Pokémon GO Is Getting A Machop Community Day In January

Pokémon GO has announced that the next community Day will feature Machop. Community Days are special events in the popular mobile game that give players an increased chance at catching specific Pokémon. The most recent Community Day, which took place earlier this month, was one of the game’s biggest, giving players a crack at every monster that was previously featured in an event. It ran for two whole days to give as many people as possible a shot at taking part in the festivities.

Ever since its ground shaking release in 2016, Pokémon GO has thrived off of special events. The app never passes up an opportunity for celebration, and these regular Community Day events are just one avenue for festivities. Recently the app even commemorated the Game Awards by flooding itself with Woopers. The cute amphibians were spotted in droves in-game during the rewards show. As endearing as Wooper is, and as amusing as it was to see the “Wooper Watch” banners pop up periodically throughout the Game Awards show, many felt underwhelmed by this event. Wooper isn’t an especially rare or powerful Pokémon, and the opportunity to catch a lot of them wasn’t thrilling enough for a lot of fans.

Hopefully these underwhelmed players will get more enjoyment out of January’s Community Day. Pokémon GO Live has revealed that the next event will revolve around the scrappy little fighting Pokémon, Machop. Over the course of the event on January 16th, players will be more likely to encounter Machop in the wild, and have a chance to catch a shiny one as well. Anyone who evolves a Machoke during the event will receive a Machamp who is guaranteed to know Payback. Niantic is also implementing a special research story called “Straight to the Top, Machop!” which is available for purchase for $1 USD, but fans who buy into the Kanto Tour will get it for free.

As disappointing as the Game Awards event was, Pokémon GO must be doing something right. Last week it was revealed that the app was one of five mobile games to exceed $1 billion in profits this year. It’s surprising to see a game with such a heavy emphasis on going outside prosper during the lockdowns enforced by COVID-19. But whatever Pokémon GO is doing seems to be working wonders.

On the other hand, it might not be so surprising. Pokémon GO is one of the most famous mobile games of all time, and its launch in 2016 changed social dynamics around the world for a few months. The changes and bonuses the game is offering to fans during the COVID-19 pandemic have ensured that players can still enjoy the AR experience from the safety and comfort of their own homes. This upcoming Community Day event proves that Niantic has no intention of slowing down in 2021; this sure to be just the tip of the Pokémon GO iceberg.
