The teachers at Hogwarts greatly impacted Harry Potter’s life, however this affect was not always good.

Harry Potter may be a famous wizard among his community, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he has it easy at Hogwarts. The Boy Who Lived has his fair share of good professors at the school, some of which go above and beyond in order to help him, yet also has to put up with some bad ones throughout his time at the castle as well.

We now take a look at those who we thought would be great to learn from, as well as those who we wouldn’t be…

10 Nice: Albus Dumbledore

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

Let’s start with the obvious. Albus Dumbledore is somebody capable of extraordinary things, being commonly regarded as one of the strongest wizards on the planet and the only person who Lord Voldemort fears. But, while his powers are significant, it’s nothing compared to his big heart.

Dumbledore always puts others before himself, encourages kindness and love, and helps mould Harry into the stellar human being he is. The Boy Who Lived didn’t have many parental figures in his life but the Hogwarts headmaster was certainly one of them. It was genuinely devastating when he was killed by Severus Snape in the Half-Blood Prince, both in the movie and the book.

9 The Worst: Severus Snape

Again, a rather obvious choice. Severus Snape was a good guy in the end, at least theoretically. While his sacrifices helped the Order of the Phoenix and Harry defeat Lord Voldemort, his personality left much to be desired.

Snape was nothing short of a bully during his time as both Potions Master and Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. He repeatedly picked on Neville Longbottom, shooting down the youngster’s confidence in the process. And he loved making life as torrid as possible for Harry, Ron, and Hermione – all while favoring his Slytherin students. He’s somebody we certainly wouldn’t want as our teacher…

8 Nice: Minerva McGonagall

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

All new students are petrified of Professor Minerva McGonagall when they first start out at Hogwarts due to her stern demeanor and insisted on discipline. But first impressions can sometimes be wrong and, over the course of the series, a softer side to her character is displayed.

McGonagall can be admittedly harsh, but she’s always fair. And the way she protects the students during Snape’s time as headmaster is admirable, particularly knowing the confidence. Harry is so fond of her he uses an Unforgivable Curse on Death Eater Amycus Carrow when he spits in her face in the Deathly Hallows book.

7 The Worst: Gilderoy Lockhart

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

If you care about your education – and you certainly should – then you want a teacher who knows there stuff. However, Gilderoy Lockhart doesn’t fall into that category, with the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher completely useless – usually relying on his students to sort tricky situations for him.

That’s bad but Lockhart also has a selfish and ruthless side to his personality as well. He takes credit for the work of others and, when Harry and Ron discover this and force him to enter the Chamber of Secrets against his will, he attempts to erase their memories, Fortunately for the duo, his attempt fails.

6 Nice: Remus Lupin

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

Harry could have been forgiven for entering his third year at Hogwarts feeling a bit nervous, particularly given the way his first two Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers had turned on him previously. However, those worries are immediately extinguished when he meets Remus Lupin on the train ride in.

Lupin is a parental figure in his life throughout the Prisoner of Azkaban and also helps Harry significantly in the years that follow their time at Hogwarts together. He’s a key player in the fight against Lord Voldemort and makes the Boy Who Lived the godfather of his child, Teddy Lupin, shortly before his death at the Battle of Hogwarts.

5 The Worst: Quirinus Quirrell

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

Quirinus Quirrell was Harry’s first Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher and seems friendly at first, introducing himself to the youngster in the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley. But, at the end of the Sorcerer’s Stone, it’s revealed that he’s actually working for Lord Voldemort.

Quirrell attempts to steal the stone for his master and comes close to succeeding. Harry is able to stop him just in time and the Hogwarts teacher is left to die, with Voldemort fleeing to save his own essence (not skin, given he’s without a body at this point in the series).

4 Nice: Rubeus Hagrid

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

Rubeus Hagrid isn’t actually a teacher at Hogwarts when he first appears in the Sorcerer’s Stone. However, Professor Merrythought’s decision to retire prompts Albus Dumbledore into giving him one, making him the veteran’s successor as Care of Magical Creatures expert.

Hagrid isn’t the best when it comes to educating people but he treats Harry, Ron, and Hermione with nothing but warmth and kindness. He’s willing to do anything to help the young students, even when they make life difficult for himself, and he’s one of the nicest characters in the entire franchise, never mind just at Hogwarts.

3 The Worst: Barty Crouch Jr

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

Barty Crouch Jr is actually a pretty good teacher, especially when you consider that he’s merely masquerading as one. The Death Eater takes on the persona of Alastor Mad-Eye Moody in the Goblet of Fire and imparts a great deal of wisdom on his pupils, even giving Harry the idea of becoming a auror.

Yet all his nice work is undone towards the end of the book and movie. His dastardly plot is discovered and Crouch Jr attempts to kill Harry, having previously murdered his own father while undercover. He’s stopped just in time and his soul is ultimately sucked from his body by the Dementors of Azkaban – a scene that didn’t make it into the movie.

2 Nice: Pomona Sprout

Harry Potter 5 Nicest Teachers (& 5 Who Were The Worst)

Filicus Flitwick deserves an honorable mention here, always treating Harry and his fellow students well while also fighting against Lord Voldemort. But we’ve opted to go for Herbology professor Pomona Sprout instead.

Sprout is brilliant at what she does and helps create the potion needed to bring the petrified back to life in the Chamber of Secrets. She also fights in the Battle of Hogwarts and protects the students during Lord Voldemort’s bloodthirsty reign of control so, while she isn’t in the movies much, she’s deserving on a place on this list.

1 The Worst: Dolores Umbridge

Don’t get us wrong, Snape was vile. But he looks positively lovely when compared to Dolores Umbridge who, without a doubt, is the worst of the bunch.

Umbridge joins in Harry’s fifth year and she spends her whole time at the castle making his life a misery. She dismisses his story of Cedric Diggory’s death, is rude and insulting to everybody with the exception of Argus Filch, and takes things like Quidditch out of Harry’s life. It’s great when she leaves the castle – and even better when Harry defeats her at the Ministry of Magic two years later.
