Between generations of wizards and magic passed down, there are so many different kinds of sorcery that happen when you mix different magical liquids to create a manipulative, love-struck, or even deadly concoction to use against your enemy. Here are 10 awesome Harry Potter potions that even the most die-hard fans don’t know about.

10 Alihotsy Draught

The Alihotsy Draught potion isn’t a mixture that you’ll find in the books or movies, but actually in the Harry Potter Trading Card Game. Also revealed in Harry Potter’s One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi book, Phyllida Spore states, “Never eat the leaves of the Alihotsy Tree. These leaves cause uncontrollable laughter.” This potion causes the victim to laugh hysterically, making it difficult to breathe or stay calm.

Leaves with circular edges colored green with reddish-brown polka dots make up the Alihotsy plant and are the main ingredient in this potion. While it might sound like it’s just a potion to use to pull a funny prank on a friend, some wizards have actually died laughing due to their Alihotsy allergies.

9 Draught of Peace

The Draught of Peace is a potion that’s not actually harmful to its taker. As its name suggests, it provides a sense of peace, calmness, and serenity. It helps to soothe anxiety, worry, and agitation. While it’s one of the more difficult potions to make because the order in which you put the ingredients plays a huge role in the potion’s effects, it’s still a great mixture to always have handy.

8 Dr. Ubbly’s Oblivious Unction

This potion truly puts the phrase, “Ignorance is bliss” to work. In both Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dr. Ubbly’s Oblivious Unction is referenced multiple times. Given to Ron after he is attacked by brains in the Department of Mysteries, this potion helps to heal wounds given by thoughts.

While we don’t know the exact ingredients of this potion, it’s been hinted that this mixture can help mental scarring. It helps its drinkers forget memories that are painful and that deter them from living their lives. Madam Pomfrey has suggested that even in a world of magic, thoughts can still leave scars.

7 Babbling Beverage

The Babbling Beverage is exactly what it sounds like – a drink that causes you to babble. Once taken, this potion will make the drinker unable to stop speaking even if they wanted to. What are the things that are said? Literally nothing but absolute nonsense.

This potion is one that’s mostly used to distract people or to sabotage someone by making them talk way more than they need to. Adding Valerian sprigs, aconite, and dittany are the ingredients to making this potion. To active the potion, a wizard would have to use it with the Babbling Curse.

6 Wolfsbane Potion

In J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts, we learn that werewolfery is something that has existed in the wizarding world for many years. Newt Scamander reveals, “There is no known cure [for werewolfery], although recent developments in potion-making have to a great extent alleviated the worst symptoms.” This potion is called the Wolfsbane Potion

As we meet Remus Lupin later in the HP series, we learn that he has been cursed with werewolfery and finds hope in the Wolfsbane Potion. But after finding out that the ingredients were hard to obtain and extremely expensive, turning into a werewolf every night just became something that Lupin had to learn to control on his own.

5 Fire Protection Potion

Also known as the Ice Potion, this drink allows its taker to be protected from the effects of fire. Once taken, you’ll be able to move straight through fire without being burned, scarred, or hurt in any way at all. It’s a potion that is used to move through fires and extremely helpful when you’re walking through dangerous territory.

Bursting mushrooms, salamander blood, and wartcap powder are just a few ingredients that activate the potion’s powerful, protective magic. Snape once used this potion to protect the Sorcerer’s Stone back in 1991.

4 Caxambu Style Borborygmus Potion

The Caxambu Style Borborygmus Potion is a mixture that not many HP fans know about. Manufactured by the Hogwarts Apothecary Department, this potion causes its taker to experience extremely loud and unpleasant stomach growling.

Developed in Caxambu, Brazil, this potion is most likely used for laughter or distraction. Infecting your opponent with the effects of loud stomach growling might not appear too harmful, but it certainly isn’t a pleasant thing. Another possible effect of this potion is that its taker might have to suffer from never-ending hunger, your stomach growling no matter how much you’ve eaten.

3 Hate Potion

The Hate Potion sounds simple enough. It sounds like it would cause the drinker to hate its giver, but what it actually does is show the drinker’s worst habits and traits – the things that make them dislikeable.

This potion is used for wizards who go through unrequited love from another person and try to convince them to dislike them even more. While it isn’t guaranteed that the potion can make another person lose their feelings for the person they fancy, it does its best to hinder any kind of affectionate relationship with the onlooker. While Twilight Moonbeams sounds almost exactly the same as The Love Potion, what makes this potion special is that it’s invented and marketed through the WonderWitch line by Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes.

Fred and George Weasley’s small business of selling potions, merchandise, and magic candy to other wizards manufactures all kinds of wizarding wonders. The Twilight Moonbeams potion, colored red and wrapped in a nice bottle is appealing to most female wizards trying to get their favorite boy to fall in love with them.

1 Magi-Me-More

While it’s classified as a potion, Magi-Me-More is actually a pill! It’s a magical pill taken mostly by elderly wizards who have grown in their old age and lost their magic skills and powers over the years. What it does is allow wizards to slowly regain their power and concentration, something that many older wizards are constantly hoping for.

Many wizards who have taken the pill revealed that it can transfigure you to feeling like you’re your twenty-year-old wizarding self again. However, some side-effects of this medication are dizziness, vomiting, and tusks.
