NBC is reportedly interested in reviving both The Office and 30 Rock in the near future. Back in the mid-2000s, NBC found two new comedy series to headline their lineups. Starting in 2005, an American version of The Office started airing on the network. Taking the office mockumentary approach, it helped to further launch the careers of Steve Carrell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, Ellie Kemper, and more. In 2006, NBC did it again by uniting Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Jack McBrayer, Alec Baldwin, Jane Krakowski, and others.

After multiple seasons on the network, both comedies ended their run in 2013. In the years since, devoted fans of both series have dreamed of ways to once again see the beloved properties brought back. While those hopes were thought to be far fetched, NBC is interested in bring both back.

Deadline is reporting that NBC is interested in reviving both series, but that neither are close to happening at this point. Deadline’s report specifically mentions rumblings around Hollywood of The Office being closer to being actually revived, with Greg Williams – one of the original creators – connected to these reports. However, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt says there are no offers out there currently.

We often talk about The Office, I’ve talked to Greg four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘maybe some day but not now.’ There is certainly an open invitation but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I’d like to do it.

Whereas Greenblatt’s answer leaves some room to hope that The Office could indeed return, his response to a 30 Rock revival makes this one sound less likely. He said, “I’d say to Tina, ‘Hey, you think some more 30 Rock makes any sense?’ She’d say, ‘I don’t know maybe.'”

While there isn’t much information to go on in terms of the approach each of these potential revivals would take, Deadline does indicate that The Office revival could star an entirely new cast. This would unfortunately mean that Scranton could be left behind with the series moving on to document another workplace. Fans of the original cast and story will undoubtedly have mixed feelings to a revival that is treated more as a remake/reboot, but a fresh version of the show could present plenty of room for new material.

The potential revival of 30 Rock could follow a similar path as well. After tackling one brand of television before and focusing on the writer behind the material, a revival could shift the perspective in a variety of ways. That said, either or both revivals (should they actually happen) could return to the idea of bringing back familiar faces. NBC is currently doing just that by reviving Will & Grace and Roseanne with many of the cast members set to return, while Netflix has also shown the ability to do the same with Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

Should Will & Grace and Roseanne perform at high levels for the network, it will not be a shock to see them more aggressively pursue the idea of bringing back The Office and/or 30 Rock. So even though neither revival is definitively happening right now, Greenblatt went on to say, “If Tina called and said ‘I’d do 30 Rock,’ I’d do it in a heartbeat, even for a limited run. The same about The Office.” So anything is possible.
