The main characters on Dawson’s Creek really run the gamut of human emotion throughout the show’s six seasons. One minute, the young adults living in peaceful Capeside are happy and the next, they feel like their entire worlds are ending. When teens are so moody, it can make it tough to like them all the time.

Regardless of what drama is going on in their personal lives, each character on the teen show has a compelling personality. Some are truly lovable and charming, whereas the rest of the cast take a bit more warming up to.

11 Mitch Leery

Dawson’s dad, Mitch Leery (John Wesley Shipp), isn’t a very likable character because he doesn’t have much of a personality. In the first season, he gives Dawson a lot of advice about sex and dating, which feels a bit creepy since he goes into a bit more detail than a parent typically would.

Understandably, Mitch’s heart is broken when his wife cheats on him, but even then, he acts whiny and doesn’t behave himself very well.

10 Gail Leery

Dawson’s mom, Gail Leery (Mary-Margaret Humes), doesn’t have many redeeming qualities. She has an affair and doesn’t seem to appreciate the otherwise solid marriage and beautiful family that she has.

Fans feel some sympathy for Gail when she shares that she has career ambitions that never came to fruition, but the rest of the time, she just seems to be moping around.

9 Bessie Potter

Girl next door character Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) lives with her older sister, Bessie (Nina Repeta), who is just as angry as Joey is.

Bessie is a hard character to like and even get to know. She puts up a wall, just like her sibling, and she’s so worried about money and raising her family that she doesn’t always pay enough attention to Joey. Sure, she’ll give her some lipstick and dating advice every once in a while, but it’s not really enough.

8 Audrey Liddell

Audrey Liddell (Busy Philipps) wins everyone over with her funny personality and ability to turn any situation into a party. But because Audrey is suffering so much, it’s hard to cheer along when she swears that she’s having a great time.

When Audrey is going through a bad period, she can be really mean, and it’s hard to love her as she seems determined not to ask anyone for help.

7 Dawson Leery

From the pilot and beyond, Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek) is the main character on the show, and even though that means that he’s interesting enough to carry the whole show, he does rub some people the wrong way.

The main problem with Dawson is that he complains a lot and thinks that everything should come easily to him. He also gets really sad and cries on a regular basis, making him prime meme fodder.

6 Evelyn “Grams” Ryan

Some seasons of Dawson’s Creek are better than others, just like Grams (Mary Beth Peil) is a lot nicer in some episodes than others.

It’s fascinating to watch Jen and her grandmother interact as they come from separate worlds and they don’t get each other in the beginning. They eventually work out an understanding and a sense of mutual respect, and before fans know it, they’re super close. Grams just wants the best for Jen and while she might seem strict and conservative, she’s actually a really sweet person.

5 Andie McPhee

Meredith Monroe’s Dawson’s Creek character Andie McPhee is bright, cheerful, and determined to do well, but she hides a vulnerable side as she struggles with her mental health.

Andie can be tough to like at first because she seems like she’s trying too hard to be perky and in a good mood — and in her case, she is, since she’s hiding the way that she really feels.

4 Joey Potter

Joey Potter is a tough nut to crack at first. She’s bitter and secretive about her true feelings, and since she’s in love with her best friend Dawson, she tends to shoot daggers at anyone who even looks twice at him.

Everyone has met someone like Joey, who seems really mean at first, but she’s actually an intelligent and fun person to be around. Joey has her reasons for not trusting people but she does grow up a lot during the show. She learns to be friendlier to people she doesn’t know.

3 Jen Lindley

Jen Lindley (Michelle Williams) is healing from a painful childhood when she arrives in Capeside, and since the others don’t know this, they think that she’s the pretty new girl who is going to make everything much more exciting.

Although Jen has a lot of insecurities like Joey, she does a better job of being nice, polite, and friendly to people she doesn’t know. That makes her a bit easier to like.

2 Jack McPhee

Kerr Smith’s character, Jack McPhee, is a truly lovable guy. He’s definitely more sensitive than some of the other characters and he’s really kind, too.

Jack wants to be there for his family and his friends, and he fits in so well with the other characters that he considers them part of his family, too. There’s really nothing to dislike here as he’s such a good person.

1 Pacey Witter

Pacey Witter has some good and bad traits about him, but he’s definitely the most likable character on Dawson’s Creek. There is something special about him.

Played expertly by Joshua Jackson, with a biting sense of humor and a playful sensibility, Pacey pretends to be more secure with himself and his place in the world than he really is. Once he breaks down his walls, he grows even easier to like as he becomes more honest and real. He has always been neglected by his family but once he becomes closer to the Capeside gang and falls in love twice, he becomes the sweet, smart man he was always meant to be.
