With Halloween fast approaching, many movie fans are going to their favorite fall and horror faves. For many, that means returning to everyone’s favorite franchise about a boy wizard: Harry Potter. While the series focuses on witches and magic, it also has an element of the supernatural.

Ghosts are a common occurrence in the world of Harry Potter. They roam the halls of Hogwarts and are never really the ones to scare. If anything, they range from being helpful guides to minor annoyances. Though their relevance is fairly small, they are an essential part of the set-dressing of Hogwarts.

10 Headless Hunt

In ranking the ghosts of Hogwarts, the members of the headless hunt come in at the bottom. Though they have a larger role in the books, they are fairly absent in the films. Apart from a brief mention in Sorceror’s Stone and a quick appearance in Prisoner of Azkaban, the Headless Hunt is almost non-existent.

When they are, though, they seem fairly elitist. These ghosts refuse to allow entry to Nearly Headless Nick just because he isn’t fully headless. This practicality seems a bit over the top and shows that this band of the undead are more picky than scary.

9 Ghost of Gryffindor Tower

This ghost has a very brief appearance in the third installment of the Harry Potter films. After the Gryffindor students finish eating their first feast in the great hall, they gather together to head off to their dormitory.

On their way to their rooms, a ghost appears and walks in the opposite direction. Completely ignoring Dean Thomas, the ghost simply walks through him, leaving the student covered in ectoplasm. Not very considerate, eh?

8 Caroling Ghosts

These ghosts appear for a quick second in the Christmas sequence of Sorceror’s Stone. When Hermione is heading to the great hall to say goodbye for the Christmas holidays to Ron and Harry, the ghosts glide by. Donned in victorian garbs, they look to have jumped right out of A Christmas Carol.

While they offer that bit of spooky magic to the proceedings, their singing is more dreary than jolly. However, they still were impactful enough to make it onto the official soundtrack. Yes, really.

7 Fat Friar

This dude seems like he was quite the partier in his day. This ghost is the official ghost of Hufflepuff House. Now, why any of the houses need an “official ghost” is anyone’s guess, but he’s Hufflepuff’s. He only has one appearance in the series, and it is during the first feast at Hogwarts in the first film.

While he embodies the joyfulness and love of food that embodies Hufflepuff House, he could get pretty annoying assumingly. You would think if you had all of eternity ahead of you, you wouldn’t be half as raucous as he is.

6 The Bloody Baron

The Bloody Baron seems to be a bit more fun in the films than he ever is in the books. The official ghost of Slytherin House (seriously, what’s up with that?), The Bloody Baron is supposed to be one of the more fierce and terrifying ghosts at Hogwarts.

In fact, The Bloody Baron seems to be the only one who can keep Peeves the Poltergeist in line. The only individual at the school who Peeves will listen to must be one hell of a spirit.

5 Professor Binns

Harry Potter 10 Best Ghost Characters Ranked

Professor Binns is the only ghost in the school to actually hold a teaching post. As the story goes, Professor Binns fell asleep during a class and never woke up. When his ghost realized what happened, he just went on teaching as if nothing happened and has been continuing on ever since.

Now, he might as boring as one might expect from such a nonchalant story, but you have to admire his reaction to death. While most would probably freak out at such an occurrence, Binns just went on with his daily grind. Good on you, Binns.

4 The Grey Lady

The Grey Lady is the official ghost of Ravenclaw House, haunting the tower which holds the house’s dormitory. The daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, the Grey Lady was the keeper of her mother’s diadem. Lord Voldemort convinced her to reveal its whereabouts, which resulted in him turning it into one of his Horcruxes.

The Grey Lady certainly meant well and redeemed herself when she revealed its location to Harry, but, come on. Why did she reveal it in the first place? Oh well, at least everything turned out alright.

3 Moaning Myrtle

Okay, okay, perhaps Moaning Myrtle is a little annoying, but wouldn’t you be, too, if you were unexpectedly murdered at her age? Myrtle died due to the stare of the Basilisk when Voldemort first opened the Chamber of Secrets, condemning her to haunt the girl’s lavatory which houses the entrance.

While she is kind of annoying and even a bit creepy, one can’t help but pity her. She embodies all the tragic elements of a good ghost story and even turns out to be a bit helpful at times.

2 Peeves

Harry Potter 10 Best Ghost Characters Ranked

Many fans were upset to find Peeves absent from all eight Harry Potter films. While he is annoying and crude, he was an essential part of life in the castle (or lack thereof). In the books, Peeves is a nasty poltergeist who terrorizes students and teachers alike, dropping books and cauldrons on their heads and just making a plain old mess anywhere he goes.

Peeves actually almost made it into the films. Rik Mayall, a British actor and comedian, played and filmed scenes as Peeves. Sadly, Chris Columbus, the director of the first two films, decided to cut him from the movie entirely. While he certainly isn’t crucial to any of the story, it’s a shame this fan-favorite character never made it to the big screen.

1 Nearly Headless Nick

In hindsight, most of the ghosts in the films were either annoying, failures, or just irrelevant. One, though, that was helpful, brave, and sacrificial was Nearly Headless Nick, otherwise known as Sir Nicholas (if you don’t mind), Nearly Headless Nick got his name from his partially severed head.

Played by Monty Python member John Cleese, Nearly Headless Nick is the best ghost of the whole series. He provides the perfect amount of comic relief, is relevant to the plot, and is played by one of the greatest British comedians of all time. What’s not to love?
