The penultimate episode of Masters of the Universe, Part 2 paid homage to the movie Clueless — specifically, Alicia Silverstone’s character, Cher Horowitz. While Silverstone has enjoyed a long and successful career on stage, screen, and behind the scenes, she is still probably most famous for her star-making performance in Clueless. This prompted the knowing nod to the classic comedy, as an in-joke for those animation fans who were aware that Silverstone voiced Queen Marlena as part of the cast of Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2 found Eternia in turmoil, following the resurrection of Skeletor and his seizing the Power of Grayskull, slaying the Sorceress and giving her power to his follower, Evil-Lyn. Yet, there was also turmoil within the royal family of Eternos, as King Randor and Queen Marlena had grown estranged following the revelation that their son, Prince Adam, was secretly the champion of Castle Grayskull, He-Man, and that he had died saving the world. While the King and Queen still worked together to protect their people, assembling an army to fight Skeletor at Point Dread, their marriage had grown strained. This was due to Marlena figuring out Adam’s secret identity on her own and keeping his secret, making Randor angry at being deceived by his family.
Adam’s resurrection and return in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2, did help to get his parents talking again, but there was little time for them to think of their relationship troubles after Evil-Lyn turned on Skeletor, claiming the Power of Grayskull for herself, becoming both Sorceress and Champion of Grayskull. As their forces prepared to lay siege to Castle Grayskull, King Randor approached Queen Marlena to say what he feared he might not get the chance to say if the battle went badly. “Eternia may have seen her last sunrise,” Randor noted grimly. The Queen defiantly replied with the classic line from Clueless, “As if.”
The phrase “as if,” used as a sarcastic utterance of disbelief, was popularized as a piece of slang among 1990s’ teenagers following the release of Clueless in 1995. However, the origins of the term lie within the LGBTQ community of Los Angeles, where Clueless writer and director Amy Heckerling first heard the phrase and thought it sounded like the kind of thing a fashionable teenager like Cher Horowitz would introduce into her vocabulary. However, the phrase was used by snarky teenagers even before the release of Clueless, being a frequent utterance by metalheads Wayne and Garth in the Saturday Night Live skits that inspired the 1992 classic comedy Wayne’s World.
This sort of referential humor has been a frequent occurrence in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2. This is not surprising, given that showrunner Kevin Smith is famed for sneaking nods to his earlier films or other works starring the actors he’s worked with into his productions. This has led to a number of entertaining Easter eggs beyond the reference to Alicia Silverstone’s famous catch-phrase from Clueless.
