Ender Lilies: Quietus Of The Knights is a gothic Metroidvania developed by Live Wire, Adglobe Tokyo, and Adglobe Montreal Studio, and published by Binary Haze Interactive. The game is the latest attempt at creating a 2D Dark Souls-style Metroidvania and it wears its inspirations on its sleeve, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that Ender Lilies is an excellent title.
Ender Lilies stars a young girl named Lily, who wakes up in a ruined cellar with no memories of her life. The world outside has fallen to a curse caused by the rain, called the Blight, which has transformed humans and animals into hideous monsters. Lily cannot fight the creatures of the night of her own, but she doesn’t have to, as she has the ability to call on the undead spirit of the Umbral Knight, who had served her in life. As Lily explores the dangerous lands around her, she must battle powerful boss monsters that were once her protectors, and purify their spirits. Like the Dark Souls games, the narrative of Ender Lilies isn’t as important as the gameplay, which is why it’s shared sparingly.
The gameplay of Ender Lilies is a tried and true, familiar formula. The player starts out with the Umbral Knight spirit, which appears and performs a sword strike whenever the attack button is pressed. As the game goes on, the player will add a number of different spirits to Lily’s arsenal, each with its own attack patterns.
The fact that not all of these attacks appear from Lily’s body means that the player needs to grow accustomed to how each one works. Lily can dodge or dive in order to gain a few frames of invincibility. Mastering this move is essential, as Ender Lilies can be an extremely challenging game. Lily can also pray in order to heal, which acts in a similar manner to the Estus Flasks from Dark Souls, but this move has limited uses and leaves her vulnerable while casting.
Ender Lilies uses the classic Metroidvania gameplay loop of slowly exploring a massive map and returning to areas at a later point once she gains abilities that allow her to bypass hazards. It’s worth exploring every nook and cranny, as there are permanent health upgrades and accessories that can give Lily buffs. The player will need all of the help they can get, as Ender Lilies can be difficult, especially with its boss encounters. The later stages can also be frustrating, due to how much damage the regular enemies start to dish out. It’s easy to compare Ender Lilies to games like Hollow Knight and Salt & Sanctuary, and people who loved those games will find a lot to like here.
The visuals of Ender Lilies are gorgeous, as everything has a beautiful gothic fairy tale aesthetic. The minor enemies are mostly stock creatures, but the bosses cut impressive figures, especially the larger ones. The soundtrack is also great, with haunting piano melodies that add to the innocent, yet grim atmosphere of the game. The only major criticisms of Ender Lilies involve the attack animations, as they can fill the screen when using multiple spirits at once, making it hard to see enemy attacks. The other problem is the low variety of monster types in each area, as players will soon become accustomed to fighting the same small group of mobs over and over again. It doesn’t help that most of the minor bosses are just reskinned, regular enemies.
Ender Lilies doesn’t do anything particularly new or inventive, but it doesn’t need to. This is a game that knows exactly what it is and what it’s setting out to do. This is a fantastic Metroidvania that will scratch the itch of anyone looking to slowly peel away at the secrets of a huge game world, and it stays fun every step of the way, even if a few of those steps are on less surer footing when it comes to enemy variation or attack animation implementation.
