There are all kinds of different Mega Evolutions, with different Pokémon picked out from across the various generations. One notable group of Mega Evolved Pokémon are the starters. Not all starters can Mega Evolve, something some fans aren’t exactly thrilled about. So far, only the Gen I and III starters have been given a Mega Evolution with Gen II being egregiously overlooked.

There are a total of seven starter Mega Evolutions in the games. Each Mega Evolution has its uses and some good to along with some bad. While they’re better than most of the Pokémon in the games, not all of them cut it once compared to one another. Here’s every starter Mega Evolution, ranked from worst to best.

7 Mega Sceptile

With every Pokémon you choose to train, you’re going to have to weigh the good and the bad when determining whether or not it’s worth putting time into. Mega Sceptile has some things going for it that make it an enticing option for any trainer looking for a Grass-type in their party. But at the same time, it has some pretty big downsides. In the end, the bad outweighs the good with Mega Sceptile.

Mega Sceptile is basically a better glass canon than its base form. It has incredibly high Speed and Special Attack (both base 145), making it a fantastic late-game cleaner. Of course, it Special Defense and Defense are fairly middling, though, while its HP is below average. If it can’t finish its opponent off, they’ll likely take it down in retaliation. In terms of weaknesses, it’s actually a step down from Sceptile. Sure, it gains an immunity to Electric-type moves (through its ability), but gains a weakness to troublesome Fairy-types alongside its five other type weaknesses.

6 Mega Blastoise

Sadly, Blastoise gets the short end of the stick when compared to his Gen I starter counterparts. It’s by no means a bad choice of Pokémon, but doesn’t have the same kind of base stat distribution some of the other Mega Evolutions possess that make them so good. Still, don’t underestimate it. Mega Blastoise can deal a ton of damage to an opponent.

Its main weaknesses are its subpar Speed and HP base stats, which actually don’t change at all from its regular form. But on the plus side, its Attack, Defense and Special stats get a pretty hefty boost. Mega Blastoise has great Special Attack with base 135, and a nice damage boost from its Mega Launcher ability. It has a number of moves in its learnset that can benefit from this as well.

5 Mega Charizard Y

In regards to Mega Evolutions, Chariard kind of got some special treatment by the developers. It’s one of only two Pokémon with the ability to Mega Evolve that received alternate Mega Evolutions. Much like Mewtwo, Charizard has an X & Y form.

Mega Charizard Y has a ton of Special Attack, and its Drought ability boosts the damage output of its Fire-type moves even further. A staple of sun teams, this Charizard Mega Evolution can punch huge holes in teams if given the opportunity.

4 Mega Venusaur

Mega Venusaur won’t exactly wow you with its stats. None of its base stats were boosted up ridiculously, but it’s a solid Pokémon to have on your team that doesn’t have that many glaring flaws. Everything aside from its HP and Speed stats (which remained at a solid 80) was boosted to at least 100 or more.

Mega Venusaur not only gained some pretty considerable stat boosts, but actually loses its weakness to Fire- and Ice-type moves as well (thanks to its ability). That’s huge for a Grass-type and will definitely give you the upper hand in some battles if used properly. It’s the epitome of a tanky Grass-type, a key component of lots of different types of teams.

3 Mega Swampert

Swampert is hands down the best Water-type starter introduced in the games so far. It’s a tough and versatile Pokémon that doesn’t really have any glaring faults. Mega Swampert improves on all of that, and makes Swampert an even more solid option for your party. The only downside with Swampert is its quadruple weakness to Grass-type moves.

If you can look over that one – and only – type weakness, you’ll be happy with what you get. Mega Swampert has amazing Attack, Defense and Special Defense stats, with some great Special Attack and HP as well. With its Swift Swim ability, you can even make it a super-frightening speedy sweeper on rain teams, which can dole out huge hits and take a few itself.

2 Mega Charizard X

Mega Charizard X lacks the ridiculous Special Attack of its counterpart, but it’s meant for a different role. With high Attack, the Tough Claws ability, additional Dragon typing, Dragon Dance AND darn powerful STAB moves in Flare Blitz and Outrage, its one of the most potent physical setup sweepers around.

Mega Charizard X’s base Speed is a very average 100, but if you give it a little breathing room to start boosting, you’re going to be in for a world of pain.

1 Mega Blaziken

Deciding on which Mega Evolution to fit in at number one on these rankings was tough, but in the end, Mega Blaziken really seemed like the best choice. At first glance, it may seem like a typical glass cannon, but it’s better than that. It offers you more value and versatility than Mega Sceptile would, say.

Mega Blaziken really stands out with its combination of high Speed, Attack and Special Attack. It has well-rounded HP and Defense stats as well, making it more durable than most other glass cannon types. Its Speed Boost ability can see it snowball out of the opponent’s control with a simple use of Protect. If you’re a player who enjoys the mind games of Aegislash and its will it King’s Shield or won’t it shenanigans, that’s something you’ll be able to appreciate.
