The CW’s shared DC Universe continues to grow, through the combined efforts of The Flash and Arrow, as well as the animated Vixen miniseries. In their second and fourth seasons respectively, both ongoing series have been rapidly introducing new characters to the expanding universe. The recent crossover episodes introduced new heroes Hawkman and Hawkgirl, as well as the immortal villain Vandal Savage, a major threat to the planet.
Both The Flash and Arrow are currently on their winter break, but when they return in January they won’t be coming back alone. Starting January 21st, The CW will begin airing its third and possibly final (for now) DC Comics adaptation – DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Starring a large portion of the supporting cast of Flash and Arrow, the series will spotlight some of these minor characters and send them on a time-traveling adventure to save the world and the future of humanity.
With the premiere of the new series drawing closer, the team behind the show has released the newest trailer for Legends of Tomorrow. The video offers a good mix of new footage and reused shots, giving the old scenes new context and allowing the character’s personalities to shine through. There’s also another close look at Firestorm’s new, comic-inspired costume and the introduction of an unknown villain from the future.
Where the previously released trailer emphasized the dark story material of the series, this trailer is largely focused on the lighthearted aspects of the show. The opening sequence features a very cool Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) ripped straight out of the trailer for a heist movie. The illusion is immediately broken when Sara goes off script and begins throwing knives, shocking Rip both with her disobedience and her skill at concealing an arsenal of weaponry. Those that enjoy the sometimes cheesy dialogue of Flash and Arrow are going to find a lot to like in this new series.
Though Legends will be giving plenty of attention to all of its protagonists, there seems to be a particular emphasis on Sara and her story arc. Sara was the earliest member of the team to be introduced in the continuity, prior to the launch of The Flash. From her time with the League of Assassins and as the Black Canary to her death and resurrection, Sara has easily been given the most attention and character development prior to Legends of Tomorrow.
As such, it makes sense to position her as a lead character. White Canary is an obvious vehicle for the more dramatic portions of the story and it’s already been confirmed that she’ll meet a new love interest, one currently living in the 1950s. While her teammates trade quips and one-liners with gusto, Sara could serve as the real heart of the series.
The Flash will return on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, while Arrow will return on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 and Legends of Tomorrow will see its series premiere on Thursday, January 21, 2016.
