While the exploits of a beachside family restaurant may not seem that terrifying at a first glance, those looking for some good-natured spooks this season shouldn’t skip out on the Belcher Family. Bob’s Burgers is one of the most beloved, adult animations of the modern age, and it’s managed to attract audiences young and old despite some of its surprisingly dark content.

Not a series to pull its punches, this series loves to dwell in the surreal, macabre, and outright cringe of the average human being. So much so, that Bob’s Burgers doesn’t even need to have a Halloween special to scare its audience (though it does have plenty of those). For more than a decade, Bob’s Burgers has devised plenty of exciting episodes that are about as spooky as they are hilarious.

10 The Silence Of The Louise – Season 8, Episode 2

Like many great pieces of fiction do, Bob’s Burgers knows how to pay homage to its contemporaries, even if that contemporary is a 1990’s psychological thriller. In a fun spoof of The Silence of the Lambs, Wagstaff School suddenly finds itself afflicted with a murder case…for Mr. Frond’s therapy dolls. Anguished, Mr. Frond puts the school’s long-anticipated waterpark trip on hold until the culprit comes forward.

With the stakes having never been this high, Louise rushes to investigate and turns to the only other person she knows who can get into the head of the disturbed perpetrator: her archnemesis, Millie Frock. This episode is full of twists, turns, shocks, and some inspirational poster making.

9 Lice Things Are Lice – Season 6, Episode 10)

Bobs Burgers 10 Scariest NonHalloween Episodes Ranked

It’s easy for most people nowadays to understand how terrifying a diseased outbreak can be. Or, at least, how terrifying the people of a diseased outbreak can be. Lice is one of the most common and disgusting issues afflicting public schools today, so it’s pretty understandable that Wagstaff of all places could have a few cases.

When Tina volunteers to assist in the nurse’s office, she finds herself in the middle of managing an entire quarantine, as Nurse Liz starts tracking a lice outbreak that begins with Tammy. However, as terrifying as a lice outbreak can be, Nurse Liz quickly begins the bigger dilemma, as her hunt for lice becomes more crazed and traps more kids in her office every second.

8 Sit Me Baby One More Time – Season 8, Episode 4

Bobs Burgers 10 Scariest NonHalloween Episodes Ranked

If Bob Belcher has taught people anything about fatherhood, it’s that having kids is pretty terrible. The Belcher children are far from the easiest rugrats, with the tamest one, Tina, still managing to bring up horrible memories for any experienced parent. That’s why it was simultaneously cathartic and worrying to see her be in charge of an actual child in “Sit Me Baby One More Time.”

When she and Tammy begin competing for babysitting gigs, they find themselves dual-sitting a little girl. However, as the night goes on, they slowly learn that this little girl is more spice than sugar. Soon enough, a nice babysitting gig becomes a battle for survival, as Tina and Tammy struggle to protect their tinkle-dinks.

7 World Wharf II: The Wharfening (Or How Bob Saves/Destroys The Town – Part II) – Season 4, Episode 22

Bobs Burgers 10 Scariest NonHalloween Episodes Ranked

This episode is the closer for a two-part storyline in Season 4; so for anyone who hasn’t seen Part I or just doesn’t have the time to see both, here’s a spoiler warning. After Bob successfully convinces the town and Mr. Fischoeder against selling the wharf, he and the illustrious aristocrat suddenly find themselves held hostage by Mr. Fischoeder’s younger brother, Felix.

In an elaborate scheme that would make Alfred Hitchcock or Tom & Jerry proud, Felix ties the two to support beams under the wharf, leaving their fates to the high tide. What ensues is Bob and Fischoeder’s suspenseful race to keep themselves from being killed by the very wharf that they spared.

6 Christmas In The Car – Season 4, Episode 8

Bobs Burgers 10 Scariest NonHalloween Episodes Ranked

Proof that Bob’s Burgers can make any holiday creepy, “Christmas in the Car” pushes an innocent, Christmas drive down a steep, icy slope. As the Belchers begin their drive home from a last-minute rush to get a Christmas tree, a candy cane truck nearly hits the Belcher’s car.

As the night goes on, Bob keeps coming across the candy cane truck, almost as if the driver was following them. In a suspenseful night that would scare both holiday seekers and night drivers, Bob tries to keep his family safe from the malicious hunt a giant candy cane. Also, Teddy gets caught in the kids’ trap for Santa and becomes pinner under a fridge, actualizing a less Christmas-y but just as terrifying fear.

5 The Deepening – Season 3, Episode 6

Imagine if Jaws acknowledged that the shark was animatronic. Now, imagine if Stephen Spielberg cheaped out and got a really bad one, facilitating a workplace hazard that would inevitably get out of control. That’s the real Jaws sequel fans deserved and Bob’s Burgers delivered.

In “The Deepening,” Mr. Fischoeder gets a new attraction for the wharf, a cheap, mechanical shark, and it just gets worse from there. Not to spoil too much, but an electrified, mechanical shark swims through land to destroy the restaurant.

4 Mutiny On The Windbreaker – Season 3, Episode 4

Bobs Burgers 10 Scariest NonHalloween Episodes Ranked

If there are two things that really encapsulate humanity’s fear of isolation, it would be getting held hostage and getting stranded at sea. There are probably more examples, but these two perfectly describe the vacation gone bad that is “Mutiny on the Windbreaker.” When a cruise ship captain gets a taste of Bob’s culinary expertise, he hires the Belchers to cater a dinner for the ship.

Unbeknownst to the eclectic family, that captain would want more than just one dinner. Quickly realizing that the captain intends to take the Belchers along on his voyage, Bob struggles to find a way out, as the crazed captain hunts him down and his family enjoys a free vacation. The stakes really aren’t that high, but that doesn’t excuse how horrifyingly inconvenient the entire situation is.

3 Dawn Of The Peck – Season 5, Episode 4

Bobs Burgers 10 Scariest NonHalloween Episodes Ranked

Because Bob’s Burgers won’t let their fans have nice holidays, “Dawn of the Peck” turns the tables on Turkey Day. Bob’s Burgers has a colorful history with Thanksgiving, but no episode has escalated quite as much as the literal turkey uprising here. There really isn’t a whole lot more to add.

An army of turkeys take over the town, the townspeople fight to survive, and Linda rushes through the wharf to save her kids from being pecked alive. Imagine Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds but larger, brawnier, and gobblier. After watching this episode, don’t expect to have a full appetite for that next Thanksgiving feast.

2 Crawl Space – Season 1, Episode 2

Bobs Burgers 10 Scariest NonHalloween Episodes Ranked

Fans didn’t have to wait too long before Bob’s Burgers got really dark. Episode 1 of the show literally focused on a scandal regarding human flesh within Bob’s sandwiches. Season 2 picks up the pace with a nice claustrophobia/isolation story. While monsters may scare kids, adults know to run for the hills whenever their in-laws come to visit. In Bob’s case, he goes to his walls.

Literally hiding within the crawl space of his building to get away from Linda’s parents, Bob suddenly finds himself stuck and lost within its walls. He must now both try to retain his own sanity within the dark, claustrophobic space as well as avoid his in-laws who refuse to leave.

1 Housetrap – Season 5, Episode 19

“Housetrap” really could’ve been a Halloween episode if it wanted. It just has way too many dark and spooky elements to have premiered in the middle of May, and the ominous Helen has quickly become one of the series’ coldest villains. During a dark and stormy night, the Belchers decide to help Teddy move some furniture for a house he’s taking care of.

Because the Belchers are Belchers, most of them don’t actually do that (sorry Bob) and just snoop around the house, slowly uncovering a sinister plot that might explain the mysterious death of the home’s owner. When the owner’s widow, Helen, suddenly returns, Linda and the kids take it upon themselves to confront her about the case, at the risk of their own lives.
