Harry Potter: 5 Reasons Hogwarts Needs Slytherin (& 5 The House Should Be Eliminated)

With a reputation as the ‘evil’ house of the Harry Potter world, should Hogwarts simply get rid of Slytherin once and for all?

The Harry Potter franchise is one of the biggest phenomena on the planet, with an incredible following coming from both the wonderful books and fantastic films. The franchise’s status in the pop culture zeitgeist has a lot to do with the quality, of course, but also the iconography of it, such as wands, Harry, and Voldemort, as well as the Hogwarts houses.

One such house is Slytherin, a misunderstood house always portrayed as the bad guy in the content fans get, aiding in the creation of an argument that the house is unnecessary and should get eliminated, but that is something many Slytherin take issue with and counter.

10 Needed – Not All Bad

The most basic counterargument to the point of eliminating Slytherin is that there is a misconception that all Slytherin are bad people, that everyone sorted to the house is evil.

This is frustratingly untrue, with numerous examples of brave, heroic, and genuinely good Slytherins. Even in the movies, people like Slughorn and Snape, while problematic, prove the potential good of Slytherin, nevermind the wider lore with many a great Witch and Wizard from the house.

9 Eliminated – Most Dark Wizards

But, that argument goes hand in hand with the base level complaint about Slytherin, and one that is pointed out numerous times throughout the lore, Slytherin is the house of the most Dark Wizards.

Hufflepuff does not tend to produce many Dark Wizards, with Ravenclaw and Gryffindor providing their share, but not compared to the amount Slytherin does. Many see eliminating the house as an easy way to eradicate this issue.

8 Needed – Where Would The Ambitious & Cunning Go?

Like all four of the Hogwarts houses, Slytherin has a specific set of ideas, traits, and qualities that suit them to the house, and it is these that are the reason so many fans associate themselves with the house.

Where would the students of Hogwarts go who fit this mold? The ambitious, cunning, and shrewd (with many other good and bad traits) will have nowhere to go, they do not fit the other houses like the fair, just, and loyal Hufflepuff, the daring, courageous Gryffindor, or the wise, creative, and intelligent Ravenclaw.

7 Eliminated – Voldemort

There is no doubting Voldemort’s status as the evilest Wizard to have ever lived, and a truly cruel, disgusting individual who could have very well brought the Wizarding World crumbling down.

Before he took up the mantle of Lord Voldemort, he was, of course, Tom Marvolo Riddle, a Slytherin student at Hogwarts who gave the appearance of a model student. He tarnished the Slytherin name alongside many of his Death Eaters, and many believe the house from which he came should not remain.

6 Needed – Rich History

On the other side of that argument, though, Voldemort is not the entire history of Slytherin, and the house should not fall just due to his actions.

There is a long, rich history to every Hogwarts house, dating back to their creators and the four founders of Hogwarts, to eliminate that house, and that history, due to Voldemort, or a tendency to birth evil Wizards may not be the best course of action.

5 Eliminated – Salazar Slytherin

Going back to the founders of Hogwarts, the four houses and the school itself were created by Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff, and Salazar Slytherin, with the latter being a less than an admirable figure.

His hatred and mistrust of non-pure blood Wizards led to him not just to leave the school forever after the other founders disagreed with his idea not to allow Muggle-borns into the school, but also to create the Chamber of Secrets, placing a Basilisk there to purge the school of the ‘unworthy,’ he is hardly a historical figure whose legacy should get respected with a house.

4 Needed – Reform Would Be More Understandable

As mentioned before, totally and completely eliminating one singular house from existence seems a bit rash and unintelligent, so perhaps reform is the better route to go down.

Renaming the house, somehow trying to eradicate some of the traits that lead the house towards providing more Dark Wizards, altering some of the crueler beliefs of the house, any of these options, as well as others, would work better than elimination.

3 Eliminated – The Abolishment Of The House System

However, while eliminating one individual house may not be a good course of action to pursue, totally abolishing the house system as it is an option to consider.

Many fans have called for this for years, with the idea of boxing students into one particular house at a specific time in their life may not be healthy or productive. Pitting groups of students against each other because one is brave, another is hard working, a third is smart, and a fourth is ambitious may not be the best way for a school to get run.

2 Needed – Removing The House Does Not Remove The People

Perhaps the most logical and sensical argument as to why the house of Slytherin should not get eliminated from Hogwarts is due to the fact that if the house goes, the people still remain.

The students who would have gotten sorted into Slytherin will just get spread into other houses; they probably do not fit into well, meaning Hufflepuff could get overloaded with in-between students. A new fourth house may act as the home for would-be Slytherin’s, but if that were to happen, what is the point of eliminating the house in the first place?

1 Eliminated – The Pure Blood Obsession

It is entirely unfair to generalize every student of every house as being one thing or another, to mistreat a Gryffindor for a stereotypical desire to be a hero or a Hufflepuff for the generalization of seeing them as pushovers.

However, the idea of Slytherin rests on the notion of pure-blood superiority and is a crucial obsession of every evil Wizard to come out of the house, including Voldemort, and its founder Salazar Slytherin. Getting rid of Slytherin is a short-term solution to getting rid of this obsession by separating all these students who have a seed of this belief ready to grow.
