Now that the dust has settled on Ryan Reynold’s snarky take on the titular Detective Pikachu in Detective Pikachu, there is now a much clearer picture of just how well the movie did.

People are often disapproving of movie adaptations of video games and vice versa. Frequently, many cite the Super Mario Bros. movie as a prime example of how not to make a video game movie adaptation. On the other hand, video game adaptations of licensed properties, as seen in Superman 64, can be difficult to get right as well.

However, there have been some great licensed games over the years. For example, Insomniac’s fantastic PS4 exclusive Spider-Man title, like the Arkham games before it, proved that these projects can’t be written off because of adaptations preceding them. It’s certainly understandable that a lot of moviegoers were dubious going into Detective Pikachu, though.

Detective Pikachu had originally come in the form of a 3DS title released in March 2018, which an odd little puzzle game starring a young boy named Tim and a talking, mystery-solving Pikachu. It was short and simple, but it was quite fun for franchise fans. The movie, meanwhile, proved to be a much bigger deal.

It also got mixed reviews, but it still proved to be the most critically-acclaimed video game adaptation ever to hit the big screen. Given the film’s competition, this doesn’t come as too big of a surprise. Interestingly, though, it still loses out overall to Warcraft with regards to ticket sales.

In terms of revenue, the World of Warcraft movie comes out on top. The film itself wasn’t entirely compelling, but the movie’s worldwide performance, in large part due to ad-driven success in China, remains superior to that of Detective Pikachu. Warcraft currently stands in 258th place on Box Office Mojo’s list of highest-grossing movies ever, at a total of $433.7 million in revenue. Detective Pikachu, meanwhile, is in 263rd place, at a total of $429.5 million.

Ultimately, however, a film’s success involves consideration of factors outside of commercial performance. In terms of reception, Detective Pikachu was the clear winner here, so that should cap off an impressive performance.
