapons around like glowsticks. Their bodies were barely visible, making it difficult to judge their movements. Regardless, this move gave Anakin no advantage as Dooku swiftly severed his arm, leaving him and Obi-Wan to be saved by Yoda’s intervention. The duel itself was disappointing but it made clear Anakin’s impetuous nature and gave him his first taste of the power possessed by the dark side.

The Clone Wars (Movie)

Anakin’s next fight with Dooku featured in the film version of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a precursor to the television series. Battling on the dunes of Tatooine, Dooku attempted to prevent Anakin from returning Jabba the Hutt’s kidnapped son. Straight away, Dooku used his lightning attack again, only this time Anakin was prepared. The fight wasn’t particularly long, with very stiff animation, but Dooku did taunt Anakin to get into his head. Knowing Tatooine is Anakin’s detested homeworld, Dooku tried to remind him of painful memories. He almost got the upper hand, slicing a backpack supposedly containing Jabba’s son. However, it was merely a pile of rocks. The fight itself was a stalemate. Anakin came off better in the rematch because it was only a distraction while Ahsoka carried the infant to Jabba’s palace. He wasn’t hindered by his emotions and willingly left Dooku in the desert to help the besieged Ahsoka.

The next time Anakin fought Count Dooku, the Sith took the fight to Naboo, a sure point of contention given Anakin’s relationship with Padmé Amidala. While they came face to face earlier in the show, the pair didn’t engage in combat until Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 4. With the Separatists’ General Grievous detained by the Republic, Dooku was instructed by Darth Sidious to capture Anakin and force a prisoner exchange. Anakin went on the offensive and handled himself fairly well until Magna Guards appeared. Overwhelmed by the droids, Dooku took advantage of his weakened state and shocked him into unconsciousness with lightning once again. Dooku effectively cheated, aided by the guards in seizing Anakin rather than defeating him in a traditional duel. He was always perfectly in control of the situation, making this an easy victory.

Escape From Kadavo

Anakin next fought Dooku on the planet Zygerria, during his conflict with the slave trade later on in season 4 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Anakin was a former slave himself and the experience could have seen him consumed with hatred, but he managed to overcome his feelings and save Queen Miraj Scintel, who refused to obey Dooku and execute Anakin. The unarmed Jedi knight was surprisingly composed and demonstrated his adaptability by using a whip to strike Dooku’s lightsaber. However, their altercation was brief, and he was – once again – incapacitated by Sith lightning. While a strong fighter, Anakin hadn’t yet learned how to block the lightning attack, and Dooku remained relatively at ease throughout. Dooku won, but Anakin did manage to escape with the queen, significantly undermining the Sith’s victory.

Crisis on Naboo

Anakin and Dooku clashed once more in The Clone Wars season 4, with Dooku leading a troupe of bounty hunters, including a disguised Obi-Wan, to kidnap Chancellor Palpatine during Naboo’s Festival of Light. Anakin and Palpatine were lured into a trap, cornered in the palace dining hall by Dooku and his Magna Guards. With Palpatine’s life (supposedly) at stake, Anakin set upon his opponent in their most intense clash. His swings were wild, but he was skilled enough to cut down all the objects thrown at him. Dooku was perfectly calm at first, cocky, even, with his one-handed dueling style, but unprepared for the enraged Jedi’s frenzied attack.

Suddenly knocked on his back, the Count actually looked worried. Anakin repeatedly slashed at Dooku’s blade, like when Luke Skywalker would overpower his father in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. It’s an important detail that effectively connects Anakin – and Vader – to his future son and implies how formidable they both can be when overcome with fury. Anakin attempted to choke Dooku to death in a very ignoble move, mirroring his later duel with Obi-Wan on Mustafar. Anakin’s untamed rage distracted him, leaving him susceptible to Dooku’s lightning trick. Obi-Wan arrived in time to help rescue Palpatine while Dooku just barely escaped in his ship. Despite nearly being strangled to death, Dooku praised Obi-Wan’s gallantry while dismissing Anakin’s skills. Of course, he waited to say this until safe from Anakin’s wrath. There was no clear winner, but their fight revealed Anakin’s increasing power and his struggle to control his emotions. What’s more, the sequence served as a thrilling prelude to Revenge of the Sith, with Palpatine watching the duel in silent delight.

The Lost One

Before the final chapter of George Lucas’ prequel trilogy, Dooku fought both Anakin and Obi-Wan at the headquarters of the Pyke syndicate. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 6 Anakin and Obi-Wan investigated the death of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. Their questioning of the spice runners was interrupted by Dooku’s arrival. Sidious had grown frustrated with Dooku, and the ensuing fight gave the sense the war was nearing its end. The duel primarily took place on a perilously high walkway, with Anakin faring better than Obi-Wan. The clash further cemented Anakin’s agility and aggression, but Dooku by no means struggled. It wasn’t until the Pykes opened fire that he decided to retreat. Ultimately, Anakin’s duel with Dooku was another stalemate, but at least the Jedi had him on the run. The Count wasn’t known for showing much emotion in battle, usually remaining composed, but his quick exit gave the sense he was increasingly wary of the young Jedi’s powers.

Sacrifice

While not a real fight, Yoda’s dark vision of Anakin and Dooku dueling provided a fitting premonition of the dark times to come. Formerly serving as the show’s final episode before it returned on Disney + years later, the season 6 finale of The Clone Wars effectively set the tone for Revenge of the Sith. Yoda’s vision predicted the dark side’s growing influence and Dooku’s grim fate at Anakin’s hands. The fight lasted only moments – Anakin leaped over Dooku’s lightning, cut his leg, and caught Dooku’s falling lightsaber before holding both blades to the Sith’s throat. The scene perfectly foreshadowed their true final encounter, including how Anakin would avoid his previous mistakes, and illustrated how Yoda was yet another Jedi who saw darkness in Anakin but failed to act in time to save him – and the Republic.

Revenge of the Sith

Three years after their first duel on Geonosis, Anakin and Dooku met for the final time during the Battle of Coruscant. Anakin and Obi-Wan successfully boarded Grievous’ flagship to rescue Chancellor Palpatine. On this occasion, both Jedi had confidence in defeating Dooku despite their earlier failures. These previous battles had taught them to be more mindful of the Sith lord’s tricks. Still out-matched, Obi-Wan was quickly knocked unconscious, but this only enraged Anakin, who displayed the more aggressive Djem So lightsaber combat style. Dooku was clearly unnerved yet tried to deflect through more taunting.

Dooku could merely defend himself from the onslaught. Anakin kept close contact, with Dooku unable to utilize his old trick – especially once the Jedi severed both his hands. As glimpsed in Yoda’s vision, he seized the Sith’s lightsaber, rendering his enemy helpless. Anakin’s sinister expression revealed how he was learning to harness his rage without leaving himself open to attack. Showing the extent of Palpatine’s manipulation of Anakin, he convinced the Jedi to behead the Sith and forego the Jedi Code. While Anakin’s victory was perhaps too quick given his difficulty in previous battles, it was clear the veteran Sith lord’s ego was no match for the Jedi’s skill.

While Dooku had the upper hand in several previous fights, he often relied on droids as backup and would retreat when cornered. Star Wars couldn’t fully sell the idea that Anakin would swiftly execute Dooku – or that Obi-Wan would be so easily defeated – but Anakin’s abilities grew with each confrontation. Their rivalry wasn’t as emotive as that of Obi-Wan and Maul, but Dooku’s mocking of Anakin suggested a growing fear that he knew the overzealous Jedi would make a worthy replacement as Sidious’ next apprentice.
