Eco Lifestyle is the latest expansion for The Sims 4 and allows players to truly control their world. While the main intention of the pack is to provide players with the means to live a green lifestyle, you can also choose to destroy the world instead. However, some prominent Simmers, including Plumbella, have discovered that causing a world to turn industrial isn’t as easy as they expected.

I decided to try it for myself and realized that while turning the ecosystem green is definitely easier than causing clouds of smog to descend, it’s also not as difficult as it first appears — once you’ve discovered how the system works.

Ecosystem Mechanics

The ecosystem mechanics operate in every residential world except Strangerville, but you’ll realize that some are easier to turn industrial than others. This is because they are based on several features and some worlds naturally make these easier to change than others.

Filling lots with pollution creating items will eventually turn a world industrial and this was the first way I tried. However, I quickly discovered that there are better and easier ways to affect the eco-footprint. You can, of course, turn testingcheats on and then instantly adjust the ecosystem using the cheat Eco_Footprint.Set_Eco_Footprint_State 2. However, if you want to do it through gameplay or a storyline then there are some things you’ll need to be aware of.

The game seems to prioritize affecting the footprint through play rather than messy looking hacks, and actually puts a lot of weight on other items outside of obvious pollution causing items such as fireplaces. While these do affect your environment, building materials and the amount of power and water consumed by your household also make a huge difference. You’ll also want to make sure to stop any neighborhood action plans that focus on water or power conservation or any form of environment upgrade, such as the green initiatives and modernization plans in Evergreen Harbor. This will make your task much easier.

Building With The Right Materials

The first thing to do is enter the lot you want to change and go into build mode. Here you can make some quick and easy changes that will help you adjust the area’s footprint very fast.

Firstly, you need to check the building materials used on the lot. While many different styles of walls and flooring have no footprint effects, some have either green or industrial values to them. Concrete has several industrial options which you’d expect but there are also some plainer wall patterns, a striped floor option and even some tiles that also contain industrial effects. If these don’t fit the look you want then even just swapping from a green benefit to an item with zero benefits will help.

Some Eco Lifestyle items also contain green boosts. While you’d expect a boost from green power generating items, some doors, and other random items also offer bill reduction and eco-friendly buffs, so pay attention to these.

Power And Water

After you’ve adjusted the building materials on a lot, or in your build if you’re starting from scratch, the next thing to check is power and water. While turbines, solar panels, and dew collectors offer green boosts, the generators and water purifying machines give negative effects by default.

You’ll also notice that sinks, toilets, showers, baths, and hot tubs all have different water consumption values and electronic items consume differing amounts of power. By using items that will mean your household uses a large amount of power and water you’ll also increase your footprint. The pollution from machines attempting to offset this extra usage will also contribute as will leaving your lights on permanently.

The game is encouraging everyday changes and as such everyday changes appear to have the most effect. By doing the things above I found I could turn a household industrial in just a few sim days. I repeated this in other houses so that every lot was either neutral or industrial. Then it was just a case of playing a few more days and waiting.

Here Comes The Smog

If you click the eco icon by your clock you’ll see the footprint of the neighborhood adjusting as you play. To turn the neighborhood industrial you simply need to wait until the yellow bar has decreased enough so that the lighter color touches the far right of the industrial side of the graph.

As long as you are causing more issues than you are preventing, this will continue to change and the yellow arrow will show this. It just takes time. However, I managed to adjust my houses and smog up Evergreen Harbor in just a few sim weeks, once I figured out the system.

When smog descends the air becomes cloudier, sims will frequently cough, and you can also get bouts of acid rain. The effects are sometimes more noticeable, depending on the world you smogged up, and do also show increases in the trash on the sidewalks and other areas.

Aesthetics And Extras

If you want to alter your world to truly look like trash then debug mode and the live edit objects cheat will give you access to several items that will affect your world’s aesthetics.

A range of trash items can be found in debug, and these look great alongside dumpsters and trash plants. You can also use trees from debug mode so they won’t increase your green footprint. The dead vines and leafless options from Vampires are especially good for this.

For those who use mods, TwistedMexi’s T.O.O.L mod will give you even more options as it allows you to place items anywhere in the world, meaning extra trash and dumpsters can be placed anywhere you like.
