How To Build Yuna From Final Fantasy X In Dungeons & Dragons

Final Fantasy VII is commonly believed to be the most popular game in the series, but that’s not the case in Japan, where the fans prefer Final Fantasy X. One of the reasons for this love is Yuna and her companions, which involves a tale about escaping one’s destiny and defying fate, in order to live the life you choose. It’s possible to create Yuna as a character in Dungeons & Dragons, as her powers are shared with several classes from the game.

Yuna is one of the summoners of Spira, which is a world that is besieged every few years by a colossal titan named Sin, with the power to devastate the land and massacre entire cities. The only way to stop Sin is to temporarily destroy it, which involves a pilgrimage to the city of Zanarkand. Summoners from around Spira go on a journey to reach Zanarkand, but only one needs to give their life and perform the summon that calls on the Final Aeon, which will kill Sin for a few years. Tidus might be the main character of Final Fantasy X, but it’s really Yuna and her journey that are the stars of the show, which is likely why she became the protagonist in the sequel.

Creating Yuna As A D&D Character

Yuna’s Ability Scores, Class, And Background

The version of Yuna we have created uses material from the Player’s Handbook and an Unearthed Arcana article that can be found here. Yuna is a human (non-variant) cleric who takes on the Unity Domain at level 1. Using the basic stat spread listed on page 13 of the Player’s Handbook and taking her race into consideration, Yuna’s starting stats would be STR 9, DEX 11, CON 14, INT 13, WIS 16, and CHA 15.

One of the key aspects of Yuna’s backstory is her lineage, as she is related to the man who stopped Sin during the previous cycle. Yuna is also expected to sacrifice herself at the end of her pilgrimage by calling on the Final Aeon. Yuna is treated as a hero (almost) everywhere she goes, which is why we have given her the Folk Hero background. Her starting skills would be Animal Handling, Insight, Religion, and Survival. If the variant Feat rules are used, then Yuna would benefit from Healer, Inspiring Leader, Spell Sniper, and War Caster.

Yuna’s alignment would be Lawful Good. She works hard to be the hero that people need and does her best not to show fear or weakness in the face of evil. Yuna goes on a globe-trotting pilgrimage that is going to end with her sacrificing her life to save the world, which is about as Lawful Good an act as you can perform. Yuna starts to have doubts over the course of the story and she lightens up a great deal in Final Fantasy X-2, but that’s a story progression that’s linked to Final Fantasy X and it might not apply to a D&D campaign.

Yuna’s Spells And Roleplay

In Final Fantasy X, Yuna’s path of the Sphere Grid uses spells that are associated with the White Mage job from other Final Fantasy games, giving her access to healing and buffing spells. Yuna also has the unique ability to summon Aeons to the battlefield. This can be accommodated by the cleric spell list, and hers would include spells like guidance, mending, resistance, spare the dying, bless, cure wounds, healing word, shield of faith, aid, enhance ability, lesser restoration, prayer of healing, protection from poison, beacon of hope, dispel magic, mass healing word, remove curse, revivify, spirit guardians, banishment, death ward, guardian of faith, greater restoration, hallow, mass cure wounds, planar binding, raise dead, heal, heroes’ feast, planar ally, conjure celestial, regenerate, resurrection, holy aura, gate, mass heal, and true resurrection.



Yuna’s character is shaped by her duty and destiny. Sin is an apocalyptic threat to the world of Spira and she witnesses first hand the carnage it causes, as well as the loss of countless lives caused while it still exists. Yuna’s hero journey is about knowing that she has to give her life to save the world but starts to develop bonds of friendship among her companions, and begins to learn the truth about the dark secret of her world. It can be tricky to transplant this story idea into Dungeons & Dragons, but it’s possible. There might be an ancient evil who is about to break from its ancient bonds (such as Tharizdun from Oerth) and only an epic-level spell can bind the seal around it. The only problem is that the caster needs to sacrifice themself to perform the spell, in such a way that they cannot be revived or wished back afterward. Yuna could become an adventurer in order to gain the strength necessary to cast the spell and save the world. On the way, she could start to have doubts about her duty, especially if she came from a sheltered upbringing and has started to find friendship and fall in love. A possible post-campaign adventure could involve the party joining Yuna on her final mission, and maybe find a way to finish it without the loss of her life.
