Rather than breaking out the holly and mistletoe, Minecraft will be hosting a different kind holiday event this year: one that will raise money and awareness for the World Wildlife Fund to help save the bees. The event will also celebrate the introduction of bee mobs to the game.

New content is constantly being added to the now decade-old Minecraft, and now bees will be one of the most recent additions. They’re a neutral mob, meaning they won’t attack the player unless provoked, in which case they will swarm the player and inflict poison. Bees are found in bee nests or beehives, and the player can obtain them by mining a bee nest with a tool enchanted with the Silk Touch perk. Players can house the bees in craftable beehives, breed them, and of course harvest them for honey.

Minecraft announced on their website that the upcoming holiday update, Buzzy Bees, will include educational live streams. The streams will involve various hosts and some of the game’s developers, and will run on December 6, 7, and 8 in the United States, Brazil, and Australia respectively. The full streaming schedule is available on the event announcement page. In addition, the Buzzy Bees event will include a community challenge running from December 13 to 15, the details of which will be released soon via Minecraft’s Twitter account and website. To top it all off, the bee mobs will officially be added to the game via an update on December 11.

Players and fans can directly help the cause in three ways: by donating money during the live streams, purchasing adorable shirts and other Minecraft bee merch on teemill.com starting December 6, and purchasing the Character Creator Bumblebee costume in the Minecraft Marketplace. Mojang will be giving exactly 62.5% of the proceeds directly to the WWF, and has pledged to donate $100,000 to kick off the festivities. As the name suggests, the World Wildlife Fund is an organization that advocates for wildlife preservation, as well as the reduction of human impact on the environment. It is also the world’s largest conservation organization with more than five million supporters.

Minecraft has always been about building a better world together, so this event is a perfect way to ring in the holidays while also celebrating the best of what it represents. Minecraft’s reach has always been impressive as one of the most popular in the world, so it’s nice to see that Mojang is using that platform to do some good.
