It doesn’t take long to get into the story of Pokémon Sword & Shield’s Isle of Armor expansion. As soon as you get off the train, you’ll be confronted by a new rival and be set on the path to the Master Dojo. Then you do three very easy “trials” and seemingly achieve mastery at the dojo. As a reward, you meet Kubfu. The adorable little karate bear is actually a Legendary Pokémon, and the dojo’s master tells you to train it up to be worthy of your next challenge.

The game gives you some clues as to how to best train up Kubfu, but we’re going to give you the easy method. Here are the fastest ways to get Kubfu ready for the Tower of Water or Tower of Darkness.

What Master Mustard Expects From Kubfu

When you’re given Kubfu, Mustard tells you to bond with it so that you can enter one of the towers. He’s not entirely clear on what that entails, but players should get the idea he wants them to up their friendship with Kubfu. Once that’s done, they’ll also need to get the little guy to level 70 so it can brave the battles ahead.

How To Raise Kubfu’s Friendship Level Quickly

You can get Kubfu in fighting shape in any order you choose, but friendship is the first thing Mustard asks for. There are two easy ways to do this. The first is playing with Kubfu in camp. Toss the ball a few times, give it the old feather toy to whack, and share some curry. After a few minutes of this, it will love you.

The other method involves traveling the Isle of Armor to see the sights. If you look at the mini-map, you’ll see exclamation points over three areas. One will be out in the fields, one in a cave, and another by the desert. Going to these and speaking with a dojo student there will trigger a cutscene where you and Kubfu take in the sights. After doing this twice, Kubfu should be your BFF. The game will even tell you to visit Mustard when that’s the case.

How To Level Kubfu To 70 Fast

With Kubfu as your buddy, it’s time for the main event. It should be around level 70 to take on the Towers of Water and Darkness. It starts at level 10. How do you make up those 60 levels? Stuff it full of candies. You should have a good stock of Exp. Candies if you do Max Raids frequently. If you don’t, you should be raiding! There’s a little event going on right now that will reward you greatly for raiding.

If you’d prefer to grind Kubfu to level 70, we have one word for you: Chansey. Chansey spawn somewhat frequently in the grassy plains of the Isle of Armor. They reward more Experience than the average Pokémon. Have Kubfu hold the new Exp. Charm you get from Honey’s son and let a level 70 or higher Pokémon do the fighting. Kubfu will rake in the Experience Points.
