Many fans may not realize it, but there are several seasons of The Bachelor that did not end up with a proposal or engagement at the grand finale. The entire point of the Bachelor Nation franchise is to choose leads who are ready to fall in love and tie the knot with a soulmate. For that reason, the producers always cast contestants who are – or at least say they are! – prepared to take that leap as well.

On the other hand, a proposal isn’t always a given at the end of a season of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette. There have been several seasons that never got to the engagement phase, typically because the involved parties wanted to date for a while longer before committing to a proposal. With that said, there have also been Bachelor Nation seasons that ended with a lead being completely single, too.

Alex Michel & Amanda Marsh (The Bachelor season 1)

Some viewers may have forgotten that the first-ever lead of The Bachelor did not propose to anyone at the end of his season. Alex Michel and Amanda Marsh decided that they wanted to keep dating, but they just weren’t ready to commit to an engagement at the time.

Bob Guiney & Estella Gardinier (The Bachelor season 4)

On The Bachelor season 4, Bob Guiney gave Estella Gardinier a “promise ring,” but they never actually got engaged on the show. That was probably for the best, as Bob and Estella broke up shortly after their season was filmed.

Jesse Palmer & Jessica Bowlin (The Bachelor season 5)

Jesse Palmer and Jessica Bowlin were yet another example of a couple that wanted to keep dating before an official proposal could happen. Turns out that they never got engaged after the season either, breaking up in a matter of weeks following their reality TV debut.

Jennifer Schefft & Jerry Ferris (The Bachelorette season 3)

The only season of The Bachelorette in history to not end up with an engagement was season 3. Jerry Ferris did propose to Jennifer Schefft at the grand finale, but she did not accept it. As such, Jennifer and Jerry just kept on dating after the show, and they ultimately broke up as time went on.

Charlie O’Connell & Sarah Brice (The Bachelor season 7)

Charlie O’Connell also didn’t propose to Sarah Brice at the end of The Bachelor season 7. They did date after the show wrapped, but that relationship didn’t last very long.

Travis Lane Stork & Sarah Stone (The Bachelor season 8)

At the very end of The Bachelor season 8, Travis Lane Stork also didn’t get engaged to Sarah Stone. This was yet another example of a lead and a contestant deciding to just stay together as boyfriend and girlfriend for a while longer.

Lorenzo Borghese & Jennifer Wilson (The Bachelor season 9)

Unfortunately, the leads on The Bachelor were on a roll in the mid-2000s. During season 9, Lorenzo Borghese became the third consecutive lead to not propose to his chosen winner at the finale.

Brad Womack (The Bachelor season 11)

One of the biggest shockers in Bachelor Nation history took place on The Bachelor season 11. Not only did Brad Womack not propose to anybody at the finale, but he broke up with both of the final two women in his season, Jenni Croft and DeAnna Pappas.

Juan Pablo Galavis & Nikki Ferrell (The Bachelor season 18)

After a very long streak of consecutive proposals at the end of every season of The Bachelor, Juan Pablo Galavis broke the system by not proposing to Nikki Ferrell in season 18. Of note, Juan Pablo was also infamously rude to Clare Crawley, who was his season’s runner-up.

Colton Underwood & Cassie Randolph (The Bachelor season 23)

Colton Underwood freaked out when Cassie Randolph self-eliminated herself toward the end of The Bachelor season 23, going as far as jumping a fence for her. With that said, Cassie was clearly not ready for an engagement with Colton at the time, so the couple just kept on dating for a while after the season wrapped.

Matt James & Rachael Kirkconnell (The Bachelor season 25)

There were a million controversies surrounding The Bachelor season 25, particularly when it came to the relationship between Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell. Matt and Rachael decided to keep dating at the finale, but not get engaged yet. They briefly broke up after Matt was made aware of the Rachael/Old South party scandal, but they have since gotten back together in 2021.
