10 GOODFELLAS (1990) – $46,879,633 WORLDWIDE

Martin Scorsese’s 1990 mob masterpiece Goodfellas has stood the test of time for the past thirty years and is still talked about as one of Scorsese’s finest as well as one of the best movies of the 90s and the mob/crime genre. With fantastic craftsmanship, brilliant performances, and a beautifully raw script, it is easy to see why.

Upon its debut at the Venice Film Festival, the film won Scorsese the Silver Lion Award for the best director before its domestic theatrical run, which kicked off with a $6,368,901 opening weekend and ended up with a $46,836,214 domestic total. The total gross increased both in 2008 and 2017 with two rereleases in the UK and France, taking the films worldwide total to $46,879,633 from a $25,000,000 budget.

9 THE COLOR OF MONEY (1986) – $52,293,982 WORLDWIDE

The oldest of Scorsese’s film to appear on this list, The Color Of Money may not be as revered as The Hustlers, but still churns out some great direction from Scorsese as well as two great performances from Paul Newman and Tom Cruise.

The film may not match Goodfellas in quality but it does outdo it at the box office, earning a $6,357,877 opening weekend on its way to grossing a total of $52,293,982 domestically, which ended up being its worldwide total. That’s just under a $50,000,000 profit from the $13,800,000 budget.

8 CASINO (1995) – $116,112,375 WORLDWIDE

The reunion of Pesci, De Niro, and Scorsese in Casino saw the director earn his second of two 90s films that earned over $100,000,000 at the box office. 7 CAPE FEAR (1991) – $182,291,969 WORLDWIDE

Scorsese’s remake of the classic Cape Fear was the first film of his career to gross over $100,000,000. De Niro is as fantastic as he is fear-inducing and it is overall a good flick, even if it does not live up to the high standards the 1962 version set.

The film’s opening weekend earned $10,261,025 at the box office, eventually accumulating to a $79,091,969 domestic total before doing over $20,000,000 better internationally. That made for a gross of $103,200,000, which brought the worldwide total $182,291,969 from its $35,000,000 budget.

6 HUGO (2011) – $185,770,160 WORLDWIDE

Perhaps not the first film that springs to mind when Martin Scorsese is mentioned, nonetheless Hugo was a fantastic fantasy. It earned the most Oscar nominations in 2012 with eleven, winning five of them. While it is not the director’s usual type of film, it was brilliantly made.

The film opened in November of 2011 with a weekend total of $11,364,505, which led to a domestic gross of $73,864,507. Internationally, the film raked in a total of $111,905,653 to make the worldwide total of $185,770,160, though that’s only a $35,000,000 profit from the $150,000,000 budget.

5 GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002) – $193,772,504 WORLDWIDE

Despite its dragging middle section and sometimes muddled narrative, Gangs Of New York offers Daniel Day-Lewis at his best with good direction and great production with a deep supporting cast. It made a decent bit of money.

Opening weekend saw the film rake in $9,100,00 on its way to a domestic gross of $77,812,000. The film rolled out internationally from 2002-2003, earning $115,960,504 for the Scorsese epic, making the total shy of $200,000,000 with $193,772,504 – a $93,772,504 profit from its $100,000,000 budget.

4 THE AVIATOR (2004) – $213,719,942 WORLDWIDE

Scorsese presents a great biopic of famous filmmaker and aviator Howard Hughes in The Aviator. The combination of Scorsese’s direction with DiCaprio’s great performance is what makes this film great, as is the effect the pair usually has on movies they collaborate on.

Initially, the movie only had a limited release earning $858,021 before a wide release for it saw the opening weekend at over $8,600,000, on its way to a domestic total of $102,610,330. This coincided with the film’s international release, which saw it gain a further $111,109,612 that took its total to $213,719,942 on a budget of $110,000,000.

3 THE DEPARTED (2006) – $291,465,034 WORLDWIDE

Scorsese’s Oscar-winning crime thriller The Departed was a fantastic effort by him and by the excellent cast. The film was a hit both with critics and audiences, with everything in the movie just coming together to create a brilliant crime film. The cast all deliver their parts brilliantly.

With a $90,000,000 budget, the film managed an opening weekend of $26,887,467, leading to a domestic total of $132,384,315. Internationally, the film earned $159,080,719, bringing the worldwide total for the Best Picture winner up to $291,465,034.

2 SHUTTER ISLAND (2010) – $294,804,195 WORLDWIDE

Scorcese presented audiences with a mystery thriller in Shutter Island that, despite being overly long, features good performances and a very well constructed mystery that appeals to audiences, especially in the climax.

The film did well in its opening weekend, earning $41,062,440 – over half of its $80,000,000 budget. Domestically, the film went on to gross a total of $128,012,934, whereas internationally the film earned $166,791,261, taking its worldwide total to $294,804,195.

1 THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013) – $392,000,694 WORLDWIDE

How fitting is it that this is Scorsese’s highest-grossing picture? Stylish and hilarious, brilliantly acted and directed, The Wolf Of Wall Street earned quite a bit of money for both DiCaprio and Scorsese. The film has a great cast of characters and performances, as well as a great script that, despite its three-hour runtime, never drags or slows down until the very end. It is a fantastic film and earned its way to top spot here.

From a $100,000,000 budget, the film opened up with an $18,361,578 weekend before grossing $116,900,694 domestically, which was more than doubled by its international earnings of $275,100,000. That took its worldwide total to $392,000,694, the only Scorsese film thus far to get over the $300,000,000 threshold.
