Life Is Strange: True Colors is a self-contained adventure. The game introduces a new batch of characters and is set in a completely different place. Therefore, you don’t need to have played the previous games to understand or appreciate what’s happening. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t benefits to being a loyal Life Is Strange fan.

There are several things in the game that you’ll only notice if you’re familiar with the earlier installments. None of these things are vital to enjoying the True Colors’ adventure, but they enhance the experience a little bit. Here are the most notable ones.

7 The Return Of Hawt Dog Man

Even before True Colors was officially released, it was revealed that Hawt Dog Man was going to be in the game. Fans of the series rejoiced upon the realization that he was back, while newcomers were left confused. And once they finish True Colors, they’ll be even more puzzled about why people care about the little hot dog as he plays no part in the story.

He never has carried plot importance. Instead, he serves as the mascot of the series, appearing in random places in the games. During Alex Chen’s adventure, he is on a t-shirt like usual, and the little guy can also be seen on Steph’s drumkit in Chapter One.

6 Inclusion Of The Eye Of Providence

The Eye of Providence is a symbol that commonly appears in the Life Is Strange series. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that the infamous triangle is also in Haven Springs. Someone has drawn it on a door down near the mines.

True Colors never identifies the person who drew the image, but fans have their theories. Many accuse fan-favorite Chloe Price of putting the symbol on the door, and they believe it serves as a clue that the blue-haired heroine has visited Haven before. Chloe is the main suspect because she has a history of drawing the Eye of Providence. However, it’s more likely that there’s no canon culprit for the graffiti, and it’s just a nod to the rest of the series.

5 Sweater Referencing Sean And Daniel

Additional clothing packs were included in the special editions of True Colors. And one of them features outfits from the previous games. However, the title has another item of clothing that seems to reference Life Is Strange 2 but isn’t a part of the DLC. It’s a sweater with an image of two wolves howling together on it.

Fans of the series will remember that the animals were a big part of LiS2. Sean and Daniel even referred to themselves as wolves multiple times and howled together on occasion. While it can’t be 100 percent confirmed, it certainly seems like the sweater is referencing the two Diaz brothers.

4 Another Five-Part Story

The earlier Life Is Strange games were some of the greatest episodic titles ever. While True Colors changed things by ditching the typical model and releasing as one whole package, it didn’t change how the developers told the story because they still split it into parts.

Instead of episodes, they’re called chapters, and there are five of them. The number is significant because the original game was five episodes long, and Life is Strange 2 was the same. So, other than the two side stories – Before The Storm and The Adventures of Captain Spirit – Life Is Strange tales are generally told in five parts. True Colors isn’t too different, after all.

3 Reference To Firewalk

Throughout True Colors, Alex makes many visits to Steph’s record store. As you’d expect with that sort of store, the walls are covered in posters of various bands. Among them is a band called Firewalk, which players of the previous games might remember.

In the opening scenes of Before The Storm, Chloe talked her way into a Firewalk concert. And you actually got to listen to the rock band play while watching the beginnings of Chloe’s friendship with Rachel Amber. Steph actually had a big crush on Rachel back in her Blackwell days, so perhaps she originally got into the band to impress her. Yet, a musical expert like Steph probably knew about them before Rachel.

2 Steph’s Love For Roleplay Isn’t New

True Colors is not an incredibly long game, but the developers still managed to fit in an entire chapter dedicated to a LARP (live-action roleplay). During the event, Alex and Ethan travel around a fantasy version of Haven. The hero and the bard explore, collect scrolls, and defeat monsters. The whole experience is put together by Steph as she tries to cheer Ethan up and introduce Alex to the world of roleplay.

It isn’t the first time Steph has created a roleplaying adventure for a Life Is Strange protagonist. In her most memorable moment in Before The Storm, she was the dungeon master for a tabletop game. The beanie-wearing badass even invited Chloe to be a part of the fun. The LARP serves as a nice reminder of that classic scene.

1 The Death Of A Loved One Drives The Plot… Again

Gabe’s unfortunate death at the end of True Color’s first chapter is what truly sets the story in motion. For the rest of the game, Alex’s main goal is to bring down the people at fault for her brother’s demise. If you’ve played the previous games, you wouldn’t be too surprised that the death of a loved one is what drives the plot.

In the original title, Chloe’s constant deaths are a big part of the main narrative. Sean and Daniel’s adventure only begins in Life Is Strange 2 once their father is shot dead. As for Before The Storm and Captain Spirit, the major losses occur prior to the events of the game. Yet, the passing of Chloe’s dad and Chris’s mom still play a significant role in the protagonist’s arcs.
