Petyr Baelish, Littlefinger to most, was really the catalyst for what came to pass on Game of Thrones. He didn’t get the ending he wanted, but he certainly set everything into motion with his manipulation and lies. He wasn’t as smart as he thought he was in the end, but that didn’t make him any less evil.
He was good at what he did, which is why he got away with so much. But in a show full of villains, Littlefinger always stood out. Everyone else had someone they worked for. Be it Cersei who loved her children, the Night King who wanted to enhance his army, or Tywin who wanted his family to prosper, only Littlefinger seems to have been out for number one with no underlying reasons, and he ruined a lot of lives because of it.
10 Tells Cersei Where Sansa Is
Baelish has been away from King’s Landing for a little while by the time he returns post the death of King Joffrey and the rise of the faith militant. Perhaps he needed to prove he still held power in the capital, but that’s not a good enough reason for him to offer up the location of Sansa Stark.
Sansa, who Petyr claims to love, Sansa who has seen her family murdered, Sansa who is learning how to play the evil game around her. But Littlefinger tells Cersei where Sansa is and that if he is made Warden of the North he will give Sansa up, despite Cersei wanting her for murder.
9 Lies About The Dagger
It’s bad enough that Littlefinger lies, it’s made worse because he lies to the one person he claims to care about. He tells Catelyn Stark that the dagger that was meant to kill her son Bran used to be his before he lost it to Tyrion Lannister.
In fact, Tyrion never had anything to do with the dagger. Yet, this lie leads to the great schism between the Starks and the Lannisters and a great deal of bloodshed, heartache, and war. The damage one man can do with only a few words.
8 Pits Sansa Against Arya
Fans waited years and years for the Stark children to be reunited, only to watch them fall apart as Bran arrives as the three-eyed-raven and Arya returns as an assassin. Sansa seems ready to forgive all (as is obvious at her joy at being reunited with her least favorite sibling, Jon) but Littlefinger doesn’t offer her the chance.
He tells Sansa that Arya only came back to Winterfell to kill Sansa for betraying their family. Sansa thus becomes hesitant, afraid of her younger sister. All fans wanted was a loving reunion, and Petyr tried to ruin it all.
7 Kisses Sansa
To begin with, it’s gross to see a man about the age of her father making out with Sansa, but it’s worse when we remember that Sansa is under Littelfinger’s power at this moment. He has whisked her away from King’s Landing, she has no one to trust but him.
She has no one to follow but for him. She has no one to protect her but him. This is not protection. This is manipulation in the grossest and most unforgivable way. Perhaps it doesn’t have the far-reaching effects of some of Littlefinger’s other actions, but it stands out for its selfishness nonetheless.
6 Makes Lysa a Murderer
Lysa Arryn, the younger sister of Catelyn Stark, was always a little off her rocker, and it’s awful to watch anyone manipulate her. It’s particularly evil to manipulate her into murdering her own husband, Jon Arryn, the father of her beloved child, with a promise of love that he never felt or was willing to fulfill.
This, like the lie about the dagger used in the attempt on Bran’s life, was a major reason the Lannisters and the Starks had a falling out and the War of the Five Kings began.
5 Sends Ros to Joffrey
Ros was the harlot with a heart of gold. She meets Tyrion in episode one of Game of Thrones, has a short history with Theon, and then heads to King’s Landing where she makes far better wages working in one of Littlefinger’s brothels.
She is mistaken for Shae, Tyrion’s lover, and doesn’t give up his secret. Yet, Ros suffers and dies in one of the most gruesome manners on a show known for its bloodshed. Littlefinger sends Ros to Joffrey for a night, and the young psychopath uses her for target practice with his crossbow.
4 Lies About The City Watch
While Ned’s noble honest and moral standings likely would have led him into trouble no matter what after the loss of his friend and king, Robert, Littlefinger certainly helped to speed up the Stark patriarch’s fall.
By telling Ned that the City Watch would have his back he made very different choices when coming face to face with the newly “crowned” Joffrey and his mother Cersei. This leads directly to his imprisonment and, eventually, his beheading.
3 Pushes Lysa
Again, poor Lysa Arryn, she believed Littlefinger until the very end. Unlike Sansa, Lysa never learns from her early mistakes. She goes to her death believing that by poisoning her husband, Jon Arryn, she has earned Littlefinger’s hand in marriage, along with his loyalty, and his love.
This is why it is so easy for him to push her out the Moon Door. She trusts him, loves him, and he has no trouble getting close enough to murder the woman he manipulated until the very end.
2 Leaves Sansa at Winterfell
It was never a kind gesture to return Sansa to Winterfell when it was held by the Boltons, but it was even more horrible when Littlefinger left her in the North by herself. Littlefinger was a known entity, he held power at court, as well as power over the Eyrie.
His presence at Winterfell kept Ramsay, and his men, on their best behavior. By leaving Sansa in Winterfell alone he condemned her to the torture she later received.
1 Marries Sansa to Ramsay
Littlefinger’s leaving Sansa at Winterfell alone would have mattered much less if he had not offered her in marriage to Ramsay Bolton in the first place.
Horrible things happened to Sansa once she left her home for the first time, she was tortured and tormented and watched her father die in King’s Landing. But that all paled in comparison to what she suffered at Ramsay’s hands. None of that would have happened if not for Littlefinger.
