Ever since Pokémon Contests were introduced to the Pokémon anime in Ruby & Sapphire, more depth was added to the journeys of Ash and friends beyond everybody just following and watching Ash’s Gym challenges. Diamond & Pearl was the same, with Dawn’s Contest run feeling like an important part of the Sinnoh adventures.

Over the course of the Diamond & Pearl series, Dawn owned eight Pokémon, with them all taking part in Contests at some point, to varying levels and degrees of success. Regardless of their individual performances, however, Dawn went from a novice upon her introduction to becoming a very capable trainer and one of the top Coordinators in the series.

8 Buizel Was Destined For Battling Rather Than Taking Part In Pokémon Contests

Despite gradually becoming a close friend to Dawn ever since the moment that she caught it, Buizel was never truly compatible with Dawn and the path that she had chosen. As was revealed in a later episode, Buizel’s affinity was with Pokémon battles rather than Contests, with it constantly watching Ash’s training sessions in awe and admiration.

Even while with Dawn, it looked for strong opponents to challenge, with Elite Four member Lucien and his Bronzong being a major example of this. Buizel initially went off on its own and didn’t obey Dawn, but they eventually grew to respect and understand one another before Dawn traded Buizel to Ash for his Contest-loving Aipom.

7 Ambipom May Well Have Helped Dawn To Greatness If It Had Stayed

When Dawn received Aipom in a trade with Ash, she was ecstatic, as she knew how capable Aipom could be in Contests. Relatively early into its stint with Dawn, it evolved into Ambipom, mainly thanks to Ash raising it really well previously.

Although Dawn preferred to pursue Contests, she did still find herself in some tough Battles against experienced opponents. One such example was her match against Veilstone Gym Leader Maylene, with Ambipom showcasing its strength by knocking out her Meditite before falling to Maylene’s Lucario. In Contests, Ambipom generally excelled, defeating Lila’s Delcatty and winning the Celestic Town Contest before only narrowly losing to Kenny’s Prinplup at the Sandalstraw Contest. Shortly after the latter, Dawn released Ambipom so that it could pursue its love for Pokémon Ping Pong.

6 Togekiss Was A Terrific Final Addition To Dawn’s Team

Togekiss was the eighth and final Pokémon that Dawn received over the course of her Sinnoh journeys with Ash and Brock, given to her as a gift from Princess Salvia. Known as something of a behemoth in the Gen IV games, with Champion Cynthia owning one in several of the games including during the rematches in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, Togekiss wasn’t given a whole lot of time to shine alongside Dawn in the anime.

However, it was still seen showcasing impressive moves from Aura Sphere to Air Slash and Safeguard to Sky Attack. It may have narrowly lost the final Contest Battle against Zoey, but it put on a great performance alongside Piplup and did still have its Arrowroot Contest victory to hold onto.

5 Buneary Carried Dawn Through Many Appeals Rounds

As the first wild Pokémon that Dawn added to her team alongside her Piplup, Buneary became a staple in Dawn’s Pokémon Contest line-ups. Its cuteness and generally adorable nature allowed it to shine in the Appeals and Performance rounds of Contests, but its battling capabilities were ultimately lacking in comparison.

However, it was still capable in battle with its relatively diverse move-pool, including Bounce, Ice Beam, and Dizzy Punch, and was able to hold its own against Team Rocket and occasionally in Contest Battle Rounds.

4 Pachirisu Was More Than Capable In Both Appeals And Battle Rounds

Despite initially proving to be one of Dawn’s toughest Pokémon to raise in terms of its hyperactive and unpredictable nature, Pachirisu grew up to become one of Dawn’s better battlers with its powerful Electric-type moves.

It helped her to defeat Ursula’s Gabite to win the Chocovine Contest and was also used in many other Contests due to its adorable nature coupled with its underestimated and sometimes volatile offense. Pachirisu had a fairly standard move-pool with Super Fang, Sweet Kiss, Spark, and Discharge, but they were all perfected and nurtured in a way that they could make Pachirisu look good in Pokémon Contests.

3 Quilava Was An Accomplished Battler From The Moment It Hatched

In the Diamond & Pearl series of the anime, Dawn followed in Ash’s footsteps in terms of raising a Cyndaquil and evolving it into a Quilava. Dawn received the Pokémon as an Egg and cared for it until it hatched. Almost immediately after it hatched, Cyndaquil had a training match with Ash’s Grotle and put in an impressive performance before Brock cautiously called off the bout.

Dawn’s Cyndaquil played its part in Dawn’s Contest run in the Sinnoh region, with it working especially well with Mamoswine and Buneary. As a Cyndaquil, it had a basic move-set with Swift, Smokescreen, and Flame Wheel, but upon evolving into Quilava, it learned Eruption and Flamethrower.

2 Mamoswine Took Some Time To Warm Up To Dawn But Was A Valued Member Of The Team Once It Respected Her

Ever since Dawn met the greedy Swinub back when it was frequenting the forest nearby to Mr. Backlot’s house and it agreed to join her team, she found it tough to keep it under control. As a Swinub, it would quickly go on rampages to find and steal food if it wasn’t contained or catered for, and this turned into bouts of disobedience when it evolved into Piloswine.

When it evolved again into Mamoswine, it took Dawn a lot of patience, time, and effort to calm Mamoswine down and ultimately gain its trust and respect. As soon as that happened, Mamoswine actively tried to pull its weight in Contests and eventually found its Contest partner in Cyndaquil, with the duo making a great team. Mamoswine showcased a wide range of moves and was easily one of Dawn’s better and stronger battlers.

1 Piplup Was Dawn’s Most Trusted Companion

Piplup was Dawn’s starter Pokémon and quickly cemented itself as her own equivalent of Ash’s Pikachu, with the two being close friends and almost inseparable. Despite the fact that Dawn never evolved Piplup, it became a fierce and competitive battler not to be underestimated and was certainly to thank for Dawn’s successful Pokémon Contest run.

Piplup helped Dawn to her first two Pokémon Contest Ribbons with Battle Round victories, and alongside Togekiss, only narrowly lost to Zoey at the Sinnoh Grand Festival final.
