In Demon Slayer, Zenitsu begins as a coward, but he shares a humorous commonality with Naruto’s Rock Lee. Rock Lee is an exemplary fighter, while Zenitsu is far from being able to best the shinobi. However, when both are not cognitive, they are forces to be reckoned with.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, created by Koyoharu Gotouge, follows the story of Tanjiro Kamado and his sister, Nezuko. She has been turned into a demon and he becomes a slayer of demons, hoping to save his sister and find a way to return her humanity. During his journey, Tanjiro meets and teams up with Zenitsu Agatsuma – another demon slayer in training. Naruto was created by Masashi Kishimoto and follows the adventures of the titular ninja, Naruto. Rock Lee – a fan-favorite character – is one of the shinobi in training that Naruto meets during his journey.

Zenitsu has a major flaw that haunts him through the early parts of the series. He is a coward and during confrontations with demons he is often too paralyzed with fear and anxiety to help out. In fact, he hides behind numerous characters and tries to avoid fighting all together. However, in Chapter 23 of Demon Slayer, his secret fighting style is revealed and in some ways, it is rather similar to Rock Lee’s drunken fist technique.

When Naruto’s Rock Lee becomes inebriated his usual fighting style changes. He is already shown to be a dedicated student of Might Guy. He trains hard – even more than many of his fellow Genin, with weights. However, his secret technique is not trainable and many of the fights he gets into aren’t quite as enjoyable as his drunken fight against Kimimaru. After accidentally drinking alcohol, Lee becomes intoxicated and his demeanor is completely changed. He is rude and his movements are less tactical than usual, making Rock Lee an unpredictable foe. His strength and speed remain, despite his cognition being lessened.

Similarly, when Demon Slayer’s Zenitsu gets too scared, he passes out. While most people would just end up unconscious and a liability in a life or death situation, Zenitsu is actually at his best when knocked out. He has the ability to sleep fight and in Chapter 23 he wastes no time whatsoever in killing a demon. He also has a very easy go of it considering how unskilled he claims to be. At this point in Demon Slayer, Zenitsu only knows one major technique, but he knows it incredibly well – enough to do it in his sleep with more success than he can when awake. While asleep, his stances are perfect, his demeanor is serious, and his mind isn’t aware enough to have any fear regarding the situation he is in.

Although Rock Lee and Zenitsu may seem like polar opposites in the way they approach training and fighting, both are stronger – and are incredibly impressive fighters – when they have their cognitive abilities lessened. Being drunk certainly isn’t the same as being asleep, but neither is properly aware of their opponent in these states. While Zenitsu could stand to learn a few things from Naruto’s Lee, he is certainly poised to become a stronger demon slayer from this point onwards. His fear may be debilitating, but if he could ever move past it, he’d truly be a force to reckon with. Naruto’s shinobi – including Rock Lee – tend to be braver than Demon Slayer’s Zenitsu, but he is far more skilled than he realizes early in his journey.
