Oko, Thief of Crowns might just be the most powerful Planeswalker ever printed in Magic: The Gathering.
Planeswalkers are usually pretty powerful cards. The War of the Spark set brought Planeswalker power levels down to the uncommon rarity so their power has been somewhat diminished in recent years, but it looks like Wizards of the Coast are looking to ramp their semi-godlike power back up again with the latest release of Throne of Eldraine.
One particular Planeswalker has professional Magic players buzzing, and his name is Oko, Thief of Crowns.
Without even looking for anyone else’s opinion, Magic players can tell that Oko is a big deal. He casts just three mana to cast and arrives on the battlefield with 4 loyalty counters. This already makes him extremely likely to survive, but his first ability will add 2 more loyalty counters and place a Food Token on the battlefield. This means Oko will typically arrive with 6 loyalty counters, making him incredibly hard to get rid of.
His next ability adds a single loyalty counter in exchange for turning any artifact or creature into a 3/3 green Elk that loses all of its abilities. This isn’t until end of turn–the change is permanent. This allows Oko to either turn his food into a 3/3 beatstick or to eliminate a problematic enemy creature or artifact.
His final ability subtracts 5 loyalty tokens to exchange an artifact or creature the player controls with a creature the opponent controls of power 3 or less. This might not seem like the strongest ability in Oko’s arsenal, but keep in mind it’s one that can be used on the turn after he enters play if the player uses his first ability to create a food token.
Oko is already a monster thanks to the amazing synergy between his three abilities even without considering any other card in the deck. Combined with a deck that caters to his food-creation abilities, and Oko could be utterly broken.
And players seem to think that too. Soon after Field of the Dead was banned in Standard, Oko’s price skyrocketed on the major Magic trading sites. On MTGoldfish, Oko is currently priced at almost $57 in paper form, but over $93 online.
We’ll see how bonkers Oko can be at the next major Magic tournament, Mythic Championship VI, later in November.
