It seems that the delay of Final Fantasy VII Remake is also affecting the one-year exclusivity deal that Sony has with Square Enix, as the game will remain a PlayStation 4 exclusive until April 10, 2021.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced during Sony’s conference at E3 2015. The initial trailer ended with a message saying that gamers could play it first on PlayStation 4, leading fans to believe that the game would start out as a Sony exclusive, before moving to other platforms. Square Enix seemingly backed off this statement in the following years, stating that there were no plans to bring Final Fantasy VII Remake to other platforms. It was later revealed that the box for Final Fantasy VII Remake was shipping with a sticker, saying that the game could only be played on PlayStation 4 until March 3, 2021, making the game a timed exclusive for one year.

Square Enix recently announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake was delayed until April 10, as the game needed some extra polish before it was ready for launch. It seems that the delay has also affected the exclusivity deal, as the box art for the game on the official Square Enix website has been updated with a new sticker, stating that the game is now a timed exclusive until April 10, 2021.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is shaping up to be one of the biggest games of 2020 and it might be the biggest PlayStation 4 exclusive of the year. It makes sense that Sony would want to keep the game as an exclusive for as long as possible, which includes delaying the timed-exclusivity deal.

Square Enix has had a growing relationship with Microsoft over the past year, with many older Final Fantasy games coming to Xbox One in 2020. It seems that the PC gamers and Xbox One Final Fantasy fans around the world have now been affected by the game’s delay, as their wait to return to Midgar has been pushed back a little further.

Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released for PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020. The game is expected to be released on other platforms following the end of the one-year exclusivity deal, starting from April 10, 2021.
