Succession is one of HBO’s popular shows. Ever since its release in 2018, fans and new watchers alike have been reeling over the shows ‘dramedy’ interpretation of the filthy rich. This is further explored through the audience’s journey with the show’s main characters.

Succession’s characters are varied and hence complicated to understand. The actors who play these characters are more intriguing themselves with years of acting experience. Hence for fans and viewers of the show, here are things they may not know about the Succession cast members.

10 J. Smith-Cameron

J. Smith-Cameron plays the role of Gerri on Succession. She serves as the legal consultant and assistant to the Roy family and though not considered as ‘main cast’ has been front and center of the Roy family drama. Smith- Cameron also has extensive acting experience and what viewers may not know about her and her character, is that the role of Gerri was originally written for a man. Of the experience, Smith- Cameron said she had ‘isolated scenes’ to work on her character of Gerri and ‘used her feminine instinct to fill in the blanks’. Thankfully the creators went with Smith-Cameron as fans have grown to love Gerri.

9 Natalie Gold

One actress worth mentioning is Natalie Gold and her portrayal of Rava Roy in Succession. Natalie Gold’s performance like many of the female characters is powerful in that it provides the audience a glimpse into her ex-husband Kendall’s past life. What fans may not know is that Gold is also a TV veteran having guest-starred the first season of CBS’s The Good Wife in S1 EP 7 “Unorthodox”. Viewers can revisit the moment Gold plays a very different character to see the actress’ transformation and range.

8 Hiam Abbass

Hiam Abbass is one of the show’s most powerful characters in the role of Marcia Roy. Abbass’s presence in the show is subtle yet so powerful as audiences come to discover bits and pieces of Marcia’s personality. As well as being a recurring character on Succession, Hiam Abbass is also a series regular on the Hulu produced show ‘Ramy’. In there she plays the mother of Ramy Youseff, a young Muslim American man working his way through life and faith.

What audiences may not know about the actor is that due to her Palestinian upbringing, she is fluent in french. Fans may have noticed this in some scenes of Succession where the actor would drop some french sentences here and there. Abbass has actually starred in both French and Quebecois film productions and was selected as a jury for the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

7 Alan Ruck

Connor Roy in Succession has become the epitome of the ‘out of touch wealthy person’. Throughout the series, viewers are exposed to Connor’s nonchalant attitude to his wealth and how he is ‘ handed everything’. Audiences should note, however, that Alan Ruck has had a very different upbringing to his character. In an interview, he revealed that he never had the privilege ‘to pick and choose’ as an actor and has worked his way up to his role as Connor. Nevertheless, he said that the role of Connor during a time where he was focusing on being with his family and had already planned to take his son to soccer practice on the day of the auditions. Ruck decided to forgo the audition, but thankfully, producer Adam Mckay was able to see him on a whim and luckily cast him as Connor that day.

6 Brian Cox

Scottish actor Brian Cox plays the monster-like character, Logan Roy. Cox’s performance which both frightens and excites audiences, is indicative of Cox’s long-standing acting skills and experience. Whilst his character is often evil on the show, Cox is actually a regular nice guy with a very easy-going attitude.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert, the actor admitted to being the complete opposite of his character Logan Roy and recognizes that people like Logan are the real problems in our society. In another interview with James Corden earlier this year, Brian Cox also revealed that he had actually contracted Covid-19 before it was declared a global pandemic and thankfully only exhibited mild ‘allergy’ symptoms.

5 Matthew MacFadyen

Matthew MacFadyen is who plays Tom Wambsgans in the series, is not an unfamiliar face in Hollywood. Audiences may recognize MacFadyen from his most iconic role as Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice and as Frank Oz in Death At A Funeral. MacFadyen was also a series regular on the British spy drama Spooks, where it was revealed he is actually allergic to cats. Thankfully, the only animal MacFadyen has been exposed to on Succession are the boars which make him safe for now.

4 Nicholas Braun

Just like his character Greg, Nicholas Braun is also in awe of the success of HBO’s Succession. Despite being an actor for 20 years, Braun admitted in multiple interviews that he is most like his character Greg, especially as he is now invited to more Hollywood parties, meeting more famous and important people. However, some observant fans may have noticed that Braun, like many young actors, started on the Disney channel specifically in Sky High and The Princess Protection Program. Viewers can still catch an almost unaged and uncanny Braun in these productions on Disney+.

3 Sarah Snook

The exquisite Sarah Snook is one of the show’s pleasant surprises. The Australian actress also has over 10 years of experience in the industry and plays the headstrong youngest child of the Roy patriarch, Siobhan Roy.

Snook also has extensive stage experience in Australia and fans would be pleased to know that the actress was trained at Australia’s most prestigious drama school the National Institute Of Dramatic Arts (NIDA). Unlike most schools, NIDA holds a very limited amount of spaces for acting students which makes Snook’s acceptance and attendance at the institution more noteworthy.

2 Kieran Culkin

Kieran Culkin is one of Succession’s most entertaining characters. His character Roman Roy is the sharp and witty middle child which audiences have come to love. Unlike his character, Culkin is not so careless with what he says but is considered to be the funniest person by his own cast members. Kieran also started in Home Alone alongside his brother Macaulay Culkin. What audiences may have missed about Culkin is that his breakout role was in the 2002 film Igby Goes Down, where he played the pessimist 17-year-old, Jason. Culkin was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actor category for the role of Roman Roy; a nice prerequisite to his Emmy Nomination for Succession.

1 Jeremy Strong

Jeremy Strong has already won a Primetime Emmy for his lead role as Kendall Roy in Succession. The actor, who stunned everyone with his stellar but heart wrenching S2 performance, has also got considerable acting experience on his belt. In fact, audiences may not know of Strong’s stage acting experience, most notably off-broadway. What is most interesting about the actor is that since marrying his Danish wife Emma, he has allegedly taken primary residence in Copenhagen. This means that Strong and his character Kendall do have one thing in common: their well-travelled and experienced lives.
