A staple of every child’s home, Harry Potter is a tale that encourages good morals. It teaches the power of friendship, understanding, and good vs. evil. So close to the hearts of children—and may adults—Harry Potter has wisdom for the ages. It is the ultimate coming of age story, and that does require a lot of growing up. Harry goes through these trials and tribulations, but no one has more to learn than his best friend, Ron Weasley.

While there are many evil characters in the saga, he is not one of them. He does, however, have a lot to learn. In some instances, he comes out worse than he did in the beginning. Here are ten ways Ron gets worse and worse.

10 Oblivious

Ron Weasley is the epitome of your average teenage boy. In the series he spans from age 11-17 (not including epilogues) and fills this roll with gusto. Ron is typical to accept what is in front of him and oblivious to everything else. He lacks real emotional intelligence, even when it would benefit him to know better.

After Hermione first purchases her cat Crookshanks, Ron is immediately critical. He accuses Crookshanks of eating Scabbers, deliberately hurting Hermione’s feelings when he knows she has no control over the situation. This continues into their late teens during their hunt for the Horcruxes. He expects it to be smooth sailing in the quest to destroy evil and unaware of the realities of the situation.

9 Irresponsible

There is very little that Ron takes seriously. Though there are only so many things that can be held against him as a child, there are many decisions he makes that should be called into question. It is true that his devotion to Harry is deep, and may be one of the most profound relationships he has.

However, at twelve years old, Ron Weasley steals his father’s magical flying car to take to school. He and Harry missed the train and instead of telling Ron’s parents like any normal child would, Ron considers theft. And acts on it, knowing that this would get his father into trouble should they be spotted.

8 Unappreciative

A direct contrast to Harry’s upbringing, Ron does not seem to fully understand his privilege. The Weasley family is bountiful in children, though not necessarily wealth. Ron has a habit of resenting his family for this. He is embarrassed by his family’s abundance of children and cramped house.

Through Harry’s eyes, the Weasleys could not be richer. They have what he does not: family. Ron does not understand this and holds it against his family. Most of all, he does not appreciate his mother’s painstaking effort in knitting them all customized sweaters for Christmas.

7 Gluttonous

One of Ron’s main character traits is his appreciation for food. This is sometimes shown as comedic relief, in opposition to Harry’s confidence and Hermione’s earnestness. Ron is typically shown in the Great Hall, shoveling food into his mouth.

On occasion this has endangered his life. While alone in the dormitory one night, Ron found a box of cauldron cakes meant for Harry and subsequently ate them all himself. The gift giver, Romilda Vane, had spiked the box with love potion. While Ron was saved, he almost died in the process after drinking poisoned mead.

6 Selfish

Ron has difficulty seeing other people’s perspectives which makes him act in hurtful ways. One of his most egregious acts was abandoning Harry and Hermione in the middle of their search for Horcruxes.

While he was under the influence of a Horcrux at the time, it is no excuse. Horcruxes amplify what is already there. Ron’s rage and refusal to participate was something that had been building for a long time. He left his friends alone to face the dangers of being on their own, breaking Hermione’s heart in the process.

5 In Over His Head

Sometimes, Ron makes mistakes that only hurts himself. Many of his intentions are well placed, but he can take advantage if he’s not careful. Especially in schoolwork there are many times where he needs Hermione to intercede and write introductions for him.

His hotheadedness can push him over the edge and he often acts without thinking. Certainly, when Malfoy is involved, but even more so when Malfoy is insulting Hermione. Ron hurt himself the most when Malfoy slung a slur at Hermione. When trying to curse Malfoy, the spell rebounded and caused Ron to throw up slugs.

4 Jealous

Much of Ron’s spite can come out and hurt the ones he cares about the most. His emotions can be volatile and at times, it seems that Harry is the catalyst. Growing up in a household with six siblings, Ron is often overlooked.

Befriending Harry at times puts salt in that wound. When Harry became a champion for the Triwizard Tournament, Ron took his jealousy out on Harry. He didn’t believe that Harry didn’t put his own name in the Goblet of Fire and their friendship suffered for a brief time.

3 Lacks Empathy

As Hermione cleverly says in Order of the Phoenix Ron has “the emotional range of a teaspoon.” This response brings up many issues that Ron has through the course of the series. He has difficulty connecting and understanding people around him because of a surprising lack of empathy.

When Harry tells Ron and Hermione about kissing Cho, Ron has an entirely in character response which is not very understanding. Cho has suffered the murder of her boyfriend all while struggling with her feelings for Harry. She cries when they kiss. Ron dismisses these feelings outright.

2 Bad Boyfriend

Luckily, the audience was never subjected to watching Ron and Hermione date in earnest. The only evidence to Ron’s approach to dating is his relationship with Lavender Brown. There is no question about what a bad boyfriend he is.

While Lavender is admittedly quite annoying, that is no excuse for Ron’s treatment of her. He flagrantly uses her for his own purposes and doesn’t mind that it makes Hermione jealous. He mistreats both women in this scenario and in the end is rewarded. He gets rid of Lavender and ends up with Hermione.

1 Treatment Of Hermione

Ron’s greatest crime is of course how he treats Hermione. This starts when they are eleven, before they are even friends. He is completely tactless with his treatment of her, speaking loudly about her character flaws so she can hear him.

This continues through the series as they get into screaming matches. He punishes her for going to the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum and in the same breath refuses to admit that he likes her. This is rounded off in the last book when he abandons her in the middle of the forest, forcing her to choose between hunting Horcruxes with Harry and her feelings for Ron.
