There is no doubt that pop culture loves cute infantile things on-screen. You know what makes it better? If that cute thing had a parental figure, essentially making them a fantasy parent-baby power couple. That works every time. That right there is the winning formula and surprisingly, not many movies and TV shows have utilized that; we’re currently stuck with whatever Disney gave us: Rocket and Baby Groot or the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda.
Of course, having just those two choices makes it harder. Some of the new fans for The Mandalorian claim that Baby Yoda has dethroned Baby Groot while Guardians of the Galaxy purists beg to differ. So, we’re here to settle the debate once and for all… or maybe that’s a job for you, we’re just here to lay out why each duo might be better than the other so you can decide.
10 WHY ROCKET AND BABY GROOT: THEY UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER BETTER
Baby Yoda might have been 50 years old, but it seems he hasn’t spoken his first word yet, making communication between him (or is it her?) and Daddy Mando quite a pain. At least Baby Groot immediately picked up his first and only word: “I am Groot.”
Well, it’s not much, but based on his tone and way of saying “I am Groot,” you can guess what he’s feeling or what he wants to convey. With these three words, Baby Groot and Rocket can better communicate with each other, making Baby Groot more useful in life-and-death situations since you can instruct him to do things like bombing a planet, for example.
9 WHY MANDALORIAN AND BABY YODA: THEY WERE ONCE ENEMIES, SUPPOSEDLY
What does make Mando and Baby Yoda’s duo dynamics more endearing is the fact that the latter’s species is the sworn enemy of Mandalorians. Jedi and Mandalorians were eternal enemies, and since Baby Yoda is an inherent force-user, he already falls into the Jedi faction; it’s where he could eventually end up.
Even so, Mando set the hatred and faction differences aside and became an adoptive father to Baby Yoda. We don’t know about you, but taking your enemy’s orphaned baby and becoming its parent is simply an unmatched emotional cascade that Rocket and Baby Groot might find hard to top.
8 WHY ROCKET AND BABY GROOT: BETTER TASTE IN MUSIC
Being set in a more liberal and humorous fictional world, Guardians of the Galaxy sure does take a lot of liberties with its soundtrack and cultural references. In that regard, we often see Baby Groot dancing and jamming to some of the greatest hits of the 1970s and 1980s.
In fact, during the opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.II alone, we see Baby Groot dancing to Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra. You can’t deny the little dude’s excellent taste in music– he even borrowed a cassette player from Peter Quill to play the song in the middle of a fight.
7 WHY MANDALORIAN AND BABY YODA: THEY’RE MORE POWERFUL
Baby Yoda is still essentially an infant (as if that’s not obvious enough already) but even so, he has proven time and again what he’s capable of without any training or guidance whatsoever. From using telekinesis on a huge beast to healing a lethal poisonous bite, Baby Yoda’s powers and potential is quite limitless.
Mando is no slouch either, he can fly, is impervious to small arms projectiles due to his Beskar armor, and can easily fight an army. It’s a close match between him and Rocket who’s equally capable but we daresay Baby Groot has nothing on Baby Yoda when it comes to potential; a few more years and Baby Yoda will be able to take over galaxies if given a lightsaber.
6 WHY ROCKET AND BABY GROOT: THEY’RE AVENGERS!
Being an Avenger is a badge of honor for any fictional character, superhero or otherwise. At least, that’s how it is currently. As a superhero or superpowered character, you’re not cool if you’re not an Avenger, right DCEU? Anyway, Rocket and Baby Groot (or at least what used to be Baby Groot) briefly became Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Rocket and Groot were even quite instrumental in aiding the Avengers against Thanos. Do take note that Groot’s arm is basically still attached to Thor’s ax. In any case, this duo saved the universe even at a monumental disadvantage (they did have plenty of help though); that same feat could be a little too much for daddy Mando and Baby Yoda alone.
5 WHY MANDALORIAN AND BABY YODA: THEY HAVE MORE SCREEN TIME
One of the more obvious reasons why Mando and Baby Yoda have become arguably more memorable is the fact that they have a whole show dedicated to them. Baby Groot is awesome and all, but many of the other characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. II kept trying to steal his spotlight.
Every episode in The Mandalorian involves some cute interaction between Mando and Baby Yoda. There’s simply more of them to see and appreciate in the Disney show. In fact, we’re all probably spoiled by frequent appearances of Baby Yoda.
4 WHY ROCKET AND BABY GROOT: BABY GROOT IS FUNCTIONALLY IMMORTAL(?)
Okay here’s the thing, Baby Groot isn’t exactly Groot since the original Groot died in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Baby Groot is just Groot’s regenerated offspring (or something) but really, who can tell the difference? And why would you want to tell the difference? Even the name is the same; so, let’s set aside the alien technicality and assume that Baby Groot is still Groot.
After all, he seems to have all of Groot’s memories intact. What this means is that Groot is immortal and would just rebirth again like a phoenix should he die. Hence, you have an immortal and cute plant friend who has great taste in music and is also an Avenger.
3 WHY MANDALORIAN AND BABY YODA: THEY’VE GONE THROUGH WORSE
Rocket and Baby Groot might have suffered some devastating defeats and cosmic threats, but seeing as they’re surrounded by the Earth’s mightiest and their own superhero gang, the danger is not at all that threatening anymore.
By comparison, Mando and Baby Yoda were against the galaxy throughout most of the show. Both of them are fugitives and have been thrust into hopeless situations many times over. Plus, their enemies (Imperials) are just more menacing than the faceless aliens and comical evil gods of the MCU.
2 WHY ROCKET AND BABY GROOT: BABY GROOT ISN’T DELICATE
Despite Baby Yoda’s limitless potential for Force powers, he’s in no condition to take a beating compared to an older Jedi Grandmaster from the same species. He’s still growing and despite the wrinkles, appears to be only a little less delicate than a human infant.
There’s no doubt he gets hurt from the light beatings he received from Storm Troopers. Baby Groot, on the other hand, is low-maintenance and can be left alone most of the time. He can easily regenerate any limb and doesn’t seem to get hurt. He’s as cute as a baby and as tough as a oak, that’s any parent’s dream child if anything.
1 WHY MANDALORIAN AND BABY YODA: WE GET TO SEE MORE OF THEM!
Sadly, we only got to see Baby Groot and a blundering daddy Rocket in one film. Lucky us, Disney didn’t make the same mistake when it comes to Baby Yoda. Season 2 of The Mandalorian is fast on the way and will certainly feature more of daddy Mando and Baby Yoda.
So, that basically guarantees more wins for the Mando and Baby Yoda team since they get to appear a lot more in the future compared to Rocket and Baby Groot. We get to see more of their fantasy parental shenanigans unfold and develop in The Mandalorian this year.
