The upcoming The Last of Us television adaptation has added a new cast member to its roster to play an original character with no previous connection to the video game. After two failed attempts from the game’s own developer, Naughty Dog, to develop a film adaptation, a television series based on the game was announced to be in development in March 2020 at HBO Max. Being written by strong fans of the video games, the series is reported to remain faithful to the story of the first game with certain changes that will keep fans interested and surprised with the writing.

GamesRadar+ now reports that the series has silently added a new cast member to its lineup who is playing a seemingly brand new character. In an interview with AListProductions on YouTube, Friday Night Lights alum Brad Leland confirmed that he had finished filming some scenes in Canada for the HBO series. Whilst there has been no official confirmation from the production itself, IMDb has listed Leland as playing a character named “Mr. Adler”. Twitter user @TheLastofUsNews has also researched various casting calls from the show, noting various calls for teachers and schoolchildren, possibly alluding to Leland’s character being a teacher.

Fans of the games will know that a teacher character has never been included within the story. Therefore, Leland’s inclusion as Mr. Adler only further emphasizes the differences that the series will have from the games, an aspect of the show’s development that has previously been pointed out by series co-creator, Craig Mazin. Fans will only have to wait and see how different the series truly is once The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and Gabriel Luna, arrives in 2022.
