Fans of the series were excited for major announcements on The Last of Us Day 2021. Updates on DLC or multiplayer content were highly anticipated, unfortunately none of that happened. What we got was a line of merchandise and a weekly photo mode challenge. Though there was one update about the multiplayer mode; it was that there’s no update.
The Last of Us Day went by without making a major show of things, however, in a wrap up blog post developer Naughty Dog spoke about the journey that started with the first game. It later went on to thank fans for their love and support over the years. It concluded with a small update on what the studio is currently doing with The Last of Us.
Naughty Dog initially planned to create a new evolution of the original Factions mode from TLOU, however, the developer noted that “the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single player campaign.” As a result, we will be getting a multiplayer experience, but it will not be in the form of an addition to TLOU2. “When and where it will be realised is still to be determined.”
While that’s the only update we’ve got, the studio is currently recruiting for multiplayer related positions and will reveal something in due time. “We’ve been busy growing our team inside the kennel since The Last of Us Part II launched and are currently in full swing of hiring for MP-related positions (hint hint),” said the blog post in a less than subtle manner.
While that’s pretty much it for the video game side of things, we did get a look at Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie from HBO’s The Last of Us TV series. The two looked like they were picked right out of the game, as their clothing and makeup was almost identical to their video game counterparts. Unfortunately, Joel and Ellie are facing away from the camera and looking at a plane crash in the distance, so we didn’t quite get a look at their faces as of yet.
