The Doctor was a fresh-faced regeneration when he started traveling with Amy and Rory. They were his investigative team, his friends, his family. They always had a place setting for him at Christmas. He was Amy’s, Raggedy Man, the mad man in the blue box.

They were The Nose and The Legs to The Chin. The poncho wearing Peruvian Folk Band. The two people he knew couldn’t get a divorce. And when they were touched by the Angel, and their names engraved on a headstone before The Doctor’s eyes, it changed him.

Amy was headstrong. She didn’t let The Doctor push her around and challenged his decisions. She told him what was on her mind and did what she thought was right. Whether it was in “A Town Called Mercy,” where she told him not to let his dark side control him, to never stop being merciful. Or “Amy’s Choice,” where she risked killing them both if there was even the smallest chance of Rory being alive. And of course, “The Angels Take Manhatten,” where she followed her heart and knew she was going to go to Rory, despite The Doctor pleading for her to stay.

After the deaths of Amy and Rory, The Doctor grieved by removing himself from the world. In the 2012 Christmas Special “The Snowmen,” Clara followed him up a spiral staircase in the sky, where the TARDIS rested on clouds, unseen by the world. It was The Doctor’s way of accessing the planet he loved so much while remaining in solitude. His attempts to stay away and uninvolved even went so far as to try and use a memory worm on Clara. His coping methods were avoidance and hiding away from any potential close connections.

“It’s a fez. I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool.” The Eleventh Doctor loved his stylish accessories whether it be a bowtie or a fez. The fez obsession followed The Eleventh Doctor ever since he found one in a museum and lept through time in “The Big Bang.”

He wore one with Kazran in “A Christmas Carol,” and mentioned them throughout his adventures in time and space. A fez even made it into Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary episode “The Day Of The Doctor.”

The Doctor and Amy were close. Closer than what made Rory comfortable. The fact that The Doctor jumped out of Rory’s cake at his Bachelor party and told Rory about his kiss with Amy goes to show just how oblivious The Doctor is sometimes.

Rory was constantly forgotten, dying, or questioning his relationship with Amy. Not nice for Rory, but great for this meme.

The Eleventh Doctor was weird and wacky and out there. He was enthusiastic; jumping around, childlike in his efforts to suppress his guilt. He danced without care at Amy and Rory’s wedding reception. He was wonderful and wore funny hats, made a big thing out of adjusting his bow tie, played football with gusto, ate Jammie Dodgers, and rubbed his hands together with unconcealed excitement.

Rory was The Last Centurion, protecting The Pandorica and waiting patiently for 2,000 years. Amy was The Girl Who Waited, trapped on a planet and fending for herself over 36 years, waiting for The Doctor and Rory. And to draw the final curtain, The Doctor spent over 300 years on Trenzalore, protecting a small town and growing old. It might not seem like that long a time for a Time Lord, but it was his last regeneration at the time. The nature of The Eleventh Doctor was that he was constantly having to be productive, that he couldn’t live in a home, and just relax, even if it was spending time with Amy and Rory. This final act of waiting was his beautiful swan song.
