Heading into Cobra Kai season 3, the eponymous black and yellow dojo is in flux, and some key ex-members could ultimately side with sensei Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Cobra Kai season 3 is poised to escalate the karate war even further now that John Kreese (Martin Kove) has stolen ownership of the dojo from Johnny. The climatic brawl at West Valley High that ended Cobra Kai season 2 also caused a lot of collateral damage, including Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) shutting down his Miyagi-Do dojo.

Cobra Kai was originally founded by Kreese and bankrolled by his Vietnam war buddy Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffth) back in the 1970s. Their initially successful business to teach Cobra Kai’s violent brand of karate collapsed when Kreese disgraced himself at the 1984 All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament; after Johnny lost the championship to Daniel, Kreese attacked Lawrence and was, in turn, humiliated by LaRusso’s sensei Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita). Johnny and the rest of Cobra Kai’s students quit, leaving Kreese penniless. A year later, a desperate Kreese turned to Silver for help, and the two launched an elaborate scheme to destroy Daniel LaRusso while simultaneously relaunching Cobra Kai dojos all over the San Fernando Valley. But their despicable tactics at the 1985 All Valley tournament, coupled with Daniel beating Silver and Kreese’s hired gun, Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan), led to Cobra Kai being banned for life by the All Valley tournament committee – until Johnny Lawrence resurrected Cobra Kai over 30 years later.

Johnny’s version of Cobra Kai began with one unlikely student, Miguel Diaz (Xolo Mariduena), but it soon hit a boom period after Miguel’s burgeoning skills went viral, which led to many of his classmates at West Valley High seeking to learn Johnny’s brand of “badass” karate. The apex of Johnny’s tenure as Cobra Kai’s sensei was his dojo’s sensational showing at the 2018 All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament after Sensei Lawrence successfully got Cobra Kai’s lifetime ban reversed; Johnny’s students Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) and Aisha Robinson (Nichole Brown) placed in the semifinals but Miguel became the new champion after he defeated Johnny’s own son, Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan). Interest in joining Cobra Kai swelled again after Johnny’s dojo upstaged Daniel’s reborn Miyagi-Do dojo at Valley Fest.

Unfortunately, Johnny’s success motivated John Kreese to resurface and he successfully plotted to steal the dojo from under his former student. Kreese’s presence as a sensei also poisoned Johnny’s attempts to revamp Cobra Kai’s philosophy away from the “no mercy” tactics Kreese taught him decades before. Kreese making Cobra Kai more brutal led some students to quit and join Miyagi-Do. But after the dojo war in West Valley High ended up with Miguel hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, as well as Daniel’s daughter Samantha (Mary Mouser) bearing scars from fighting Cobra Kai’s Tory Nichols (Peyton List), the rosters of both dojos are once again being reshuffled.

Impressively, most of the major characters of The Karate Kid/Cobra Kai franchise have been members of Cobra Kai at one point or another – including Daniel LaRusso himself, briefly. Meanwhile, Miyagi-Do was much more exclusive until Daniel opened his dojo’s doors to anyone who wanted to learn Mr. Miyagi’s defensive style of karate in Cobra Kai season 2. With Miyagi-Do shuttered while Kreese consolidated his dojo’s most fanatical students going into Cobra Kai season 3, it’s possible that the rest of Cobra Kai’s also-rans could side with Johnny if Sensei Lawrence decides to fight back against Kreese. Here are the characters who bailed on Cobra Kai and Kreese in season 2.

Johnny Lawrence

Johnny is now a two-time ex-Cobra Kai, but his second exit stings the most. Not only did Kreese steal his dojo out from under his nose, but Johnny blames himself for Miguel becoming hospitalized. As seen in Cobra Kai season 3’s trailer, Johnny rededicates himself to Miguel after his student wakes up from his coma, and Sensei Lawrence takes it upon himself to help Miguel rehab and train.

It remains to be seen if Johnny will decide to war with Kreese in Cobra Kai season 3, or if he’ll even decide to recruit students beyond Miguel and create a competing Cobra Kai dojo. And Johnny may never get past his eternal grudge with Daniel LaRusso or make things right with his son Robby. But if and when Johnny gets his act together, he still has all the skills and knowledge as a badass sensei to train new karate students, with or without Cobra Kai’s banner.

Miguel Diaz

Miguel’s loyalty is to Sensei Lawrence and he never cared for John Kreese’s methods or philosophy. If Miguel had never been injured, it stands to reason he would have walked out with Johnny when Kreese pulled his power play and stole the dojo. Regardless, in Cobra Kai season 3, it appears that Johnny and Miguel are once again thick as thieves as Diaz’s sensei spearheads his rehab and training.

So whatever Johnny decides to do, you can count on Miguel to be right by Sensei Lawrence’s side and rolling his eyes at Johnny’s ignorance about all aspects of modern culture made after 1989. Miguel is also liked and respected by every other karate kid in Cobra Kai so he’d likely sway anyone who is looking to keep learning karate but hates Kreese to follow Johnny again.

Chris

Chris (Khalil Everage) joined Cobra Kai in season 2 along with his buddy Mitch (Aedin Mincks), but the two WWE fans had a falling out when Chris left the dojo and became Daniel’s student in Miyagi-Do instead. Mitch went all-in on Kreese’s “no mercy” philosophy, but none of it sat right with Chris, who has a stronger moral center. The two battled each other at the West Valley High brawl, with Chris coming out on top, but with Miyagi-Do closed, Chris may just join up with Sensei Lawrence if he still wants to pursue karate.

Demetri

Against all odds, the loquacious and neurotic Demetri (Gianni Decenzo) learned enough basic karate from Daniel to actually beat his former best friend Hawk at the West Valley brawl. But before Demetri reluctantly joined Miyagi-Do (after Kreese assaulted the nerdy teen), he tried to follow Hawk into joining Cobra Kai, but Demetri wasn’t able – or willing – to perform any of the physical aspects of learning karate. Still, Demetri should have gained some confidence by getting one over on Hawk and he might give training under Johnny another chance in Cobra Kai season 3.

Nathaniel

One of the youngest karate kids in Cobra Kai, Nathaniel left Kreese’s dojo and joined Miyagi-Do while his best friend Bert (Owen Morgan) stayed with the black and yellow karate school. Nathaniel and Bert went at it at the West Valley brawl but their showdown ended in a no-contest when security separated and carried them away. Like Chris, Nathaniel is left in a lurch by Miyagi-Do shutting down so he could follow Johnny if he opened up his own competing dojo.

Aisha Robinson

Aisha was Cobra Kai’s first female student and her loyalty is to Johnny. She was already having doubts about Kreese as a sensei and her loyalty was torn since she was still friends with both Sam and Tory despite their dojos’ rivalry. Nichole Brown will actually not be back for Cobra Kai season 3, and it’s unclear how Aisha will be written out, although given her wealthy parents, it’s possible they might just pull her out of West Valley High. But if Aisha does return in Cobra Kai season 4, expect her to join Johnny if she wants to continue her karate training.
