Is Elden Ring Delayed Because of George R R Martin

It’s been over a year since Elden Ring has gotten any tangible update from developer FromSoftware or publisher Bandai Namco. The hotly anticipated title, from Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki and Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, appears to be stuck in development limbo. Is the COVID-19 pandemic responsible, or is it something else entirely? The latest news on Martin may give fans their answer.

George R. R. Martin is best known for writing the high fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, the books on which the popular Game of Thrones TV series was based on. The author has taken his time finishing up the series, repeatedly blaming his work on the show or other outside circumstances for the delays. When Game of Thrones first started on HBO, Martin voiced concerns that the show’s narrative would overtake his books but tried reassuring fans that it was unlikely. But Game of Thrones came and went, finishing up after eight seasons with a controversial finale, and Martin failed to not only finish up the series but also the next book, The Winds of Winter.

Now, as news regarding Elden Ring remains stagnant, Martin has announced that he’s hard at work on The Winds of Winter (again) and swears that he’s really going to finish it this time. There’s plenty of reasons for fans to be skeptical, since Martin has made this claim before, but it’s still enough to excite loyal members of his fanbase, who have been anxiously awaiting the next book in the series since A Dance With Dragons was published in 2011.

Is George R. R. Martin Delaying Elden Ring?

So now, with George R. R. Martin hard at work on The Winds of Winter, do people finally have an answer for why Elden Ring keeps getting postponed? After all, the author is notorious for writing delays, and Martin has admitted to having a hard time juggling multiple projects. It’s certainly plausible, unless you consider that Martin most likely hashed out ideas for the game with the developers years ago, probably long before the public even knew of the game’s existence. If that’s the case, then Martin’s work on The Winds of Winter and Elden Ring are completely unrelated. But if Elden Ring’s delays are due to story changes, then all bets are off.

It’s unrealistic to assume Martin didn’t begin writing Elden Ring until after it was announced. That’s not how video games work. What’s more possible, however, is that Elden Ring’s story may have needed updates and revisions at some point in the development process. That’s completely plausible, especially when rewrites and long developmental periods on AAA titles like Final Fantasy XV and The Last of Us: Part 2 are now commonplace. If that’s the case, then it’s totally possible Martin is simply too busy writing The Winds of Winter to work on Elden Ring’s story revisions, and that’s what could be causing the game’s delay.

Whether George R. R. Martin is actually responsible for Elden Ring’s delays remains to be seen. True reasons for developmental struggles are often never revealed until after a game is released, if they ever are at all. In the meantime, Martin’s loyal readers will be at peace knowing The Winds of Winter should be finished up sometime soon… hopefully.
