Every Ninja Eye Technique In The Naruto Franchise

Here are all the coveted and devastating ninja eye techniques featured in the Naruto franchise. Canonically referred to as dōjutsu in Naruto, the powerful ninja abilities utilize the eyes as a by-product of specific kekkei-genkai. Several characters in the explosively popular anime franchise have signature ninja eye techniques and dōjutsu are a major component of Naruto and its famously epic battle sequences. Beginning with Sasuke Uchiha and his ever-evolving Sharingan, the list of eye-based moves has continued to grow throughout the Naruto series and into its sequel anime, Boruto.

Despite deriving from the same Otsutsuki bloodline, each dōjutsu has its own unique abilities and can often only be possessed by a certain clan, under specific conditions. Thanks to the ever-changing world of Naruto, however, various characters have possessed eyes that were obtained via unnatural or violent means. A prime example of such an unnatural case is that of Kakashi, who received his Sharingan during the Third Shinobi World War from Obito Uchiha, with the downside that his ninja eye technique cannot be deactivated at will, leading to the rapid draining of chakra whenever in use.

For further context, the term dōjutsu refers to the eyes themselves, along with the number of latent abilities or jutsu that can be performed with the aid of the same. Such as in Kakashi’s case, dōjutsu can be transplanted onto others, but the success rate is heavily dependent on the individual’s psychological compatibility, along with their genetic predisposition. While there are a wide number of dōjutsu techniques, the Byakugan, Rinnegan, and Sharingan are collectively termed the Three Great Dōjutsu. Here’s every Naruto ninja eye technique.

Byakugan

Every Ninja Eye Technique In The Naruto Franchise

Possessed by members of the Hyuuga clan such as Neji and Hinata, the Byakugan’s primary purpose is to give the user a deeper level of sight. The technique can be used to see across great distances, pinpoint chakra, and penetrate through barriers. In battle, the Byakugan can track an opponent moving at great speed or attempting to stay out of sight. The Hyuuga eye is depicted as being entirely white and becomes strained when activated, but mixed-blood descendants such as Himawari are born with regular eyes that can transform the Byakugan. When compared to the Sharingan, the Byakugan offers greater chakra visibility, enabling the user to distinguish certain types of clones from the original, along with specific chakra signatures.

Sharingan

Perhaps the most famous Naruto ninja eye technique, the Sharingan is exclusive to the Uchihas but has been stolen or gifted to various others over the course of the narrative. The likes of Sasuke can use Sharingan to copy the techniques of their opponents and to see through illusions and genjutsu. Equally, the Sharingan can also be used as a powerful tool of illusion in its own right. Members of the Uchiha clan must awaken their Sharingan eyes through training and an emotional trigger event. For instance, evolution into the Mangekyō Sharingan can only be experienced through the trauma of loss, granting user-specific jutsu in addition to its standard abilities.

Jōgan

The Jōgan is arguably the most mysterious Naruto ninja eye technique in the entire franchise, with little known about the true extent of its power. Possessed by Boruto and known only to the Ōtsutsuki Clan, the Jōgan has been used to detect chakra in a similar way to the Byakugan, but can also perceive inter-dimensional rifts. In the Naruto manga, the dōjutsu is almost featureless in appearance, wherein the pupil is barely visible, whereas the anime portrays the Jōgan as light blue in color, with a darkened sclera and visible pupil. With no previous known users and Boruto yet to master it, there’s likely much more than the Jōgan can do, but this will only be revealed once the true origin of the eye comes to light.

Mangekyō Sharingan

Every Ninja Eye Technique In The Naruto Franchise

The Mangekyō Sharingan is an advanced form of the Sharingan that has been activated and mastered by only a handful of the Uchiha clan. Interestingly, this eye technique is obtained when a particularly gifted and driven Uchiha witnesses the death of a loved one and brings a whole new host of powers are brought forth. Described as the “heavenly eyes that see the truth of all of creation without obstruction”, the Mangekyō Sharingan gives access to techniques such as Amaterasu and Susanoo, while also unlocking unique jutsu that differ between users, such as Obito’s Kamui. The drawback of using the Mangekyō Sharingan unchecked is severe damage to the user’s regular eyesight – something that can only be cured by replacing the blinded eyes with those of another Uchiha possessing the Mangekyō Sharingan.

Rinnegan

By recreating the chakra of the Sage of Six Paths, one can possess the god-like power of the Rinnegan. More so than other dōjutsu, the abilities of the Rinnegan seem to differ between users. For instance, Pain (Nagato) uses the eyes’ Six Paths move-set, Sasuke uses his Rinnegan to move through space via pattern recognition, while Madara can create a Limbo shadow clone to do his bidding. Many Rinnegan users can also produce black metal rods to wield as weapons or pin down foes. In essence, this Naruto ninja eye technique boasts extraordinary chakra and ocular power, although it cannot see through instructions such as smoke bombs. Interestingly, a seventh ability known as the Outer Path allows users to preside over life and death, granting them the ability to revive the dead.

Tenseigan

Introduced in the canon Naruto: The Last movie, the Tenseigan is a combination of Otsutsuki chakra with the Hyuuga Byakugan and was manifested by Toneri Otsutsuki. According to Toneri, the Tenseigan is powerful enough to crash the moon into the Earth but also capable of creating new organisms in the aftermath. This ninja eye power is demonstrated when the villain animates a stone warrior to battle Naruto. Aside from its control over life and death, the Tenseigan provides Toneri with the ability to fly and control the truth-seeking balls associated with the Sage of Six Paths. In terms of appearance, the Tenseigan, post achievement, turns the featureless Byakugan into blue pupils, resembling overlapping floral patterns.

Rinne-Sharingan

Possessing the power of the Ten-Tails Juubi, the likes of Madara and Kaguya opened the third eye on their forehead that combined the power of the Rinnegan with that of the Uchiha Sharingan. Since this extremely powerful combination is so rare in the Naruto universe, only some of its capability is demonstrated. The Rinne-Sharingan is used to cast a genjutsu spell over the entire world and also appears to facilitate travel between dimensions.

Naruto: Other Ninja Eye Techniques, Explained

Apart from these established Naruto ninja eye techniques, there are other, lesser-known dōjutsu that manifest as user-specific abilities, prompting the extent of their powers to remain unique and mysterious. A prime example is the unnamed dōjutsu used by Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, which transforms his iris and pupil yellow, granting a black wheel-like pattern with eight spokes. While much is not known about this particular dōjutsu, it is known to grant the user Sukunahikona, or the ability to shrink themselves or any inanimate object within their sight. Other examples are the Ketsuryūgan, appearing only in certain individuals of the Chinoike clan, along with Ranmaru’s kekkei genkai, which made his eye glow red and offered abilities such as penetrative vision and hindering the Byakugan. While the true extent of unusual and unique dōjutsu are still unknown, it will be interesting to witness whether newer renditions of the classic eye techniques are revealed in Naruto’s expanding universe.
